For the music director; by the LORD's servant David, who sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. He said: "I love you, LORD, my source of strength! 1For the director of music. Of David the servant of the LORD. He sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: I love you, LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge. 2The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 3I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me, the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 4The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me, the snares of death trapped me. 5The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried out to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 6In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the roots of the mountains trembled; they heaved because he was angry. 7The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 8Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 9He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 10He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 11He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him-- the dark rain clouds of the sky.
From the brightness in front of him came hail and fiery coals. 12Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning.
The LORD thundered in the sky; the sovereign One shouted. 13The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.
He shot his arrows and scattered them, many lightning bolts and routed them. 14He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by your battle cry, LORD, by the powerful breath from your nose. 15The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at your rebuke, LORD, at the blast of breath from your nostrils.
He reached down from above and took hold of me; he pulled me from the surging water. 16He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 17He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 18They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 19He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 20The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 21For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I am not guilty of turning from my God.
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 22All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees.
I was innocent before him, and kept myself from sinning. 23I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 24The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 25To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 26to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
For you deliver oppressed people, but you bring down those who have a proud look. 27You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. My God illuminates the darkness around me. 28You, LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 29With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 30As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD's word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 31For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?
The one true God gives me strength; he removes the obstacles in my way. 32It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 33He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 34He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You give me your protective shield; your right hand supports me; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 35You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 36You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way.
I chase my enemies and catch them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 37I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
I beat them to death; they fall at my feet. 38I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 39You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 40You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 41They cried for help, but there was no one to save them-- to the LORD, but he did not answer.
I grind them as fine windblown dust; I beat them underfoot like clay in the streets. 42I beat them as fine as windblown dust; I trampled them like mud in the streets.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you make me a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 43You have delivered me from the attacks of the people; you have made me the head of nations. People I did not know now serve me,
When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. Foreigners are powerless before me; 44foreigners cower before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 45They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 46The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior!
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 47He is the God who avenges me, who subdues nations under me,
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 48who saves me from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me.
So I will give you thanks before the nations, O LORD! I will sing praises to you! 49Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and his descendants forever." 50He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing love to his anointed, to David and to his descendants forever.
