The LORD God of Israel who rules over all spoke about Moab. "Sure to be judged is Nebo! Indeed, it will be destroyed! Kiriathaim will suffer disgrace. It will be captured! Its fortress will suffer disgrace. It will be torn down! 1About Moab, this is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Woe to Nebo, because it is about to be destroyed; Kiriathaim will be put to shame; it will be taken captive. The fortress will be put to shame and dismayed!
People will not praise Moab any more. The enemy will capture Heshbon and plot how to destroy Moab, saying, 'Come, let's put an end to that nation!' City of Madmen, you will also be destroyed. A destructive army will march against you. 2There is no longer praise for Moab; they plan harm against her in Heshbon: Come, let's cut her off from nationhood. Also, Madmen, you will be silenced; the sword will follow you.
Cries of anguish will arise in Horonaim, 'Oh, the ruin and great destruction!' 3A voice cries out from Horonaim, "devastation and a crushing blow!"
"Moab will be crushed. Her children will cry out in distress. 4Moab will be shattered; her little ones will cry out.
Indeed they will climb the slopes of Luhith, weeping continually as they go. For on the road down to Horonaim they will hear the cries of distress over the destruction. 5For on the Ascent to Luhith they will be weeping continually, and on the descent to Horonaim will be heard cries of distress over the destruction:
They will hear, 'Run! Save yourselves! Even if you must be like a lonely shrub in the desert!' 6Flee! Save your lives! Be like a juniper bush in the wilderness.
"Moab, you trust in the things you do and in your riches. So you too will be conquered. Your god Chemosh will go into exile along with his priests and his officials. 7Because you trust in your works and treasures, you will be captured also. Chemosh will go into exile with his priests and officials.
The destroyer will come against every town. Not one town will escape. The towns in the valley will be destroyed. The cities on the high plain will be laid waste. I, the LORD, have spoken! 8The destroyer will move against every town; not one town will escape. The valley will perish, and the plain will be annihilated, as the LORD has said.
Set up a gravestone for Moab, for it will certainly be laid in ruins! Its cities will be laid waste and become uninhabited." 9Make Moab a salt marsh, for she will run away; her towns will become a desolation, without inhabitant.
A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the LORD's work! A curse on anyone who keeps from carrying out his destruction! 10The one who does the LORD's business deceitfully is cursed, and the one who withholds his sword from bloodshed is cursed.
"From its earliest days Moab has lived undisturbed. It has never been taken into exile. Its people are like wine allowed to settle undisturbed on its dregs, never poured out from one jar to another. They are like wine which tastes like it always did, whose aroma has remained unchanged. 11Moab has been left quiet since his youth, settled like wine on its dregs. He hasn't been poured from one container to another or gone into exile. So his taste has remained the same, and his aroma hasn't changed.
But the time is coming when I will send men against Moab who will empty it out. They will empty the towns of their people, then will lay those towns in ruins. I, the LORD, affirm it! 12Therefore look, the days are coming--this is the LORD's declaration--when I will send pourers to him, who will pour him out. They will empty his containers and smash his jars.
The people of Moab will be disappointed by their god Chemosh. They will be as disappointed as the people of Israel were when they put their trust in the calf god at Bethel. 13Moab will be put to shame because of Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was put to shame because of Bethel that they trusted in.
How can you men of Moab say, 'We are heroes, men who are mighty in battle?' 14How can you say, "We are warriors--valiant men for battle"?
Moab will be destroyed. Its towns will be invaded. Its finest young men will be slaughtered. I, the King, the LORD who rules over all, affirm it! 15The destroyer of Moab and its towns has come up, and the best of its young men have gone down to slaughter. This is the King's declaration; the LORD of Armies is his name.
Moab's destruction is at hand. Disaster will come on it quickly. 16Moab's calamity is near at hand; his disaster is rushing swiftly.
Mourn for that nation, all you nations living around it, all of you nations that know of its fame. Mourn and say, 'Alas, its powerful influence has been broken! Its glory and power have been done away!' 17Mourn for him, all you surrounding nations, everyone who knows his name. Say, "How the mighty scepter is shattered, the glorious staff!"
Come down from your place of honor; sit on the dry ground, you who live in Dibon. For the one who will destroy Moab will attack you; he will destroy your fortifications. 18Come down from glory; sit on parched ground, resident of the daughter of Dibon, for the destroyer of Moab has come against you; he has destroyed your fortresses.
You who live in Aroer, stand by the road and watch. Question the man who is fleeing and the woman who is escaping. Ask them, 'What has happened?' 19Stand by the highway and watch, resident of Aroer! Ask him who is fleeing or her who is escaping, "What happened?"
They will answer, 'Moab is disgraced, for it has fallen! Wail and cry out in mourning! Announce along the Arnon River that Moab has been destroyed.' 20Moab is put to shame, indeed dismayed. Wail and cry out! Declare by the Arnon that Moab is destroyed.
"Judgment will come on the cities on the high plain: on Holon, Jahzah, and Mephaath,21"Judgment has come to the land of the plateau--to Holon, Jahzah, Mephaath,
on Dibon, Nebo, and Beth Diblathaim,22Dibon, Nebo, Beth-diblathaim,
on Kiriathaim, Beth Gamul, and Beth Meon,23Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul, Beth-meon,
on Kerioth and Bozrah. It will come on all the towns of Moab, both far and near.24Kerioth, Bozrah, and all the towns of the land of Moab, those far and near.
Moab's might will be crushed. Its power will be broken. I, the LORD, affirm it! 25Moab's horn is chopped off; his arm is shattered." This is the LORD's declaration.
"Moab has vaunted itself against me. So make him drunk with the wine of my wrath until he splashes around in his own vomit, until others treat him as a laughingstock. 26"Make him drunk, because he has exalted himself against the LORD. Moab will wallow in his own vomit, and he will also become a laughingstock.
For did not you people of Moab laugh at the people of Israel? Did you think that they were nothing but thieves, that you shook your head in contempt every time you talked about them? 27Wasn't Israel a laughingstock to you? Was he ever found among thieves? For whenever you speak of him you shake your head."
Leave your towns, you inhabitants of Moab. Go and live in the cliffs. Be like a dove that makes its nest high on the sides of a ravine. 28Abandon the towns! Live in the cliffs, residents of Moab! Be like a dove that nests inside the mouth of a cave.
I have heard how proud the people of Moab are, I know how haughty they are. I have heard how arrogant, proud, and haughty they are, what a high opinion they have of themselves. 29We have heard of Moab's pride, great pride, indeed--his insolence, arrogance, pride, and haughty heart.
I, the LORD, affirm that I know how arrogant they are. But their pride is ill-founded. Their boastings will prove to be false. 30I know his outburst. This is the LORD's declaration. It is empty. His boast is empty.
So I will weep with sorrow for Moab. I will cry out in sadness for all of Moab. I will moan for the people of Kir Heres. 31Therefore, I will wail over Moab. I will cry out for Moab, all of it; he will moan for the men of Kir-heres.
I will weep for the grapevines of Sibmah just like the town of Jazer weeps over them. Their branches once spread as far as the Dead Sea. They reached as far as the town of Jazer. The destroyer will ravage her fig, date, and grape crops. 32I will weep for you, vine of Sibmah, with more than the weeping for Jazer. Your tendrils have extended to the sea; they have reached to the sea and to Jazer. The destroyer has fallen on your summer fruit and grape harvest.
Joy and gladness will disappear from the fruitful land of Moab. I will stop the flow of wine from the winepresses. No one will stomp on the grapes there and shout for joy. The shouts there will be shouts of soldiers, not the shouts of those making wine. 33Gladness and celebration are taken from the fertile field and from the land of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the winepresses; no one will tread with shouts of joy. The shouting is not a shout of joy.
Cries of anguish raised from Heshbon and Elealeh will be sounded as far as Jahaz. They will be sounded from Zoar as far as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah. For even the waters of Nimrim will be dried up. 34"There is a cry from Heshbon to Elealeh; they make their voices heard as far as Jahaz--from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah--because even the Waters of Nimrim have become desolate.
I will put an end in Moab to those who make offerings at her places of worship. I will put an end to those who sacrifice to other gods. I, the LORD, affirm it! 35In Moab, I will stop"--this is the LORD's declaration--"the one who offers sacrifices on the high place and burns incense to his gods.
So my heart moans for Moab like a flute playing a funeral song. Yes, like a flute playing a funeral song, my heart moans for the people of Kir Heres. For the wealth they have gained will perish. 36Therefore, my heart moans like flutes for Moab, and my heart moans like flutes for the people of Kir-heres. And therefore, the wealth he has gained has perished.
For all of them will shave their heads in mourning. They will all cut off their beards to show their sorrow. They will all make gashes in their hands. They will all put on sackcloth. 37Indeed, every head is bald and every beard is chopped short. On every hand is a gash and sackcloth around the waist.
On all the housetops in Moab and in all its public squares there will be nothing but mourning. For I will break Moab like an unwanted jar. I, the LORD, affirm it! 38On all the rooftops of Moab and in her public squares, everyone is mourning because I have shattered Moab like a jar no one wants." This is the LORD's declaration.
Oh, how shattered Moab will be! Oh, how her people will wail! Oh, how she will turn away in shame! Moab will become an object of ridicule, a terrifying sight to all the nations that surround her." 39"How broken it is! They wail! How Moab has turned his back! He is ashamed. Moab will become a laughingstock and a shock to all those around him."
For the LORD says, "Look! Like an eagle with outspread wings a nation will swoop down on Moab. 40For this is what the LORD says: Look! He will swoop down like an eagle and spread his wings against Moab.
Her towns will be captured. Her fortresses will be taken. At that time the soldiers of Moab will be frightened like a woman in labor. 41The towns have been captured, and the strongholds seized. In that day the heart of Moab's warriors will be like the heart of a woman with contractions.
Moab will be destroyed and no longer be a nation, because she has vaunted herself against the LORD. 42Moab will be destroyed as a people because he has exalted himself against the LORD.
Terror, pits, and traps are in store for the people who live in Moab. I, the LORD, affirm it! 43Panic, pit, and trap await you, resident of Moab. This is the LORD's declaration.
Anyone who flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit. Anyone who climbs out of the pit will be caught in a trap. For the time is coming when I will punish the people of Moab. I, the LORD, affirm it! 44He who flees from the panic will fall in the pit, and he who climbs from the pit will be captured in the trap, for I will bring against Moab the year of their punishment. This is the LORD's declaration.
In the shadows of the walls of Heshbon those trying to escape will stand helpless. For a fire will burst forth from Heshbon. Flames will shoot out from the former territory of Sihon. They will burn the foreheads of the people of Moab, the skulls of those war-loving people. 45Those who flee will stand exhausted in Heshbon's shadow because fire has come out from Heshbon and a flame from within Sihon. It will devour Moab's forehead and the skull of the noisemakers.
Moab, you are doomed! You people who worship Chemosh will be destroyed. Your sons will be taken away captive. Your daughters will be carried away into exile. 46Woe to you, Moab! The people of Chemosh have perished because your sons have been taken captive and your daughters have gone into captivity.
Yet in days to come I will reverse Moab's ill fortune." says the LORD. The judgment against Moab ends here. 47Yet, I will restore the fortunes of Moab in the last days. This is the LORD's declaration. The judgment on Moab ends here.
