and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him."2"This is John the Baptist," he told his servants. "He has been raised from the dead, and that's why miraculous powers are at work in him."
Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,3For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her."4since John had been telling him, "It's not lawful for you to have her."
Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.5Though Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd since they regarded John as a prophet.
On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much6When Herod's birthday celebration came, Herodias's daughter danced before them and pleased Herod.
that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.7So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."8Prompted by her mother, she answered, "Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter."
The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted9Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests.
and had John beheaded in the prison.10So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison.
His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.12Then his disciples came, removed the corpse, buried it, and went and reported to Jesus.
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.13When Jesus heard about it, he withdrew from there by boat to a remote place to be alone. When the crowds heard this, they followed him on foot from the towns.
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.14When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd, had compassion on them, and healed their sick.
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food."15When evening came, the disciples approached him and said, "This place is deserted, and it is already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."16"They don't need to go away," Jesus told them. "You give them something to eat."
"We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered.17"But we only have five loaves and two fish here," they said to him.
"Bring them here to me," he said.18"Bring them here to me," he said.
And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.19Then he commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.20Everyone ate and was satisfied. They picked up twelve baskets full of leftover pieces.
The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.21Now those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.22Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,23After dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. Well into the night, he was there alone.
and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.24Meanwhile, the boat was already some distance from land, battered by the waves, because the wind was against them.
Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.25Jesus came toward them walking on the sea very early in the morning.
When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they said, and they cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."27Immediately Jesus spoke to them. "Have courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."28"Lord, if it's you," Peter answered him, "command me to come to you on the water."
"Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.29He said, "Come." And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus.
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"30But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."33Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, "Truly you are the Son of God."
When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.34When they had crossed over, they came to shore at Gennesaret.
And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him35When the men of that place recognized him, they alerted the whole vicinity and brought to him all who were sick.
and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.36They begged him that they might only touch the end of his robe, and as many as touched it were healed.
