Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them,1The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron: "
“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘These are the animals which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth:2Tell the Israelites: You may eat all these kinds of land animals.
Among the animals, whatever divides the hoof, having cloven hooves and chewing the cud—that you may eat.3You may eat any animal with divided hooves and that chews the cud.
Nevertheless these you shall not eat among those that chew the cud or those that have cloven hooves: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you;4But among the ones that chew the cud or have divided hooves you are not to eat these: the camel, though it chews the cud, does not have divided hooves--it is unclean for you;
the rock hyrax, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you;5the hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have hooves--it is unclean for you;
the hare, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you;6the hare, though it chews the cud, does not have hooves--it is unclean for you;
and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.7the pig, though it has divided hooves, does not chew the cud--it is unclean for you.
Their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. They are unclean to you.8Do not eat any of their meat or touch their carcasses--they are unclean for you."
‘These you may eat of all that are in the water: whatever in the water has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers—that you may eat.9This is what you may eat from all that is in the water: You may eat everything in the water that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or streams.
But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you.10But these are to be detestable to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales among all the swarming things and other living creatures in the water.
They shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination.11They are to remain detestable to you; you must not eat any of their meat, and you must detest their carcasses.
Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales—that shall be an abomination to you.12Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales will be detestable to you."
‘And these you shall regard as an abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard,13You are to detest these birds. They must not be eaten because they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
the kite, and the falcon after its kind;14the kite, any kind of falcon,
every raven after its kind,15every kind of raven,
the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the sea gull, and the hawk after its kind;16the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,
the little owl, the fisher owl, and the screech owl;17the little owl, the cormorant, the long-eared owl,
the white owl, the jackdaw, and the carrion vulture;18the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,
the stork, the heron after its kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.19the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat."
‘All flying insects that creep on all fours shall be an abomination to you.20All winged insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you.
Yet these you may eat of every flying insect that creeps on all fours: those which have jointed legs above their feet with which to leap on the earth.21But you may eat these kinds of all the winged insects that walk on all fours: those that have jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground.
These you may eat: the locust after its kind, the destroying locust after its kind, the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.22You may eat these: any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, and grasshopper.
But all other flying insects which have four feet shall be an abomination to you.23All other winged insects that have four feet are to be detestable to you."
‘By these you shall become unclean; whoever touches the carcass of any of them shall be unclean until evening;24These will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
whoever carries part of the carcass of any of them shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening:25and whoever carries any of their carcasses must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
The carcass of any animal which divides the foot, but is not cloven-hoofed or does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. Everyone who touches it shall be unclean.26All animals that have hooves but do not have a divided hoof and do not chew the cud are unclean for you. Whoever touches them becomes unclean.
And whatever goes on its paws, among all kinds of animals that go on all fours, those are unclean to you. Whoever touches any such carcass shall be unclean until evening.27All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
Whoever carries any such carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. It is unclean to you.28and anyone who carries their carcasses must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you."
‘These also shall be unclean to you among the creeping things that creep on the earth: the mole, the mouse, and the large lizard after its kind;29These creatures that swarm on the ground are unclean for you: the weasel, the mouse, any kind of large lizard,
the gecko, the monitor lizard, the sand reptile, the sand lizard, and the chameleon.30the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon.
These are unclean to you among all that creep. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.31These are unclean for you among all the swarming creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening.
Anything on which any of them falls, when they are dead shall be unclean, whether it is any item of wood or clothing or skin or sack, whatever item it is, in which any work is done, it must be put in water. And it shall be unclean until evening; then it shall be clean.32When any one of them dies and falls on anything it becomes unclean--any item of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work. It is to be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean.
Any earthen vessel into which any of them falls you shall break; and whatever is in it shall be unclean:33If any of them falls into any clay pot, everything in it will become unclean; you must break it.
in such a vessel, any edible food upon which water falls becomes unclean, and any drink that may be drunk from it becomes unclean.34Any edible food coming into contact with that unclean water will become unclean, and any drinkable liquid in any container will become unclean.
And everything on which a part of any such carcass falls shall be unclean; whether it is an oven or cooking stove, it shall be broken down; for they are unclean, and shall be unclean to you.35Anything one of their carcasses falls on will become unclean. If it is an oven or stove, it must be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you.
Nevertheless a spring or a cistern, in which there is plenty of water, shall be clean, but whatever touches any such carcass becomes unclean.36A spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but someone who touches a carcass in it will become unclean.
And if a part of any such carcass falls on any planting seed which is to be sown, it remains clean.37If one of their carcasses falls on any seed that is to be sown, it is clean;
But if water is put on the seed, and if a part of any such carcass falls on it, it becomes unclean to you.38but if water has been put on the seed and one of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean for you."
‘And if any animal which you may eat dies, he who touches its carcass shall be unclean until evening.39If one of the animals that you use for food dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean until evening.
He who eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. He also who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.40Anyone who eats some of its carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. Anyone who carries its carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening."
‘And every creeping thing that creeps on the earth shall be an abomination. It shall not be eaten.41All the creatures that swarm on the earth are detestable; they must not be eaten.
Whatever crawls on its belly, whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet among all creeping things that creep on the earth—these you shall not eat, for they are an abomination.42Do not eat any of the creatures that swarm on the earth, anything that moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet, for they are detestable.
You shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creeps; nor shall you make yourselves unclean with them, lest you be defiled by them.43Do not become contaminated by any creature that swarms; do not become unclean or defiled by them.
For I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creeping thing that creeps on the earth.44For I am Yahweh your God, so you must consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground.
For I am the LORD who brings you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.45For I am Yahweh, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God, so you must be holy because I am holy."
‘This is the law of the animals and the birds and every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that creeps on the earth,46This is the law concerning animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that swarm on the ground,
to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.’ ”47in order to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between the animals that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten."
