New International VersionKing James Bible
Hear what the LORD says to you, people of Israel.1Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
This is what the LORD says: "Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the heavens, though the nations are terrified by them.2Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.3For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.4They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good."5They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
No one is like you, LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.6Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
Who should not fear you, King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.7Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols.8But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.
Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple-- all made by skilled workers.9Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.
But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.10But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
"Tell them this: 'These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.'"11Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.
But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.12He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.
When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.13When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.
Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.14Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish.15They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the people of his inheritance-- the LORD Almighty is his name.16The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.
Gather up your belongings to leave the land, you who live under siege.17Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.
For this is what the LORD says: "At this time I will hurl out those who live in this land; I will bring distress on them so that they may be captured."18For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.
Woe to me because of my injury! My wound is incurable! Yet I said to myself, "This is my sickness, and I must endure it."19Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.
My tent is destroyed; all its ropes are snapped. My children are gone from me and are no more; no one is left now to pitch my tent or to set up my shelter.20My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.
The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered.21For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.
Listen! The report is coming-- a great commotion from the land of the north! It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals.22Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.
LORD, I know that people's lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.23O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
Discipline me, LORD, but only in due measure-- not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing.24O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.25Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.
