For behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, Takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah The stock and the store, The whole supply of bread and the whole supply of water;1For behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts is about to remove from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: the whole supply of food and water,
The mighty man and the man of war, The judge and the prophet, And the diviner and the elder;2the mighty man and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the soothsayer and the elder,
The captain of fifty and the honorable man, The counselor and the skillful artisan, And the expert enchanter.3the commander of fifty and the dignitary, the counselor, the cunning magician, and the clever enchanter.
“I will give children to be their princes, And babes shall rule over them.4“I will make mere lads their leaders, and children will rule over them.”
The people will be oppressed, Every one by another and every one by his neighbor; The child will be insolent toward the elder, And the base toward the honorable.”5The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor; the young will rise up against the old, and the base against the honorable.
When a man takes hold of his brother In the house of his father, saying, “You have clothing; You be our ruler, And let these ruins be under your power,”6A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You have a cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this heap of rubble.”
In that day he will protest, saying, “I cannot cure your ills, For in my house is neither food nor clothing; Do not make me a ruler of the people.”7On that day he will cry aloud: “I am not a healer. I have no food or clothing in my house. Do not make me leader of the people!”
For Jerusalem stumbled, And Judah is fallen, Because their tongue and their doings Are against the LORD, To provoke the eyes of His glory.8For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they spoke and acted against the LORD, defying His glorious presence.
The look on their countenance witnesses against them, And they declare their sin as Sodom; They do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves.9The expression on their faces testifies against them, and like Sodom they flaunt their sin; they do not conceal it. Woe to them, for they have brought disaster upon themselves.
“Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them, For they shall eat the fruit of their doings.10Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their labor.
Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, For the reward of his hands shall be given him.11Woe to the wicked; disaster is upon them! For they will be repaid with what their hands have done.
As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.”12Youths oppress My people, and women rule over them. O My people, your guides mislead you; they turn you from your paths.
The LORD stands up to plead, And stands to judge the people.13The LORD arises to contend; He stands to judge the people.
The LORD will enter into judgment With the elders of His people And His princes: “For you have eaten up the vineyard; The plunder of the poor is in your houses.14The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of His people: “You have devoured the vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your houses.
What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the faces of the poor?” Says the Lord GOD of hosts.15Why do you crush My people and grind the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.
Moreover the LORD says: “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, And walk with outstretched necks And wanton eyes, Walking and mincing as they go, Making a jingling with their feet,16The LORD also says: “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty—walking with heads held high and wanton eyes, prancing and skipping as they go, jingling the bracelets on their ankles—
Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, And the LORD will uncover their secret parts.”17the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will make their foreheads bare.”
In that day the Lord will take away the finery: The jingling anklets, the scarves, and the crescents;18In that day the Lord will take away their finery: their anklets and headbands and crescents;
The pendants, the bracelets, and the veils;19their pendants, bracelets, and veils;
The headdresses, the leg ornaments, and the headbands; The perfume boxes, the charms,20their headdresses, ankle chains, and sashes; their perfume bottles and charms;
     and the rings; The nose jewels,21their signet rings and nose rings;
     the festal apparel, and the mantles; The outer garments, the purses,22their festive robes, capes, cloaks, and purses;
     and the mirrors; The fine linen, the turbans, and the robes.23and their mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and shawls.
And so it shall be: Instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench; Instead of a sash, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, baldness; Instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty.24Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame.
Your men shall fall by the sword, And your mighty in the war.25Your men will fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle.
Her gates shall lament and mourn, And she being desolate shall sit on the ground.26And the gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
