Here is a message about Tyre: Wail, you large ships, for the port is too devastated to enter! From the land of Cyprus this news is announced to them. 1A prophecy against Tyre: Wail, you ships of Tarshish! For Tyre is destroyed and left without house or harbor. From the land of Cyprus word has come to them.
Lament, you residents of the coast, you merchants of Sidon who travel over the sea, whose agents sail over2Be silent, you people of the island and you merchants of Sidon, whom the seafarers have enriched.
the deep waters! Grain from the Shihor region, crops grown near the Nile she receives; she is the trade center of the nations. 3On the great waters came the grain of the Shihor; the harvest of the Nile was the revenue of Tyre, and she became the marketplace of the nations.
Be ashamed, O Sidon, for the sea says this, O fortress of the sea: "I have not gone into labor or given birth; I have not raised young men or brought up young women." 4Be ashamed, Sidon, and you fortress of the sea, for the sea has spoken: "I have neither been in labor nor given birth; I have neither reared sons nor brought up daughters."
When the news reaches Egypt, they will be shaken by what has happened to Tyre. 5When word comes to Egypt, they will be in anguish at the report from Tyre.
Travel to Tarshish! Wail, you residents of the coast! 6Cross over to Tarshish; wail, you people of the island.
Is this really your boisterous city whose origins are in the distant past, and whose feet led her to a distant land to reside? 7Is this your city of revelry, the old, old city, whose feet have taken her to settle in far-off lands?
Who planned this for royal Tyre, whose merchants are princes, whose traders are the dignitaries of the earth? 8Who planned this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traders are renowned in the earth?
The LORD who commands armies planned it--to dishonor the pride that comes from all her beauty, to humiliate all the dignitaries of the earth. 9The LORD Almighty planned it, to bring down her pride in all her splendor and to humble all who are renowned on the earth.
Daughter Tarshish, travel back to your land, as one crosses the Nile; there is no longer any marketplace in Tyre. 10Till your land as they do along the Nile, Daughter Tarshish, for you no longer have a harbor.
The LORD stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook kingdoms; he gave the order to destroy Canaan's fortresses. 11The LORD has stretched out his hand over the sea and made its kingdoms tremble. He has given an order concerning Phoenicia that her fortresses be destroyed.
He said, "You will no longer celebrate, oppressed virgin daughter Sidon! Get up, travel to Cyprus, but you will find no relief there." 12He said, "No more of your reveling, Virgin Daughter Sidon, now crushed! "Up, cross over to Cyprus; even there you will find no rest."
Look at the land of the Chaldeans, these people who have lost their identity! The Assyrians have made it a home for wild animals. They erected their siege towers, demolished its fortresses, and turned it into a heap of ruins. 13Look at the land of the Babylonians, this people that is now of no account! The Assyrians have made it a place for desert creatures; they raised up their siege towers, they stripped its fortresses bare and turned it into a ruin.
Wail, you large ships, for your fortress is destroyed! 14Wail, you ships of Tarshish; your fortress is destroyed!
At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the typical life span of a king. At the end of seventy years Tyre will try to attract attention again, like the prostitute in the popular song: 15At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the span of a king's life. But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:
"Take the harp, go through the city, forgotten prostitute! Play it well, play lots of songs, so you'll be noticed!" 16"Take up a harp, walk through the city, you forgotten prostitute; play the harp well, sing many a song, so that you will be remembered."
At the end of seventy years the LORD will revive Tyre. She will start making money again by selling her services to all the earth's kingdoms.17At the end of seventy years, the LORD will deal with Tyre. She will return to her lucrative prostitution and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.
Her profits and earnings will be set apart for the LORD. They will not be stored up or accumulated, for her profits will be given to those who live in the LORD's presence and will be used to purchase large quantities of food and beautiful clothes. 18Yet her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the LORD; they will not be stored up or hoarded. Her profits will go to those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothes.
