Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.1Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases.
He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.2Then he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.3He told them, "Don't take anything along on your trip—no walking stick, traveling bag, bread, money, or even an extra shirt.
“Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.4When you visit a home and stay there, and go out from there,
And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”5if people don't welcome you, when you leave that city, shake its dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.6So they left and went from village to village, spreading the good news and healing diseases everywhere.
Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,7Now Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was happening. He was puzzled because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,
and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.8by others that Elijah had appeared, and by still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.
Herod said, “John I have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things?” So he sought to see Him.9Herod said, "I beheaded John. But who is this man I'm hearing so much about?" So Herod kept trying to see Jesus.
And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.10The apostles came back and told Jesus everything they had done. Then he took them away with him privately to a city called Bethsaida.
But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.11But the crowds found out about this and followed him. He welcomed them and began to speak to them about the kingdom of God and to heal those who needed healing.
When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.”12As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away to the neighboring villages and farms so they can rest and get some food, because we are here in a deserted place."
But He said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.”13But he told them, "You give them something to eat." They replied, "We have nothing more than five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all these people."
For there were about five thousand men. Then He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifty.”14Now there were about 5,000 men. So he told his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about 50."
And they did so, and made them all sit down.15They did this and got all of them seated.
Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.16Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and kept giving them to the disciples to pass on to the crowd.
So they all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.17All of them ate and were filled. When they collected the leftover pieces, there were twelve baskets.
And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”18One day, while Jesus was praying privately and the disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"
So they answered and said, “John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.”19They answered, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the ancient prophets who has come back to life."
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.”20He asked them, "But who do you say I am?" "God's Messiah," Peter replied.
And He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one,21He gave them strict orders, commanding them not to tell this to anyone.
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”22He said, "The Son of Man must suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he must be killed, but on the third day he will be raised."
Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.23Then he told all of them, "If anyone wants to come with me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross every day, and follow me continuously,
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.24because whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?25What profit will a person have if he gains the whole world, but destroys himself or is lost?
For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and the holy angels.
But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God.”27I tell you with certainty, some people who are standing here wom't experience death until they see the kingdom of God."
Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray.28Now about eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John, and James with him and went up on a mountain to pray.
As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening.29While he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes turned dazzling white.
And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah,30Suddenly, two men were talking with him. They were Moses and Elijah.
who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.31They had a glorified appearance, and were discussing Jesus' departure that he would shortly bring about in Jerusalem.
But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him.32Now Peter and the men with him had been overcome by sleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus' glory and the two men standing with him.
Then it happened, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.33Just as Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter told Jesus, "Master, it's good that we're here! Let's set up three shelters —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." (Peter didn't know what he was saying.)
While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were fearful as they entered the cloud.34But while he was saying this, a cloud appeared and surrounded them, and they became terrified as they were being overshadowed by the cloud.
And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!”35Then a voice came out of the cloud and said, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen. Keep listening to him!"
When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone. But they kept quiet, and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen.36After the voice had spoken, Jesus was alone. The disciples kept silent and at that time told no one about what they had seen.
Now it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met Him.37The next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus.
Suddenly a man from the multitude cried out, saying, “Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, for he is my only child.38Suddenly, a man in the crowd shouted, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he is my only child.
And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth; and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him.39Without warning a spirit takes control of him, and he suddenly screams, goes into convulsions, and foams at the mouth. The spirit mauls him and refuses to leave him.
So I implored Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't."
Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”41Jesus answered, "You unbelieving and perverted generation! How much longer must I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here!"
And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father.42Even while the boy was coming, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
And they were all amazed at the majesty of God. But while everyone marveled at all the things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples,43All the people continued to be amazed at the greatness of God. Indeed, everyone was astonished at all the things Jesus was doing. So he told his disciples,
“Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”44"Listen carefully to these words. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands."
But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying.45But they didn't know what this meant. Indeed, the meaning was hidden from them so that they didn't understand it; and they were afraid to ask him about this statement.
Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest.46Later, an argument started among the disciples as to which of them might be the greatest.
And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him,47But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him.
and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great.”48Then he told them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me, because the one who is least among all of you is the one who is greatest."
Now John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.”49John said, "Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We tried to stop him, because he wasn't a follower like us."
But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is on our side.”50Jesus told him, "Don't stop him! Because whoever is not against you is for you."
Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem,51When the days grew closer for Jesus to be taken up to heaven, he was determined to continue his journey to Jerusalem.
and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him.52So he sent messengers on ahead of him. On their way they went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him.
But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.53But the people would not welcome him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem.
And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”54When his disciples James and John observed this rejection, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"
But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.55But he turned and rebuked them,
For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.56and they all went on to another village.
Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”57While they were walking along the road, a man told him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”58Jesus told him, "Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to rest."
Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”59He told another man, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”60But he told him, "Let the dead bury their own dead. But you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”61Still another man said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to those at home."
But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”62Jesus told him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
