Proverbs 13

1A wise son accepts his father's discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. 1A wise son responds to his father's discipline, but a mocker doesn't listen to rebuke.
2From the fruit of his speech a person eats good things, but the faithless desire the fruit of violence. 2From the fruit of his mouth, a person will enjoy good things, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence.
3The one who guards his words guards his life, but whoever is talkative will come to ruin. 3The one who guards his mouth protects his life; the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin.
4The appetite of the sluggard craves but gets nothing, but the desire of the diligent will be abundantly satisfied. 4The slacker craves, yet has nothing, but the diligent is fully satisfied.
5The righteous person hates anything false, but the wicked person acts in shameful disgrace. 5The righteous hate lying, but the wicked bring disgust and shame.
6Righteousness guards the one who lives with integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner. 6Righteousness guards people of integrity, but wickedness undermines the sinner.
7There is one who pretends to be rich and yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor and yet possesses great wealth. 7One person pretends to be rich but has nothing; another pretends to be poor but has abundant wealth.
8The ransom of a person's life is his wealth, but the poor person hears no threat. 8Riches are a ransom for a person's life, but a poor person hears no threat.
9The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked goes out. 9The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is put out.
10With pride comes only contention, but wisdom is with the well-advised. 10Arrogance leads to nothing but strife, but wisdom is gained by those who take advice.
11Wealth gained quickly will dwindle away, but the one who gathers it little by little will become rich. 11Wealth obtained by fraud will dwindle, but whoever earns it through labor will multiply it.
12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is like a tree of life. 12Hope delayed makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
13The one who despises instruction will pay the penalty, but whoever esteems instruction will be rewarded. 13The one who has contempt for instruction will pay the penalty, but the one who respects a command will be rewarded.
14Instruction from the wise is like a life-giving fountain, to turn a person from deadly snares. 14A wise person's instruction is a fountain of life, turning people away from the snares of death.
15Keen insight wins favor, but the conduct of the unfaithful is harsh. 15Good sense wins favor, but the way of the treacherous never changes.
16Every shrewd person acts with knowledge, but a fool displays his folly. 16Every sensible person acts knowledgeably, but a fool displays his stupidity.
17An unreliable messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. 17A wicked envoy falls into trouble, but a trustworthy courier brings healing.
18The one who neglects discipline ends up in poverty and shame, but the one who accepts reproof is honored. 18Poverty and disgrace come to those who ignore discipline, but the one who accepts correction will be honored.
19A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools abhor turning away from evil. 19Desire fulfilled is sweet to the taste, but to turn from evil is detestable to fools.
20The one who associates with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. 20The one who walks with the wise will become wise, but a companion of fools will suffer harm.
21Calamity pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous. 21Disaster pursues sinners, but good rewards the righteous.
22A benevolent person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren, but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous. 22A good man leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, but the sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous.
23There is abundant food in the field of the poor, but it is swept away by injustice. 23The uncultivated field of the poor yields abundant food, but without justice, it is swept away.
24The one who spares his rod hates his child, but the one who loves his child is diligent in disciplining him. 24The one who will not use the rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently.
25The righteous has enough food to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked lacks food. 25A righteous person eats until he is satisfied, but the stomach of the wicked is empty.
