Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them,1The LORD spoke again to Moses and Aaron, telling them,
“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘These are the animals which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth:2“Say to the Israelites, ‘Of all the beasts of the earth, these ones you may eat:
Among the animals, whatever divides the hoof, having cloven hooves and chewing the cud—that you may eat.3You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud.
Nevertheless these you shall not eat among those that chew the cud or those that have cloven hooves: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you;4But of those that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, you are not to eat the following: The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
the rock hyrax, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you;5The rock badger, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
the hare, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you;6The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.7And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
Their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. They are unclean to you.8You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
‘These you may eat of all that are in the water: whatever in the water has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers—that you may eat.9Of all the creatures that live in the water, whether in the seas or in the streams, you may eat anything with fins and scales.
But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you.10But the following among all the teeming life and creatures in the water are detestable to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales.
They shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination.11They shall be an abomination to you; you must not eat their meat, and you must detest their carcasses.
Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales—that shall be an abomination to you.12Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales shall be detestable to you.
‘And these you shall regard as an abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard,13Additionally, you are to detest the following birds, and they must not be eaten because they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
the kite, and the falcon after its kind;14the kite, any kind of falcon,
every raven after its kind,15any kind of raven,
the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the sea gull, and the hawk after its kind;16the ostrich, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,
the little owl, the fisher owl, and the screech owl;17the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,
the white owl, the jackdaw, and the carrion vulture;18the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,
the stork, the heron after its kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.19the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.
‘All flying insects that creep on all fours shall be an abomination to you.20All flying insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.
Yet these you may eat of every flying insect that creeps on all fours: those which have jointed legs above their feet with which to leap on the earth.21However, you may eat the following kinds of flying insects that walk on all fours: those having jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground.
These you may eat: the locust after its kind, the destroying locust after its kind, the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.22Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, or grasshopper.
But all other flying insects which have four feet shall be an abomination to you.23All other flying insects that have four legs are detestable to you.
‘By these you shall become unclean; whoever touches the carcass of any of them shall be unclean until evening;24These creatures will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
whoever carries part of the carcass of any of them shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening:25and whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening.
The carcass of any animal which divides the foot, but is not cloven-hoofed or does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. Everyone who touches it shall be unclean.26Every animal with hooves not completely divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you. Whoever touches any of them will be unclean.
And whatever goes on its paws, among all kinds of animals that go on all fours, those are unclean to you. Whoever touches any such carcass shall be unclean until evening.27All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
Whoever carries any such carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. It is unclean to you.28and anyone who picks up a carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you.
‘These also shall be unclean to you among the creeping things that creep on the earth: the mole, the mouse, and the large lizard after its kind;29The following creatures that move along the ground are unclean for you: the mole, the mouse, any kind of great lizard,
the gecko, the monitor lizard, the sand reptile, the sand lizard, and the chameleon.30the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon.
These are unclean to you among all that creep. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.31These animals are unclean for you among all the crawling creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.
Anything on which any of them falls, when they are dead shall be unclean, whether it is any item of wood or clothing or skin or sack, whatever item it is, in which any work is done, it must be put in water. And it shall be unclean until evening; then it shall be clean.32When one of them dies and falls on something, that article becomes unclean; any article of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work must be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean.
Any earthen vessel into which any of them falls you shall break; and whatever is in it shall be unclean:33If any of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean; you must break the pot.
in such a vessel, any edible food upon which water falls becomes unclean, and any drink that may be drunk from it becomes unclean.34Any food coming into contact with water from that pot will be unclean, and any drink in such a container will be unclean.
And everything on which a part of any such carcass falls shall be unclean; whether it is an oven or cooking stove, it shall be broken down; for they are unclean, and shall be unclean to you.35Anything upon which one of their carcasses falls will be unclean. If it is an oven or cooking pot, it must be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you.
Nevertheless a spring or a cistern, in which there is plenty of water, shall be clean, but whatever touches any such carcass becomes unclean.36Nevertheless, a spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but one who touches a carcass in it will be unclean.
And if a part of any such carcass falls on any planting seed which is to be sown, it remains clean.37If a carcass falls on any seed for sowing, the seed is clean;
But if water is put on the seed, and if a part of any such carcass falls on it, it becomes unclean to you.38but if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.
‘And if any animal which you may eat dies, he who touches its carcass shall be unclean until evening.39If an animal that you may eat dies, anyone who touches the carcass will be unclean until evening.
He who eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. He also who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.40Whoever eats from the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening, and anyone who picks up the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
‘And every creeping thing that creeps on the earth shall be an abomination. It shall not be eaten.41Every creature that moves along the ground is detestable; it must not be eaten.
Whatever crawls on its belly, whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet among all creeping things that creep on the earth—these you shall not eat, for they are an abomination.42Do not eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it crawls on its belly or walks on four or more feet; for such creatures are detestable.
You shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creeps; nor shall you make yourselves unclean with them, lest you be defiled by them.43Do not defile yourselves by any crawling creature; do not become unclean or defiled by them.
For I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creeping thing that creeps on the earth.44For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any creature that crawls along the ground.
For I am the LORD who brings you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.45For I am the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt so that I would be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.
‘This is the law of the animals and the birds and every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that creeps on the earth,46This is the law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that crawl along the ground.
to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.’ ”47You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between animals that may be eaten and those that may not.’ ”
