Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South.1So Abram went up from Egypt into the Negev. He took his wife and all his possessions with him, as well as Lot.
Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.2(Now Abram was very wealthy in livestock, silver, and gold.)
And he went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,3And he journeyed from place to place from the Negev as far as Bethel. He returned to the place where he had pitched his tent at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai.
to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD.4This was the place where he had first built the altar, and there Abram worshiped the LORD.
Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents.5Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents.
Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.6But the land could not support them while they were living side by side. Because their possessions were so great, they were not able to live alongside one another.
And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.7So there were quarrels between Abram's herdsmen and Lot's herdsmen. (Now the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.)
So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.8Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no quarreling between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are close relatives.
Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.”9Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself now from me. If you go to the left, then I'll go to the right, but if you go to the right, then I'll go to the left."
And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.10Lot looked up and saw the whole region of the Jordan. He noticed that all of it was well-watered (before the LORD obliterated Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, all the way to Zoar.
Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.11Lot chose for himself the whole region of the Jordan and traveled toward the east. So the relatives separated from each other.
Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom.12Abram settled in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled among the cities of the Jordan plain and pitched his tents next to Sodom.
But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD.13(Now the people of Sodom were extremely wicked rebels against the LORD.)
And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward;14After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram, "Look from the place where you stand to the north, south, east, and west.
for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.15I will give all the land that you see to you and your descendants forever.
And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered.16And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants also can be counted.
Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.”17Get up and walk throughout the land, for I will give it to you."
Then Abram moved his tent, and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the LORD.18So Abram moved his tents and went to live by the oaks of Mamre in Hebron, and he built an altar to the LORD there.
