After this Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He stayed out of Judea because the Jewish leaders wanted to kill him.1After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, because he didn't want to travel in Judea, since the Jewish leaders there were trying to kill him.
Now the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near.2Now the Jewish Festival of Tents was approaching.
So Jesus' brothers advised him, "Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples may see your miracles that you are performing.3So his brothers told him, "You should leave this place and go to Judea, so that your disciples can see the actions that you're doing,
For no one who seeks to make a reputation for himself does anything in secret. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world."4since no one acts in secret if he wants to be known publicly. If you're going to do these things, you should reveal yourself to the world!"
(For not even his own brothers believed in him.) 5Not even his brothers believed in him.
So Jesus replied, "My time has not yet arrived, but you are ready at any opportunity!6Jesus told them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I am testifying about it that its deeds are evil.7The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its actions are evil.
You go up to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feast because my time has not yet fully arrived."8Go up to the festival yourselves. I am not going to this festival yet, because my time hasn't fully come yet."
When he had said this, he remained in Galilee. 9After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then Jesus himself also went up, not openly but in secret.10But after his brothers had gone up to the festival, he went up himself, not openly but, as it were, in secret.
So the Jewish leaders were looking for him at the feast, asking, "Where is he?"11The Jewish leaders kept looking for him at the festival, asking, "Where is that man?"
There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He is a good man," but others, "He deceives the common people."12And there was a great deal of discussion about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He is a good man," while others were saying, "No, he is deceiving the crowds!"
However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jewish leaders. 13Nevertheless, no one would speak openly about him because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.
When the feast was half over, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.14Halfway through the festival, Jesus went up to the Temple and began teaching.
Then the Jewish leaders were astonished and said, "How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?"15The Jewish leaders were astonished and remarked, "How can this man be so educated when he has never gone to school?"
So Jesus replied, "My teaching is not from me, but from the one who sent me.16Jesus replied to them, "My teaching is not mine but comes from the one who sent me.
If anyone wants to do God's will, he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority.17If anyone wants to do his will, he'll know whether this teaching is from God or whether I'm speaking on my own.
The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness in him.18The one who speaks on his own seeks his own praise. But the one who seeks the praise of him who sent him is genuine, and there's nothing false in him.
Hasn't Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law! Why do you want to kill me?" 19Moses gave you the Law, didn't he? Yet none of you is keeping the Law. Why are you trying to kill me?"
The crowd answered, "You're possessed by a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"20The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"
Jesus replied, "I performed one miracle and you are all amazed.21Jesus answered them, "I performed one action, and all of you are astonished.
However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child on the Sabbath.22Moses gave you circumcision—not that it is from Moses, but from the Patriarchs—and so you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
But if a male child is circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?23If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a man perfectly well on the Sabbath?
Do not judge according to external appearance, but judge with proper judgment." 24Stop judging by appearances, but judge with righteous judgment!"
Then some of the residents of Jerusalem began to say, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?25Then some of the people of Jerusalem began saying, "This is the man they are trying to kill, isn't it?
Yet here he is, speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to him. Do the rulers really know that this man is the Christ?26And look, he is speaking in public, and they are not saying anything to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Messiah?
But we know where this man comes from. Whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from." 27We know where this man comes from. But when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he comes from."
Then Jesus, while teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "You both know me and know where I come from! And I have not come on my own initiative, but the one who sent me is true. You do not know him,28At this point Jesus, still teaching in the Temple, shouted, "So you know me and know where I've come from? I haven't come on my own accord. But the one who sent me is true, and he's the one you don't know.
but I know him, because I have come from him and he sent me." 29I know him because I've come from him, and he sent me."
So then they tried to seize Jesus, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.30Then the Jewish leaders tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come.
Yet many of the crowd believed in him and said, "Whenever the Christ comes, he won't perform more miraculous signs than this man did, will he?" 31However, many in the crowd believed in him. They kept saying, "When the Messiah comes, he won't do more signs than this man has done, will he?"
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Jesus, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.32The Pharisees heard the crowd debating these things about him, so the high priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest Jesus.
Then Jesus said, "I will be with you for only a little while longer, and then I am going to the one who sent me.33Then Jesus said, "I'll be with you only a little while longer, and then I'm going back to the one who sent me.
You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come." 34You'll look for me but won't find me. And where I am, you cannot come."
Then the Jewish leaders said to one another, "Where is he going to go that we cannot find him? He is not going to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he?35Then the Jewish leaders asked one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we won't be able to find him? Surely he's not going to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he?
What did he mean by saying, 'You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come'?" 36What does this statement mean that he said, 'You'll look for me but won't find me,' and, 'Where I am, you cannot come'?"
On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and37On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!
let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, 'From within him will flow rivers of living water.'"38The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have rivers of living water flowing from his heart."
(Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.) 39Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who were believing in him were to receive, because the Spirit was not yet present and Jesus had not yet been glorified.
When they heard these words, some of the crowd began to say, "This really is the Prophet!"40When they heard these words, some in the crowd were saying, "This really is the Prophet,"
Others said, "This is the Christ!" But still others said, "No, for the Christ doesn't come from Galilee, does he?41while others were saying, "This is the Messiah!" But some were saying, "The Messiah doesn't come from Galilee, does he?
Don't the scriptures say that the Christ is a descendant of David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"42Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah is from David's family and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"
So there was a division in the crowd because of Jesus.43So there was a division in the crowd because of him.
Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. 44Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.
Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why didn't you bring him back with you?"45Then the officers returned to the high priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him?"
The officers replied, "No one ever spoke like this man!"46The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like that!"
Then the Pharisees answered, "You haven't been deceived too, have you?47Then the Pharisees replied to them, "You haven't been deceived, too, have you?
None of the rulers or the Pharisees have believed in him, have they?48None of the authorities or Pharisees has believed in him, have they?
But this rabble who do not know the law are accursed!" 49But this mob that does not know the Law—they're under a curse!"
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before and who was one of the rulers, said,50One of their own, Nicodemus (the man who had previously met with Jesus), asked them,
"Our law doesn't condemn a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?"51"Surely our Law does not condemn a person without first hearing from him and finding out what he is doing, does it?"
They replied, "You aren't from Galilee too, are you? Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophet comes from Galilee!" 52They answered him, "You aren't from Galilee, too, are you? Search and see that no prophet comes from Galilee."
[[And each one departed to his own house.53Then all of them went to their own homes.
