NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
For the music director; by the LORD's servant David, who sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. He said: "I love you, LORD, my source of strength! 1I love you, O LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge. 2The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 3I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me, the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 4The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me;
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me, the snares of death trapped me. 5the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried out to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 6In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the roots of the mountains trembled; they heaved because he was angry. 7Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 8Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 9He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 10He rode on a cherub and flew; he came swiftly on the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 11He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him, thick clouds dark with water.
From the brightness in front of him came hail and fiery coals. 12Out of the brightness before him hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.
The LORD thundered in the sky; the sovereign One shouted. 13The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice, hailstones and coals of fire.
He shot his arrows and scattered them, many lightning bolts and routed them. 14And he sent out his arrows and scattered them; he flashed forth lightnings and routed them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by your battle cry, LORD, by the powerful breath from your nose. 15Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
He reached down from above and took hold of me; he pulled me from the surging water. 16He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 17He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 18They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 19He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 20The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 21For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 22For all his rules were before me, and his statutes I did not put away from me.
I was innocent before him, and kept myself from sinning. 23I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my guilt.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 24So the LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 25With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 26with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
For you deliver oppressed people, but you bring down those who have a proud look. 27For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. My God illuminates the darkness around me. 28For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness.
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 29For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 30This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 31For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?—
The one true God gives me strength; he removes the obstacles in my way. 32the God who equipped me with strength and made my way blameless.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 33He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 34He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You give me your protective shield; your right hand supports me; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 35You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 36You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip.
I chase my enemies and catch them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 37I pursued my enemies and overtook them, and did not turn back till they were consumed.
I beat them to death; they fall at my feet. 38I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise; they fell under my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 39For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 40You made my enemies turn their backs to me, and those who hated me I destroyed.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 41They cried for help, but there was none to save; they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them.
I grind them as fine windblown dust; I beat them underfoot like clay in the streets. 42I beat them fine as dust before the wind; I cast them out like the mire of the streets.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you make me a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 43You delivered me from strife with the people; you made me the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me.
When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. Foreigners are powerless before me; 44As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me; foreigners came cringing to me.
foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 45Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 46The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation—
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 47the God who gave me vengeance and subdued peoples under me,
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 48who rescued me from my enemies; yes, you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from the man of violence.
So I will give you thanks before the nations, O LORD! I will sing praises to you! 49For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing to your name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and his descendants forever." 50Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.
