For the music director; by the LORD's servant David, who sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. He said: "I love you, LORD, my source of strength! 1He said: "I love you, Lord, my strength.
The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge. 2The LORD is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my God, my stronghold in whom I take refuge, my shield, the glory of my salvation, and my high tower."
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 3I cried out to the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I was delivered from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me, the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 4The cords of death entangled me; the rivers of Belial made me afraid.
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me, the snares of death trapped me. 5The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried out to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 6In my distress I cried to the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From his Temple he heard my voice; my cry reached his ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the roots of the mountains trembled; they heaved because he was angry. 7The world shook and trembled; the foundations of the mountains quaked, they shook because he was angry.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 8In his anger smoke poured out of his nostrils, and consuming fire from his mouth; coals were lit from it.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 9He bent the sky and descended, and darkness was under his feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 10He rode upon a cherub and flew; he soared upon the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 11He made darkness his hiding place, his canopy surrounding him was dark waters and thick clouds.
From the brightness in front of him came hail and fiery coals. 12The brightness before him scattered the thick clouds, with hail stones and flashes of fire.
The LORD thundered in the sky; the sovereign One shouted. 13Then the LORD thundered in the heavens, and the Most High sounded aloud, calling for hail stones and flashes of fire.
He shot his arrows and scattered them, many lightning bolts and routed them. 14He shot his arrows and scattered them; with many lightning bolts he frightened them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by your battle cry, LORD, by the powerful breath from your nose. 15Then the channels of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were uncovered because of your rebuke, LORD, because of the blast from the breath of your nostrils.
He reached down from above and took hold of me; he pulled me from the surging water. 16He reached down and took me; he drew me from many waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 17He delivered me from my strong enemies, from those who hated me because they were stronger than I.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 18They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 19He brought me out to a spacious place; he delivered me, for in me he takes delight.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 20The LORD will reward me because I am righteous; because my hands are clean he will restore me;
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 21because I have kept the ways of the LORD, and I have not wickedly departed from my God;
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 22because all his judgments were always before me, and I did not cast off his statutes.
I was innocent before him, and kept myself from sinning. 23I was upright before him, and I kept myself from iniquity.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 24So the LORD restored me according to my righteousness, because my hands were clean in his sight.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 25To the holy, you show your gracious love, to the upright, you show yourself upright;
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 26to the pure, you show yourself pure, and to the morally corrupt, you appear to be perverse.
For you deliver oppressed people, but you bring down those who have a proud look. 27Indeed, you deliver the oppressed, but you bring down those who exalt themselves in their own eyes.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. My God illuminates the darkness around me. 28For you, LORD, make my lamp shine; my God enlightens my darkness.
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 29With your help I will run through an army, with help from my God I leap over walls.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 30As for God, his way is upright; the word of God is pure; he is a shield to all those who take refuge in him.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 31For who is God but the LORD, and who is a Rock other than our God?—
The one true God gives me strength; he removes the obstacles in my way. 32the God who clothes me with strength, and who makes my way upright;
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 33who makes my feet swift as the deer; who makes me stand on high places;
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 34who teaches my hands to make war, and my arms to bend a bronze bow.
You give me your protective shield; your right hand supports me; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 35You have given to me the shield of your deliverance, and your right hand holds me up; your gentleness made me great.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 36You make a broad place for my steps, so my feet won't slip.
I chase my enemies and catch them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 37I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn around until they were utterly defeated.
I beat them to death; they fall at my feet. 38I struck them down, so they are not able to rise up; they fell under my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 39You clothed me with strength for war; you will subdue under me those who rise up against me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 40You have made my enemies turn their back to me, and I will destroy those who hate me.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 41They cried out for deliverance, but there was no one to deliver; they cried out to the LORD, but he did not answer them.
I grind them as fine windblown dust; I beat them underfoot like clay in the streets. 42I ground them like wind-swept dust; I emptied them out like dirt in the street.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you make me a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 43You rescued me from conflict with the people; you made me head of the nations. People who did not know me will serve me.
When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. Foreigners are powerless before me; 44When they hear of me, they will obey me; foreigners will submit to me.
foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 45Foreigners will wilt away; they will come trembling out of their stronghold.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 46The LORD lives! Blessed be my Rock! May the God of my deliverance be exalted!
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 47He is the God who executes vengeance on my behalf; who destroys peoples under me;
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 48who delivers me from my enemies. Truly you will exalt me above those who oppose me; you will deliver me from the violent person.
So I will give you thanks before the nations, O LORD! I will sing praises to you! 49Therefore, I will give thanks to you among the nations, LORD; I will sing praises to your name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and his descendants forever." 50He is the one who gives victories to his king; who shows gracious love to his anointed, to David and his seed forever.
