Then the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites came near to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the children of Israel.1Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel
And they spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, “The LORD commanded through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for our livestock.”2at Shiloh in Canaan and said to them, "The LORD commanded through Moses that you give us towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock."
So the children of Israel gave to the Levites from their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their common-lands:3So, as the LORD had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance:
Now the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. And the children of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, had thirteen cities by lot from the tribe of Judah, from the tribe of Simeon, and from the tribe of Benjamin.4The first lot came out for the Kohathites, according to their clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.
The rest of the children of Kohath had ten cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh.5The rest of Kohath's descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and half of Manasseh.
And the children of Gershon had thirteen cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.6The descendants of Gershon were allotted thirteen towns from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
The children of Merari according to their families had twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben, from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun.7The descendants of Merari, according to their clans, received twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.
And the children of Israel gave these cities with their common-lands by lot to the Levites, as the LORD had commanded by the hand of Moses.8So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these towns and their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
So they gave from the tribe of the children of Judah and from the tribe of the children of Simeon these cities which are designated by name,9From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they allotted the following towns by name
which were for the children of Aaron, one of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi; for the lot was theirs first.10(these towns were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them):
And they gave them Kirjath Arba (Arba was the father of Anak), which is Hebron, in the mountains of Judah, with the common-land surrounding it.11They gave them Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pastureland, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)
But the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his possession.12But the fields and villages around the city they had given to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
Thus to the children of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Libnah with its common-land,13So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Libnah,
Jattir with its common-land, Eshtemoa with its common-land,14Jattir, Eshtemoa,
Holon with its common-land, Debir with its common-land,15Holon, Debir,
Ain with its common-land, Juttah with its common-land, and Beth Shemesh with its common-land: nine cities from those two tribes;16Ain, Juttah and Beth Shemesh, together with their pasturelands--nine towns from these two tribes.
and from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its common-land, Geba with its common-land,17And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba,
Anathoth with its common-land, and Almon with its common-land: four cities.18Anathoth and Almon, together with their pasturelands--four towns.
All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their common-lands.19The total number of towns for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.
And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites, the rest of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot from the tribe of Ephraim.20The rest of the Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted towns from the tribe of Ephraim:
For they gave them Shechem with its common-land in the mountains of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the slayer), Gezer with its common-land,21In the hill country of Ephraim they were given Shechem (a city of refuge for one accused of murder) and Gezer,
Kibzaim with its common-land, and Beth Horon with its common-land: four cities;22Kibzaim and Beth Horon, together with their pasturelands--four towns.
and from the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with its common-land, Gibbethon with its common-land,23Also from the tribe of Dan they received Eltekeh, Gibbethon,
Aijalon with its common-land, and Gath Rimmon with its common-land: four cities;24Aijalon and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasturelands--four towns.
and from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with its common-land and Gath Rimmon with its common-land: two cities.25From half the tribe of Manasseh they received Taanach and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasturelands--two towns.
All the ten cities with their common-lands were for the rest of the families of the children of Kohath.26All these ten towns and their pasturelands were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
Also to the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, from the other half-tribe of Manasseh, they gave Golan in Bashan with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), and Be Eshterah with its common-land: two cities;27The Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan (a city of refuge for one accused of murder) and Be Eshterah, together with their pasturelands--two towns;
and from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its common-land, Daberath with its common-land,28from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion, Daberath,
Jarmuth with its common-land, and En Gannim with its common-land: four cities;29Jarmuth and En Gannim, together with their pasturelands--four towns;
and from the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its common-land, Abdon with its common-land,30from the tribe of Asher, Mishal, Abdon,
Helkath with its common-land, and Rehob with its common-land: four cities;31Helkath and Rehob, together with their pasturelands--four towns;
and from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Hammoth Dor with its common-land, and Kartan with its common-land: three cities.32from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Hammoth Dor and Kartan, together with their pasturelands--three towns.
All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their common-lands.33The total number of towns of the Gershonite clans came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.
And to the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its common-land, Kartah with its common-land,34The Merarite clans (the rest of the Levites) were given: from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam, Kartah,
Dimnah with its common-land, and Nahalal with its common-land: four cities;35Dimnah and Nahalal, together with their pasturelands--four towns;
and from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with its common-land, Jahaz with its common-land,36from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer, Jahaz,
Kedemoth with its common-land, and Mephaath with its common-land: four cities;37Kedemoth and Mephaath, together with their pasturelands--four towns;
and from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Mahanaim with its common-land,38from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Mahanaim,
Heshbon with its common-land, and Jazer with its common-land: four cities in all.39Heshbon and Jazer, together with their pasturelands--four towns in all.
So all the cities for the children of Merari according to their families, the rest of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities.40The total number of towns allotted to the Merarite clans, who were the rest of the Levites, came to twelve.
All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their common-lands.41The towns of the Levites in the territory held by the Israelites were forty-eight in all, together with their pasturelands.
Every one of these cities had its common-land surrounding it; thus were all these cities.42Each of these towns had pasturelands surrounding it; this was true for all these towns.
So the LORD gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it.43So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there.
The LORD gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.44The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD gave all their enemies into their hands.
Not a word failed of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.45Not one of all the LORD's good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
