New King James VersionNew Living Translation
Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the LORD.”1Now Adam had sexual relations with his wife, Eve, and she became pregnant. When she gave birth to Cain, she said, “With the LORD’s help, I have produced a man!”
Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.2Later she gave birth to his brother and named him Abel. When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground.
And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD.3When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD.
Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering,4Abel also brought a gift—the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift,
but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.5but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.
So the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?6“Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected?
If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”7You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”
Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.8One day Cain suggested to his brother, “Let’s go out into the fields.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him.
Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”9Afterward the LORD asked Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?” “I don’t know,” Cain responded. “Am I my brother’s guardian?”
And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.10But the LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!
So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.11Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has swallowed your brother’s blood.
When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”12No longer will the ground yield good crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.”
And Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear!13Cain replied to the LORD, “My punishment is too great for me to bear!
Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”14You have banished me from the land and from your presence; you have made me a homeless wanderer. Anyone who finds me will kill me!”
And the LORD said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.15The LORD replied, “No, for I will give a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him.
Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.16So Cain left the LORD’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. The Descendants of Cain
And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Enoch.17Cain had sexual relations with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain founded a city, which he named Enoch, after his son.
To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.18Enoch had a son named Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.
Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.19Lamech married two women. The first was named Adah, and the second was Zillah.
And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.20Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the first of those who raise livestock and live in tents.
His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute.21His brother’s name was Jubal, the first of all who play the harp and flute.
And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.22Lamech’s other wife, Zillah, gave birth to a son named Tubal-cain. He became an expert in forging tools of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain had a sister named Naamah.
Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me.23One day Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; listen to me, you wives of Lamech. I have killed a man who attacked me, a young man who wounded me.
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”24If someone who kills Cain is punished seven times, then the one who kills me will be punished seventy-seven times!” The Birth of Seth
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.”25Adam had sexual relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to another son. She named him Seth, for she said, “God has granted me another son in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.”
And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD.26When Seth grew up, he had a son and named him Enosh. At that time people first began to worship the LORD by name.
