Psalm 18
NET BibleChristian Standard Bible
For the music director; by the LORD's servant David, who sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. He said: "I love you, LORD, my source of strength! 1I love you, LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge. 2The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 3I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was saved from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me, the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 4The ropes of death were wrapped around me; the torrents of destruction terrified me.
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me, the snares of death trapped me. 5The ropes of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried out to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 6I called to the LORD in my distress, and I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the roots of the mountains trembled; they heaved because he was angry. 7Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the mountains trembled; they shook because he burned with anger.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 8Smoke rose from his nostrils, and consuming fire came from his mouth; coals were set ablaze by it.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 9He bent the heavens and came down, total darkness beneath his feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 10He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 11He made darkness his hiding place, dark storm clouds his canopy around him.
From the brightness in front of him came hail and fiery coals. 12From the radiance of his presence, his clouds swept onward with hail and blazing coals.
The LORD thundered in the sky; the sovereign One shouted. 13The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High made his voice heard.
He shot his arrows and scattered them, many lightning bolts and routed them. 14He shot his arrows and scattered them; he hurled lightning bolts and routed them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by your battle cry, LORD, by the powerful breath from your nose. 15The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed, at your rebuke, LORD, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
He reached down from above and took hold of me; he pulled me from the surging water. 16He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he pulled me out of deep water.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 17He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 18They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 19He brought me out to a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 20The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; he repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands.
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 21For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not turned from my God to wickedness.
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 22Indeed, I let all his ordinances guide me and have not disregarded his statutes.
I was innocent before him, and kept myself from sinning. 23I was blameless toward him and kept myself from my iniquity.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 24So the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 25With the faithful you prove yourself faithful, with the blameless you prove yourself blameless,
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 26with the pure you prove yourself pure; but with the crooked you prove yourself shrewd.
For you deliver oppressed people, but you bring down those who have a proud look. 27For you rescue an oppressed people, but you humble those with haughty eyes.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. My God illuminates the darkness around me. 28LORD, you light my lamp; my God illuminates my darkness.
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 29With you I can attack a barricade, and with my God I can leap over a wall.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 30God--his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 31For who is God besides the LORD? And who is a rock? Only our God.
The one true God gives me strength; he removes the obstacles in my way. 32God--he clothes me with strength and makes my way perfect.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 33He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me securely on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 34He trains my hands for war; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You give me your protective shield; your right hand supports me; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 35You have given me the shield of your salvation; your right hand upholds me, and your humility exalts me.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 36You make a spacious place beneath me for my steps, and my ankles do not give way.
I chase my enemies and catch them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 37I pursue my enemies and overtake them; I do not turn back until they are wiped out.
I beat them to death; they fall at my feet. 38I crush them, and they cannot get up; they fall beneath my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 39You have clothed me with strength for battle; you subdue my adversaries beneath me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 40You have made my enemies retreat before me; I annihilate those who hate me.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 41They cry for help, but there is no one to save them--they cry to the LORD, but he does not answer them.
I grind them as fine windblown dust; I beat them underfoot like clay in the streets. 42I pulverize them like dust before the wind; I trample them like mud in the streets.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you make me a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 43You have freed me from the feuds among the people; you have appointed me the head of nations; a people I had not known serve me.
When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. Foreigners are powerless before me; 44Foreigners submit to me cringing; as soon as they hear they obey me.
foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 45Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their fortifications.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 46The LORD lives--blessed be my rock! The God of my salvation is exalted.
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 47God--he grants me vengeance and subdues peoples under me.
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 48He frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my adversaries; you rescue me from violent men.
So I will give you thanks before the nations, O LORD! I will sing praises to you! 49Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, LORD; I will sing praises about your name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and his descendants forever." 50He gives great victories to his king; he shows loyalty to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.
