Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,1Then Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan. He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.2where he was being tempted by the devil for 40 days. During that time he ate nothing at all, and when they were over he became hungry.
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."3The devil told him, "Since you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread."
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone.'"4Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One must not live on bread alone, but on every word of God.'"
The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.5The devil also took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant.
And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.6He told Jesus, "I will give you all this authority, along with their glory, because it has been given to me, and I give it to anyone I please.
If you worship me, it will all be yours."7So if you will worship me, all this will be yours."
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'"8But Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"
The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here.9The devil also took him into Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple. He told Jesus, "Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;10because it is written, 'God will put his angels in charge of you to watch over you carefully.
they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"11With their hands they will hold you up, so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.'"
Jesus answered, "It is said: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"12Jesus answered him, "It has been said, 'You must not tempt the Lord your God.'"
When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.13After the devil had finished tempting Jesus in every possible way, he left him until another time.
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.14Then Jesus returned to Galilee by the power of the Spirit. Meanwhile, the news about him spread throughout the surrounding country.
He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.15He began to teach in their synagogues and was continuously receiving praise from everyone.
He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,16Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been raised. As was his custom, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. When he stood up to read,
and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:17the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written,
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has anointed me to tell the good news to the poor. He has sent me to announce release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set oppressed people free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."19and to announce the year of the Lord's favor."
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. While the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him,
He began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."21he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled, as you've heard it read aloud."
All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.22All the people began to speak well of him and to wonder at the gracious words that flowed from his mouth. They said, "This is Joseph's son, isn't it?"
Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote this proverb to me: 'Physician, heal yourself!' And you will tell me, 'Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.'"23So he told them, "You will probably quote this proverb to me, 'Doctor, heal yourself! Do everything here in your hometown that we hear you did in Capernaum.'"
"Truly I tell you," he continued, "no prophet is accepted in his hometown.24He added, "I tell all of you with certainty, a prophet is not accepted in his hometown.
I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.25I'm telling you the truth—there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when it didn't rain for three years and six months and there was a severe famine everywhere in the land.
Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.26Yet Elijah wasn't sent to a single one of those widows except to one at Zarephath in Sidon.
And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed--only Naaman the Syrian."27There were also many lepers in Israel in the prophet Elisha's time, yet not one of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."
All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.28All the people in the synagogue became furious when they heard this.
They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.29They got up, forced Jesus out of the city, and led him to the edge of the hill on which their city was built, intending to throw him off.
But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.30But he walked right through the middle of them and went away.
Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people.31Then Jesus went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee, and began teaching the people on Sabbath days.
They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.32They were utterly amazed at what he taught, because his message was spoken with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,33In the synagogue was a man who had a demon. He screamed with a loud voice,
"Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"34"Oh, no! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"
"Be quiet!" Jesus said sternly. "Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.35But Jesus rebuked him. "Be quiet," he said, "and come out of him!" At this, the demon threw the man down in the middle of the synagogue and came out of him without hurting him.
All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!"36Overwhelmed with amazement, they all kept saying to one another, "What kind of statement is this?—because with authority and power he gives orders to unclean spirits, and they come out!"
And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.37So news about him spread to every place in the surrounding region.
Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.38Then Jesus got up to leave the synagogue and went into Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, so they asked Jesus about her.
So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.39He bent over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began serving them.
At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.40When the sun was setting, everyone who had any friends suffering from various diseases brought them to him. He placed his hands on each of them and began healing them.
Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.41Even demons came out of many people, screaming, "You are the Son of God!" But Jesus rebuked them and ordered them not to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.42At daybreak he left and went to a deserted place, while the crowds kept looking for him. When they came to him, they tried to keep him from leaving them.
But he said, "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent."43But he told them, "I have to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God in other cities, because I was sent to do that also."
And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.44So he continued to preach in the synagogues of Galilee.
