New King James VersionNew International Version
Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South.1So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him.
Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.2Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold.
And he went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,3From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier
to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD.4and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD.
Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents.5Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.
Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.6But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.
And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.7And quarreling arose between Abram's herders and Lot's. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.
So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.8So Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives.
Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.”9Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left."
And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.10Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.11So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:
Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom.12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.
But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD.13Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.
And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward;14The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.
for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.15All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.
And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered.16I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.
Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.”17Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you."
Then Abram moved his tent, and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the LORD.18So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the LORD.
