After this Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He stayed out of Judea because the Jewish leaders wanted to kill him.1Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα περιεπάτει Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ οὐ γὰρ ἤθελεν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ περιπατεῖν ὅτι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀποκτεῖναι
Now the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near.2ἦν δὲ ἐγγὺς ἑορτὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων σκηνοπηγία
So Jesus' brothers advised him, "Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples may see your miracles that you are performing.3εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Μετάβηθι ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν ἵνα καὶ οἱ μαθηταί σου θεωρήσουσιν «τὰ ἔργα» σοῦ ποιεῖς
For no one who seeks to make a reputation for himself does anything in secret. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world."4οὐδεὶς γάρ τι ἐν κρυπτῷ ποιεῖ καὶ ζητεῖ αὐτὸς ἐν παρρησίᾳ εἶναι εἰ ταῦτα ποιεῖς φανέρωσον σεαυτὸν τῷ κόσμῳ
(For not even his own brothers believed in him.) 5οὐδὲ γὰρ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν
So Jesus replied, "My time has not yet arrived, but you are ready at any opportunity!6Λέγει οὖν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς καιρὸς ἐμὸς οὔπω πάρεστιν δὲ καιρὸς ὑμέτερος πάντοτέ ἐστιν ἕτοιμος
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I am testifying about it that its deeds are evil.7οὐ δύναται κόσμος μισεῖν ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ δὲ μισεῖ ὅτι ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ πονηρά ἐστιν
You go up to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feast because my time has not yet fully arrived."8ὑμεῖς ἀνάβητε εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν ἐγὼ οὐκ ἀναβαίνω εἰς τὴν ἑορτὴν ταύτην ὅτι ἐμὸς καιρὸς οὔπω πεπλήρωται
When he had said this, he remained in Galilee. 9Ταῦτα δὲ εἰπὼν αὐτὸς* ἔμεινεν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ
But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then Jesus himself also went up, not openly but in secret.10Ὡς δὲ ἀνέβησαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν τότε καὶ αὐτὸς ἀνέβη οὐ φανερῶς ἀλλὰ ὡς ἐν κρυπτῷ
So the Jewish leaders were looking for him at the feast, asking, "Where is he?"11Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ ἔλεγον Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος
There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He is a good man," but others, "He deceives the common people."12καὶ γογγυσμὸς περὶ αὐτοῦ ἦν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς ὄχλοις οἱ μὲν ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἀγαθός ἐστιν Ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον Οὔ ἀλλὰ πλανᾷ τὸν ὄχλον
However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jewish leaders. 13Οὐδεὶς μέντοι παρρησίᾳ ἐλάλει περὶ αὐτοῦ διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων
When the feast was half over, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.14Ἤδη δὲ τῆς ἑορτῆς μεσούσης ἀνέβη Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ ἐδίδασκεν
Then the Jewish leaders were astonished and said, "How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?"15ἐθαύμαζον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες Πῶς οὗτος γράμματα οἶδεν μὴ μεμαθηκώς
So Jesus replied, "My teaching is not from me, but from the one who sent me.16Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτοῖς ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν Ἐμὴ διδαχὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὴ ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαντός με
If anyone wants to do God's will, he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority.17ἐάν τις θέλῃ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιεῖν γνώσεται περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς πότερον ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν ἐγὼ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ λαλῶ
The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness in him.18 ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ λαλῶν τὴν δόξαν τὴν ἰδίαν ζητεῖ δὲ ζητῶν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ πέμψαντος αὐτὸν οὗτος ἀληθής ἐστιν καὶ ἀδικία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν
Hasn't Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law! Why do you want to kill me?" 19Οὐ Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν* ὑμῖν τὸν νόμον καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ποιεῖ τὸν νόμον τί με ζητεῖτε ἀποκτεῖναι
The crowd answered, "You're possessed by a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"20Ἀπεκρίθη ὄχλος Δαιμόνιον ἔχεις τίς σε ζητεῖ ἀποκτεῖναι
Jesus replied, "I performed one miracle and you are all amazed.21Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἓν ἔργον ἐποίησα καὶ πάντες θαυμάζετε
However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child on the Sabbath.22διὰ τοῦτο Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὴν περιτομήν οὐχ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐστὶν ἀλλ’ ἐκ τῶν πατέρων καὶ ἐν σαββάτῳ περιτέμνετε ἄνθρωπον
But if a male child is circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?23εἰ περιτομὴν λαμβάνει (ὁ) ἄνθρωπος ἐν σαββάτῳ ἵνα μὴ λυθῇ νόμος Μωϋσέως ἐμοὶ χολᾶτε ὅτι ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐποίησα ἐν σαββάτῳ
Do not judge according to external appearance, but judge with proper judgment." 24μὴ κρίνετε κατ’ ὄψιν ἀλλὰ τὴν δικαίαν κρίσιν κρίνετε*
Then some of the residents of Jerusalem began to say, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?25Ἔλεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι
Yet here he is, speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to him. Do the rulers really know that this man is the Christ?26καὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσιν Μή‿ ποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν Χριστός
But we know where this man comes from. Whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from." 27ἀλλὰ τοῦτον οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν δὲ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔρχηται οὐδεὶς γινώσκει πόθεν ἐστίν
Then Jesus, while teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "You both know me and know where I come from! And I have not come on my own initiative, but the one who sent me is true. You do not know him,28Ἔκραξεν οὖν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων Ἰησοῦς καὶ λέγων Κἀμὲ οἴδατε καὶ οἴδατε πόθεν εἰμί καὶ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλήλυθα ἀλλ’ ἔστιν ἀληθινὸς πέμψας με ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε
but I know him, because I have come from him and he sent me." 29ἐγὼ οἶδα αὐτόν ὅτι παρ’ αὐτοῦ εἰμι κἀκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν
So then they tried to seize Jesus, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.30Ἐζήτουν οὖν αὐτὸν πιάσαι καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὴν χεῖρα ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει ὥρα αὐτοῦ
Yet many of the crowd believed in him and said, "Whenever the Christ comes, he won't perform more miraculous signs than this man did, will he?" 31Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου δὲ πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν καὶ ἔλεγον Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ μὴ πλείονα σημεῖα ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ἐποίησεν
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Jesus, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.32Ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τοῦ ὄχλου γογγύζοντος περὶ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα καὶ ἀπέστειλαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὑπηρέτας ἵνα πιάσωσιν αὐτόν
Then Jesus said, "I will be with you for only a little while longer, and then I am going to the one who sent me.33εἶπεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς Ἔτι χρόνον μικρὸν μεθ’ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με
You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come." 34ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με] καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν
Then the Jewish leaders said to one another, "Where is he going to go that we cannot find him? He is not going to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he?35Εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς Ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν μὴ εἰς τὴν Διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας
What did he mean by saying, 'You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come'?" 36τίς ἐστιν λόγος οὗτος ὃν εἶπεν Ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με] καὶ Ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν
On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and37Ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς ἑορτῆς εἱστήκει Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔκραξεν λέγων Ἐάν τις διψᾷ ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω
let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, 'From within him will flow rivers of living water.'"38 πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ καθὼς εἶπεν γραφή Ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος
(Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.)
When they heard these words, some of the crowd began to say, "This really is the Prophet!"40Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου οὖν ἀκούσαντες τῶν λόγων τούτων ἔλεγον (ὅτι) Οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς προφήτης
Others said, "This is the Christ!" But still others said, "No, for the Christ doesn't come from Galilee, does he?41Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὗτός ἐστιν Χριστός Οἱ δὲ ἔλεγον Μὴ γὰρ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας Χριστὸς ἔρχεται
Don't the scriptures say that the Christ is a descendant of David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"42οὐχ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυὶδ καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ τῆς κώμης ὅπου ἦν Δαυὶδ ἔρχεται Χριστός
So there was a division in the crowd because of Jesus.43Σχίσμα οὖν ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ δι’ αὐτόν
Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. 44τινὲς δὲ ἤθελον ἐξ αὐτῶν πιάσαι αὐτόν ἀλλ’ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας
Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why didn't you bring him back with you?"45Ἦλθον οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους καὶ εἶπον αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι Διὰ τί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν
The officers replied, "No one ever spoke like this man!"46Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ὑπηρέται Οὐδέποτε ἐλάλησεν οὕτως ἄνθρωπος 〈ὡς οὗτος λαλεῖ ἄνθρωπος〉
Then the Pharisees answered, "You haven't been deceived too, have you?47Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε
None of the rulers or the Pharisees have believed in him, have they?48μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων
But this rabble who do not know the law are accursed!" 49ἀλλὰ ὄχλος οὗτος μὴ γινώσκων τὸν νόμον ἐπάρατοί εἰσιν
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before and who was one of the rulers, said,50Λέγει Νικόδημος πρὸς αὐτούς ἐλθὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν [τὸ] πρότερον εἷς ὢν ἐξ αὐτῶν
"Our law doesn't condemn a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?"51Μὴ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνει τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ πρῶτον παρ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ γνῷ τί ποιεῖ
They replied, "You aren't from Galilee too, are you? Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophet comes from Galilee!" 52Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶ ἐραύνησον καὶ ἴδε ὅτι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας προφήτης οὐκ ἐγείρεται
[[And each one departed to his own house.53Καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν* ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ
