For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.1For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.
With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish.2With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out.
It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.3For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.
You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.4You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob.
Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.5Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies.
I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;6For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me.
but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.7For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame.
In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.8In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah
But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.9But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.
You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.10You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us.
You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.11You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations.
You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.12You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale.
You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.13You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.
You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.14You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.
I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame15All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face,
at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.16at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge.
All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant.17All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant.
Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.18Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path.
But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness.19But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.
If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?21would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?
Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.22Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.23Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever.
Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?24Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression?
We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.25For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth.
Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.26Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion.
