Psalm 88
NIV Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New International VersionInternational Standard Version
A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music. According to mahalath leannoth. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. LORD, you are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to you.1LORD, God of my salvation, by day and by night I cry out before you.
May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.2Let my prayer come before you; listen to my cry.
I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death.3For my life is filled with troubles as I approach Sheol.
I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like one without strength.4I am considered as one of those descending into the Pit, like a mighty man without strength,
I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care.5released to remain with the dead, lying in a grave like a corpse, remembered no longer, and cut off from your power.
You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.6You have assigned me to the lowest part of the Pit, to the darkest depths.
Your wrath lies heavily on me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.7Your anger lies heavily upon me; you pound me with all your waves. Interlude
You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape;8You caused my acquaintances to shun me; you make me extremely abhorrent to them. Restrained, I am unable to go out.
my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you.9My eyes languish on account of my affliction; all day long I call out to you, LORD, I spread out my hands to you.
Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do their spirits rise up and praise you?10Can you perform wonders for the dead? Can departed spirits stand up to praise you? Interlude
Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction?11Can your gracious love be declared in the grave or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?12Can your awesome deeds be known in darkness or your righteousness in the land of oblivion?
But I cry to you for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.13As for me, I cry out to you LORD, and in the morning my prayer greets you.
Why, LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me?14Why, LORD, have you rejected me? Why have you hidden your face from me?
From my youth I have suffered and been close to death; I have borne your terrors and am in despair.15Since my youth I have been oppressed and in danger of death. I bear your dread and am overwhelmed.
Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me.16Your burning anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me.
All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me.17Like waters, they engulf me all day long; they surround me on all sides.
You have taken from me friend and neighbor-- darkness is my closest friend.18You caused my friend and neighbor to shun me; and my acquaintances are confused.
