After this Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He stayed out of Judea because the Jewish leaders wanted to kill him.1After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
Now the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near.2Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.
So Jesus' brothers advised him, "Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples may see your miracles that you are performing.3Therefore His brothers said to Him, "Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing.
For no one who seeks to make a reputation for himself does anything in secret. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world."4"For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world."
(For not even his own brothers believed in him.) 5For not even His brothers were believing in Him.
So Jesus replied, "My time has not yet arrived, but you are ready at any opportunity!6So Jesus said to them, "My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I am testifying about it that its deeds are evil.7"The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.
You go up to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feast because my time has not yet fully arrived."8"Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come."
When he had said this, he remained in Galilee. 9Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.
But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then Jesus himself also went up, not openly but in secret.10But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret.
So the Jewish leaders were looking for him at the feast, asking, "Where is he?"11So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, "Where is He?"
There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He is a good man," but others, "He deceives the common people."12There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, "He is a good man"; others were saying, "No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray."
However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jewish leaders. 13Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews.
When the feast was half over, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.14But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach.
Then the Jewish leaders were astonished and said, "How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?"15The Jews then were astonished, saying, "How has this man become learned, having never been educated?"
So Jesus replied, "My teaching is not from me, but from the one who sent me.16So Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.
If anyone wants to do God's will, he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority.17"If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.
The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness in him.18"He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
Hasn't Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law! Why do you want to kill me?" 19"Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?"
The crowd answered, "You're possessed by a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"20The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?"
Jesus replied, "I performed one miracle and you are all amazed.21Jesus answered them, "I did one deed, and you all marvel.
However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child on the Sabbath.22"For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.
But if a male child is circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?23"If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath?
Do not judge according to external appearance, but judge with proper judgment." 24"Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment."
Then some of the residents of Jerusalem began to say, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?25So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill?
Yet here he is, speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to him. Do the rulers really know that this man is the Christ?26"Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they?
But we know where this man comes from. Whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from." 27"However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from."
Then Jesus, while teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "You both know me and know where I come from! And I have not come on my own initiative, but the one who sent me is true. You do not know him,28Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, "You both know Me and know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.
but I know him, because I have come from him and he sent me." 29"I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me."
So then they tried to seize Jesus, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.30So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
Yet many of the crowd believed in him and said, "Whenever the Christ comes, he won't perform more miraculous signs than this man did, will he?" 31But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, "When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?"
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Jesus, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him.
Then Jesus said, "I will be with you for only a little while longer, and then I am going to the one who sent me.33Therefore Jesus said, "For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me.
You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come." 34"You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come."
Then the Jewish leaders said to one another, "Where is he going to go that we cannot find him? He is not going to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he?35The Jews then said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He?
What did he mean by saying, 'You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come'?" 36"What is this statement that He said, 'You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come '?"
On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and37Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, 'From within him will flow rivers of living water.'"38"He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'"
(Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.) 39But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
When they heard these words, some of the crowd began to say, "This really is the Prophet!"40Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, "This certainly is the Prophet."
Others said, "This is the Christ!" But still others said, "No, for the Christ doesn't come from Galilee, does he?41Others were saying, "This is the Christ." Still others were saying, "Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?
Don't the scriptures say that the Christ is a descendant of David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"42"Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"
So there was a division in the crowd because of Jesus.43So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him.
Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. 44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why didn't you bring him back with you?"45The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?"
The officers replied, "No one ever spoke like this man!"46The officers answered, "Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks."
Then the Pharisees answered, "You haven't been deceived too, have you?47The Pharisees then answered them, "You have not also been led astray, have you?
None of the rulers or the Pharisees have believed in him, have they?48"No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?
But this rabble who do not know the law are accursed!" 49"But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed."
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before and who was one of the rulers, said,50Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them,
"Our law doesn't condemn a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?"51"Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?"
They replied, "You aren't from Galilee too, are you? Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophet comes from Galilee!" 52They answered him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee."
[[And each one departed to his own house.53Everyone went to his home.
