NET BibleNew Living Translation
A wise son accepts his father's discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. 1A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline; a mocker refuses to listen to correction.
From the fruit of his speech a person eats good things, but the faithless desire the fruit of violence. 2Wise words will win you a good meal, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence.
The one who guards his words guards his life, but whoever is talkative will come to ruin. 3Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.
The appetite of the sluggard craves but gets nothing, but the desire of the diligent will be abundantly satisfied. 4Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.
The righteous person hates anything false, but the wicked person acts in shameful disgrace. 5The godly hate lies; the wicked cause shame and disgrace.
Righteousness guards the one who lives with integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner. 6Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin.
There is one who pretends to be rich and yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor and yet possesses great wealth. 7Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor.
The ransom of a person's life is his wealth, but the poor person hears no threat. 8The rich can pay a ransom for their lives, but the poor won’t even get threatened.
The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked goes out. 9The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.
With pride comes only contention, but wisdom is with the well-advised. 10Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.
Wealth gained quickly will dwindle away, but the one who gathers it little by little will become rich. 11Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is like a tree of life. 12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.
The one who despises instruction will pay the penalty, but whoever esteems instruction will be rewarded. 13People who despise advice are asking for trouble; those who respect a command will succeed.
Instruction from the wise is like a life-giving fountain, to turn a person from deadly snares. 14The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death.
Keen insight wins favor, but the conduct of the unfaithful is harsh. 15A person with good sense is respected; a treacherous person is headed for destruction.
Every shrewd person acts with knowledge, but a fool displays his folly. 16Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.
An unreliable messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. 17An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing.
The one who neglects discipline ends up in poverty and shame, but the one who accepts reproof is honored. 18If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored.
A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools abhor turning away from evil. 19It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them.
The one who associates with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. 20Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.
Calamity pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous. 21Trouble chases sinners, while blessings reward the righteous.
A benevolent person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren, but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous. 22Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.
There is abundant food in the field of the poor, but it is swept away by injustice. 23A poor person’s farm may produce much food, but injustice sweeps it all away.
The one who spares his rod hates his child, but the one who loves his child is diligent in disciplining him. 24Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.
The righteous has enough food to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked lacks food. 25The godly eat to their hearts’ content, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.
