Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South.1So Abram went up out of Egypt into the Negev—he and his wife and all his possessions—and Lot was with him.
Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.2And Abram had become extremely wealthy in livestock and silver and gold.
And he went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,3From the Negev he journeyed from place to place toward Bethel, until he came to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been pitched,
to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD.4to the site where he had built the altar. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD.
Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents.5Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.
Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.6But the land was unable to support both of them while they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they were unable to coexist.
And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.7And there was discord between the herdsmen of Abram and the herdsmen of Lot. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in the land.
So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.8So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no contention between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen. After all, we are brothers.
Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.”9Is not the whole land before you? Now separate yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”
And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.10And Lot looked out and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan, all the way to Zoar, was well watered like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.11So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself and set out toward the east. And Abram and Lot parted company.
Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom.12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD.13But the men of Sodom were wicked, sinning greatly against the LORD.
And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward;14After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram, “Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west,
for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.15for all the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever.
And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered.16I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.
Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.”17Get up and walk around the land, through its length and breadth, for I will give it to you.”
Then Abram moved his tent, and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the LORD.18So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the Oaks of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.
