1These were the men who joined David in Ziklag, when he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish. (They were among the warriors who assisted him in battle.1The following were the men who came to David at Ziklag while he was still banned from the presence of Saul son of Kish. They were among the warriors who helped him in battle.
2They were armed with bows and could shoot arrows or sling stones right or left-handed. They were fellow tribesmen of Saul from Benjamin.) These were: 2They were archers who could use either the right or left hand, both to sling stones and shoot arrows from a bow. They were Saul's relatives from Benjamin:
3Ahiezer, the leader, and Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; Berachah, Jehu the Anathothite, 3Their chief was Ahiezer son of Shemaah the Gibeathite. Then there was his brother Joash; Jeziel and Pelet sons of Azmaveth; Beracah, Jehu the Anathothite;
4Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, one of the thirty warriors and their leader, Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite, 4Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a warrior among the Thirty and a leader over the Thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite;
5Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, Shephatiah the Haruphite, 5Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, Shephatiah the Haruphite;

8Some of the Gadites joined David at the stronghold in the desert. They were warriors who were trained for battle; they carried shields and spears. They were as fierce as lions and could run as quickly as gazelles across the hills.8Some Gadites defected to David at his stronghold in the desert. They were fighting men, trained for battle, expert with shield and spear. Their faces were like the faces of lions, and they were as swift as gazelles on the mountains.
9Ezer was the leader, Obadiah the second in command, Eliab the third,9Ezer was the chief, Obadiah second, Eliab third,
10Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,10Mishmannah fourth, Jeremiah fifth,
11Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,11Attai sixth, Eliel seventh,
12Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,12Johanan eighth, Elzabad ninth,
13Jeremiah the tenth, and Machbannai the eleventh.13Jeremiah tenth, and Machbannai eleventh.
14These Gadites were military leaders; the least led a hundred men, the greatest a thousand.14These Gadites were army commanders; the least of them was a match for a hundred, and the greatest of them for a thousand.
15They crossed the Jordan River in the first month, when it was overflowing its banks, and routed those living in all the valleys to the east and west. 15These are the men who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks, and put to flight all those in the valleys to the east and to the west.
16Some from Benjamin and Judah also came to David's stronghold.16Other Benjaminites and men from Judah also went to David at the stronghold.
17David went out to meet them and said, "If you come to me in peace and want to help me, then I will make an alliance with you. But if you come to betray me to my enemies when I have not harmed you, may the God of our ancestors take notice and judge!"17David went out to meet them and said to them, "If you have come in peace to help me, my heart will be united with you, but if you have come to betray me to my enemies even though my hands have done no wrong, may the God of our ancestors look on it and judge."
18But a spirit empowered Amasai, the leader of the thirty warriors, and he said: "We are yours, O David! We support you, O son of Jesse! May you greatly prosper! May those who help you prosper! Indeed your God helps you!" So David accepted them and made them leaders of raiding bands. 18Then the Spirit took control of Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said: We are yours, David, we are with you, son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to him who helps you, for your God helps you. So David received them and made them leaders of his troops.
19Some men from Manasseh joined David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (But in the end they did not help the Philistines because, after taking counsel, the Philistine lords sent David away, saying: "It would be disastrous for us if he deserts to his master Saul.")19Some Manassites defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. However, they did not help the Philistines because the Philistine rulers sent David away after a discussion. They said, "It will be our heads if he defects to his master Saul."
20When David went to Ziklag, the men of Manasseh who joined him were Adnach, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, leaders of a thousand soldiers each in the tribe of Manasseh.20When David went to Ziklag, some men from Manasseh defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs of thousands in Manasseh.
21They helped David fight against raiding bands, for all of them were warriors and leaders in the army.21They helped David against the raiders, for they were all brave warriors and commanders in the army.
22Each day men came to help David until his army became very large. 22At that time, men came day after day to help David until there was a great army, like an army of God.
23The following is a record of the armed warriors who came with their leaders and joined David in Hebron in order to make David king in Saul's place, in accordance with the LORD's decree: 23The numbers of the armed troops who came to David at Hebron to turn Saul's kingdom over to him, according to the LORD's word, were as follows:
24From Judah came 6,800 trained warriors carrying shields and spears. 24From the Judahites: 6,800 armed troops bearing shields and spears.
25From Simeon there were 7,100 warriors. 25From the Simeonites: 7,100 brave warriors ready for war.
26From Levi there were 4,600.26From the Levites: 4,600
27Jehoiada, the leader of Aaron's descendants, brought 3,700 men with him,27in addition to Jehoiada, leader of the house of Aaron, with 3,700 men;
28along with Zadok, a young warrior, and twenty-two leaders from his family. 28and Zadok, a young brave warrior, with 22 commanders from his own ancestral house.
29From Benjamin, Saul's tribe, there were 3,000, most of whom, up to that time, had been loyal to Saul. 29From the Benjaminites, the relatives of Saul: 3,000 (up to that time the majority of the Benjaminites maintained their allegiance to the house of Saul).
30From Ephraim there were 20,800 warriors, who had brought fame to their families. 30From the Ephraimites: 20,800 brave warriors who were famous men in their ancestral houses.
31From the half tribe of Manasseh there were 18,000 who had been designated by name to come and make David king. 31From half the tribe of Manasseh: 18,000 designated by name to come and make David king.
32From Issachar there were 200 leaders and all their relatives at their command--they understood the times and knew what Israel should do. 32From the Issacharites, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do: 200 chiefs with all their relatives under their command.
33From Zebulun there were 50,000 warriors who were prepared for battle, equipped with all kinds of weapons, and ready to give their undivided loyalty. 33From Zebulun: 50,000 who could serve in the army, trained for battle with all kinds of weapons of war, with one purpose to help David.
34From Naphtali there were 1,000 officers, along with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears. 34From Naphtali: 1,000 commanders accompanied by 37,000 men with shield and spear.
35From Dan there were 28,600 men prepared for battle. 35From the Danites: 28,600 trained for battle.
36From Asher there were 40,000 warriors prepared for battle. 36From Asher: 40,000 who could serve in the army, trained for battle.
37From the other side of the Jordan, from Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh, there were 120,000 men armed with all kinds of weapons. 37From across the Jordan--from the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh: 120,000 men equipped with all the military weapons of war.
38All these men were warriors who were ready to march. They came to Hebron to make David king over all Israel by acclamation; all the rest of the Israelites also were in agreement that David should become king.38All these warriors, lined up in battle formation, came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of Israel was also of one mind to make David king.
39They spent three days feasting there with David, for their relatives had given them provisions.39They spent three days there eating and drinking with David, for their relatives had provided for them.
40Also their neighbors, from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, were bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen. There were large supplies of flour, fig cakes, raisins, wine, olive oil, beef, and lamb, for Israel was celebrating. 40In addition, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali came and brought food on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen--abundant provisions of flour, fig cakes, raisins, wine and oil, oxen, and sheep. Indeed, there was joy in Israel.
