Proverbs 13

1A wise son accepts his father's discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. 1A wise son heeds a father's correction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke.
2From the fruit of his speech a person eats good things, but the faithless desire the fruit of violence. 2From the fruit of his words a man receives benefit, but the treacherous crave violence.
3The one who guards his words guards his life, but whoever is talkative will come to ruin. 3Anyone who guards his words protects his life; anyone who talks too much is ruined.
4The appetite of the sluggard craves but gets nothing, but the desire of the diligent will be abundantly satisfied. 4The lazy person craves, yet receives nothing, but the desires of the diligent are satisfied.
5The righteous person hates anything false, but the wicked person acts in shameful disgrace. 5A righteous person hates deceit, but the wicked person is shameful and disgraceful.
6Righteousness guards the one who lives with integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner. 6Righteousness protects the blameless, but wickedness brings down the sinner.
7There is one who pretends to be rich and yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor and yet possesses great wealth. 7One person pretends to be wealthy, but has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet is rich.
8The ransom of a person's life is his wealth, but the poor person hears no threat. 8The life of a wealthy man may be held for ransom, but whoever is poor receives no threats.
9The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked goes out. 9The light of the righteous shines, but the lamp of the wicked is extinguished.
10With pride comes only contention, but wisdom is with the well-advised. 10Arrogance only brings quarreling, but those receiving advice are wise.
11Wealth gained quickly will dwindle away, but the one who gathers it little by little will become rich. 11Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, but whoever works diligently increases his prosperity.
12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is like a tree of life. 12Delayed hope makes the heart ill, but fulfilled longing is a tree of life.
13The one who despises instruction will pay the penalty, but whoever esteems instruction will be rewarded. 13Anyone who despises a word of advice will pay for it, but whoever heeds a command will be rewarded.
14Instruction from the wise is like a life-giving fountain, to turn a person from deadly snares. 14What the wise have to teach is a fountain of life and causes someone to avoid the snares of death.
15Keen insight wins favor, but the conduct of the unfaithful is harsh. 15Good understanding produces grace, but the lifestyle of the treacherous never changes.
16Every shrewd person acts with knowledge, but a fool displays his folly. 16Every sensible person acts from knowledge, but a fool demonstrates folly.
17An unreliable messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. 17An evil messenger stumbles into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing.
18The one who neglects discipline ends up in poverty and shame, but the one who accepts reproof is honored. 18Poverty and shame are for those who ignore correction, but whoever listens to instruction gains honor.
19A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools abhor turning away from evil. 19Fulfilled longing is sweet to the soul, but avoiding evil is detestable to the fool.
20The one who associates with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. 20Whoever keeps company with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm.
21Calamity pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous. 21Disaster pursues the sinful, but good will reward the righteous.
22A benevolent person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren, but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous. 22A good person leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, but the wealth of the wicked is reserved for the righteous.
23There is abundant food in the field of the poor, but it is swept away by injustice. 23The field of the poor may produce much food, but it can be swept away through injustice.
24The one who spares his rod hates his child, but the one who loves his child is diligent in disciplining him. 24Whoever does not discipline his son hates him, but whoever loves him is diligent to correct him.
25The righteous has enough food to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked lacks food. 25A righteous person eats to his heart's content, but the stomach of the wicked remains hungry.
