It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.1Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.2During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God,
so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.4got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.
After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.5Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"6So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?"
Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."7Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter."
"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."8Peter said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."
"Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"9Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."
Jesus answered, "Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you."10Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you."
For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.11For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, "Not all of you are clean."
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them.12So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?
"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am.13"You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.14"If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.15"For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.
Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.16"Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.
Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.17"If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
"I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: 'He who shared my bread has turned against me.'18"I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.'
"I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.19"From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He.
Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me."20"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."
After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me."21When Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me."
His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.22The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking.
One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.23There was reclining on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.
Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means."24So Simon Peter gestured to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking."
Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"25He, leaning back thus on Jesus' bosom, said to Him, "Lord, who is it?"
Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.26Jesus then answered, "That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him." So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, "What you are about to do, do quickly."27After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly."
But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.28Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him.
Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.29For some were supposing, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, "Buy the things we have need of for the feast"; or else, that he should give something to the poor.
As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.30So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and it was night.
When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him.31Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him;
If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.32if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.
"My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.33"Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.'
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.34"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."35"By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."36Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered, "Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later."
Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."37Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You."
Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!38Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
