Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the LORD.”1And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said.
Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.2Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil.
And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD.3So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD,
Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering,4while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.5but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
So the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?6“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?
If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.8Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”9And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.10“What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.11Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”12When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
And Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear!13But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”14Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
And the LORD said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.15“Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him.
Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.16So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Enoch.17And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch.
To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.18Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech.
Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.19And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock.
His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute.21And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.22And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me.23Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.”25And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD.26And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD.
