A wise son accepts his father's discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. 1A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
From the fruit of his speech a person eats good things, but the faithless desire the fruit of violence. 2A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
The one who guards his words guards his life, but whoever is talkative will come to ruin. 3He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
The appetite of the sluggard craves but gets nothing, but the desire of the diligent will be abundantly satisfied. 4The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
The righteous person hates anything false, but the wicked person acts in shameful disgrace. 5A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.
Righteousness guards the one who lives with integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner. 6Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
There is one who pretends to be rich and yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor and yet possesses great wealth. 7There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
The ransom of a person's life is his wealth, but the poor person hears no threat. 8The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.
The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked goes out. 9The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
With pride comes only contention, but wisdom is with the well-advised. 10Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
Wealth gained quickly will dwindle away, but the one who gathers it little by little will become rich. 11Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is like a tree of life. 12Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.
The one who despises instruction will pay the penalty, but whoever esteems instruction will be rewarded. 13Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
Instruction from the wise is like a life-giving fountain, to turn a person from deadly snares. 14The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
Keen insight wins favor, but the conduct of the unfaithful is harsh. 15Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.
Every shrewd person acts with knowledge, but a fool displays his folly. 16Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.
An unreliable messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. 17A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.
The one who neglects discipline ends up in poverty and shame, but the one who accepts reproof is honored. 18Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools abhor turning away from evil. 19The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.
The one who associates with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. 20He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
Calamity pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous. 21Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.
A benevolent person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren, but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous. 22A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
There is abundant food in the field of the poor, but it is swept away by injustice. 23Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.
The one who spares his rod hates his child, but the one who loves his child is diligent in disciplining him. 24He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
The righteous has enough food to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked lacks food. 25The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.
