Then Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel.1Then Moses continued to speak these words to all Israel,
He said to them, "Today I am a hundred and twenty years old. I am no longer able to get about, and the LORD has said to me, 'You will not cross the Jordan.'2saying, "I am now 120 years old; I can no longer act as your leader. The LORD has told me, 'You will not cross the Jordan.'
As for the LORD your God, he is about to cross over before you; he will destroy these nations before you and dispossess them. As for Joshua, he is about to cross before you just as the LORD has said.3The LORD your God is the one who will cross ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will drive them out. Joshua is the one who will cross ahead of you, as the LORD has said.
The LORD will do to them just what he did to Sihon and Og, the Amorite kings, and to their land, which he destroyed.4The LORD will deal with them as he did Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and their land when he destroyed them.
The LORD will deliver them over to you and you will do to them according to the whole commandment I have given you.5The LORD will deliver them over to you, and you must do to them exactly as I have commanded you.
Be strong and courageous! Do not fear or tremble before them, for the LORD your God is the one who is going with you. He will not fail you or abandon you!"6Be strong and courageous; don't be terrified or afraid of them. For the LORD your God is the one who will go with you; he will not leave you or abandon you."
Then Moses called out to Joshua in the presence of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you will accompany these people to the land that the LORD promised to give their ancestors, and you will enable them to inherit it.7Moses then summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people into the land the LORD swore to give to their fathers. You will enable them to take possession of it.
The LORD is indeed going before you--he will be with you; he will not fail you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged!" 8The LORD is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged."
Then Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carry the ark of the LORD's covenant, and to all Israel's elders.9Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the LORD's covenant, and to all the elders of Israel.
He commanded them: "At the end of seven years, at the appointed time of the cancellation of debts, at the Feast of Temporary Shelters,10Moses commanded them, "At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of debt cancellation, during the Festival of Shelters,
when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God in the place he chooses, you must read this law before them within their hearing.11when all Israel assembles in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he chooses, you are to read this law aloud before all Israel.
Gather the people--men, women, and children, as well as the resident foreigners in your villages--so they may hear and thus learn about and fear the LORD your God and carefully obey all the words of this law.12Gather the people--men, women, dependents, and the resident aliens within your city gates--so that they may listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and be careful to follow all the words of this law.
Then their children, who have not known this law, will also hear about and learn to fear the LORD your God for as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess." 13Then their children who do not know the law will listen and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess."
Then the LORD said to Moses, "The day of your death is near. Summon Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting so that I can commission him." So Moses and Joshua presented themselves in the tent of meeting.14The LORD said to Moses, "The time of your death is now approaching. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting so that I may commission him." When Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting,
The LORD appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud that stood above the door of the tent.15the LORD appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood at the entrance to the tent.
Then the LORD said to Moses, "You are about to die, and then these people will begin to prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land into which they are going. They will reject me and break my covenant that I have made with them.16The LORD said to Moses, "You are about to rest with your fathers, and these people will soon prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will abandon me and break the covenant I have made with them.
At that time my anger will erupt against them and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome them so that they will say at that time, 'Have not these disasters overcome us because our God is not among us?'17My anger will burn against them on that day; I will abandon them and hide my face from them so that they will become easy prey. Many troubles and afflictions will come to them. On that day they will say, 'Haven't these troubles come to us because our God is no longer with us?'
But I will certainly hide myself at that time because of all the wickedness they will have done by turning to other gods.18I will certainly hide my face on that day because of all the evil they have done by turning to other gods.
Now write down for yourselves the following song and teach it to the Israelites. Put it into their very mouths so that this song may serve as my witness against the Israelites!19Therefore write down this song for yourselves and teach it to the Israelites; have them sing it, so that this song may be a witness for me against the Israelites.
For after I have brought them to the land I promised to their ancestors--one flowing with milk and honey--and they eat their fill and become fat, then they will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant.20When I bring them into the land I swore to give their fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey, they will eat their fill and prosper. They will turn to other gods and worship them, despising me and breaking my covenant.
Then when many disasters and distresses overcome them this song will testify against them, for their descendants will not forget it. I know the intentions they have in mind today, even before I bring them to the land I have promised."21And when many troubles and afflictions come to them, this song will testify against them, because their descendants will not have forgotten it. For I know what they are prone to do, even before I bring them into the land I swore to give them."
So on that day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites,22So Moses wrote down this song on that day and taught it to the Israelites.
and the LORD commissioned Joshua son of Nun, "Be strong and courageous, for you will take the Israelites to the land I have promised them, and I will be with you." 23The LORD commissioned Joshua son of Nun, "Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I swore to them, and I will be with you."
When Moses finished writing on a scroll the words of this law in their entirety,24When Moses had finished writing down on a scroll every single word of this law,
he commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the LORD's covenant,25he commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the LORD's covenant,
"Take this scroll of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God. It will remain there as a witness against you,26"Take this book of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God so that it may remain there as a witness against you.
for I know about your rebellion and stubbornness. Indeed, even while I have been living among you to this very day, you have rebelled against the LORD; you will be even more rebellious after my death!27For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are rebelling against the LORD now, while I am still alive, how much more will you rebel after I am dead!
Gather to me all your tribal elders and officials so I can speak to them directly about these things and call the heavens and the earth to witness against them.28Assemble all your tribal elders and officers before me so that I may speak these words directly to them and call heaven and earth as witnesses against them.
For I know that after I die you will totally corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in the days to come because you will act wickedly before the LORD, inciting him to anger because of your actions."29For I know that after my death you will become completely corrupt and turn from the path I have commanded you. Disaster will come to you in the future, because you will do what is evil in the LORD's sight, angering him with what your hands have made."
Then Moses recited the words of this song from start to finish in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel. 30Then Moses recited aloud every single word of this song to the entire assembly of Israel:
