“I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener.1Ἐγώ εἰμι ἄμπελος ἀληθινή καὶ Πατήρ μου γεωργός ἐστιν
He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.2πᾶν κλῆμα ἐν ἐμοὶ μὴ φέρον καρπὸν αἴρει αὐτό καὶ πᾶν τὸ καρπὸν φέρον καθαίρει αὐτὸ ἵνα καρπὸν πλείονα φέρῃ
You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you.3ἤδη ὑμεῖς καθαροί ἐστε διὰ τὸν λόγον ὃν λελάληκα ὑμῖν
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.4μείνατε ἐν ἐμοί κἀγὼ ἐν ὑμῖν καθὼς τὸ κλῆμα οὐ δύναται καρπὸν φέρειν ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ ἐὰν μὴ μένῃ ἐν τῇ ἀμπέλῳ οὕτως οὐδὲ ὑμεῖς ἐὰν μὴ ἐν ἐμοὶ μένητε
“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.5Ἐγώ εἰμι ἄμπελος ὑμεῖς τὰ κλήματα μένων ἐν ἐμοὶ κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ οὗτος φέρει καρπὸν πολύν ὅτι χωρὶς ἐμοῦ οὐ δύνασθε ποιεῖν οὐδέν
Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned.6ἐὰν μή τις μένῃ ἐν ἐμοί ἐβλήθη ἔξω ὡς τὸ κλῆμα καὶ ἐξηράνθη καὶ συνάγουσιν αὐτὰ καὶ εἰς τὸ πῦρ βάλλουσιν καὶ καίεται
But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!7ἐὰν μείνητε ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ τὰ ῥήματά μου ἐν ὑμῖν μείνῃ ἐὰν θέλητε αἰτήσασθε καὶ γενήσεται ὑμῖν
When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.8ἐν τούτῳ ἐδοξάσθη Πατήρ μου ἵνα καρπὸν πολὺν φέρητε καὶ γένησθε* ἐμοὶ μαθηταί
“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love.9Καθὼς ἠγάπησέν με Πατήρ κἀγὼ ὑμᾶς ἠγάπησα μείνατε ἐν τῇ ἀγάπῃ τῇ ἐμῇ
When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.10ἐὰν τὰς ἐντολάς μου τηρήσητε μενεῖτε ἐν τῇ ἀγάπῃ μου καθὼς ἐγὼ «τοῦ Πατρός μου» «τὰς ἐντολὰς» τετήρηκα καὶ μένω αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ἀγάπῃ
I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!11Ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα χαρὰ ἐμὴ ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ χαρὰ ὑμῶν πληρωθῇ
This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.12Αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐντολὴ ἐμὴ ἵνα ἀγαπᾶτε ἀλλήλους καθὼς ἠγάπησα ὑμᾶς
There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.13μείζονα ταύτης ἀγάπην οὐδεὶς ἔχει ἵνα τις τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ θῇ ὑπὲρ τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ
You are my friends if you do what I command.14Ὑμεῖς φίλοι μού ἐστε ἐὰν ποιῆτε ἃ* ἐγὼ ἐντέλλομαι ὑμῖν
I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.15οὐκέτι λέγω ὑμᾶς δούλους ὅτι δοῦλος οὐκ οἶδεν τί ποιεῖ αὐτοῦ κύριος ὑμᾶς δὲ εἴρηκα φίλους ὅτι πάντα ἤκουσα παρὰ τοῦ Πατρός μου ἐγνώρισα ὑμῖν
You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.16οὐχ ὑμεῖς με ἐξελέξασθε ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ ἐξελεξάμην ὑμᾶς καὶ ἔθηκα ὑμᾶς ἵνα ὑμεῖς ὑπάγητε καὶ καρπὸν φέρητε καὶ καρπὸς ὑμῶν μένῃ ἵνα ὅ¦τι ἂν αἰτήσητε τὸν Πατέρα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου δῷ ὑμῖν
This is my command: Love each other. The World’s Hatred17ταῦτα ἐντέλλομαι ὑμῖν ἵνα ἀγαπᾶτε ἀλλήλους
“If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.18Εἰ κόσμος ὑμᾶς μισεῖ γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐμὲ πρῶτον ὑμῶν μεμίσηκεν
The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.19εἰ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου ἦτε κόσμος ἂν τὸ ἴδιον ἐφίλει ὅτι δὲ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου οὐκ ἐστέ ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ ἐξελεξάμην ὑμᾶς ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου διὰ τοῦτο μισεῖ ὑμᾶς κόσμος
Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you.20Μνημονεύετε τοῦ λόγου οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον ὑμῖν Οὐκ ἔστιν δοῦλος μείζων τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ εἰ ἐμὲ ἐδίωξαν καὶ ὑμᾶς διώξουσιν εἰ τὸν λόγον μου ἐτήρησαν καὶ τὸν ὑμέτερον τηρήσουσιν
They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the one who sent me.21ἀλλὰ ταῦτα πάντα ποιήσουσιν εἰς ὑμᾶς διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου ὅτι οὐκ οἴδασιν τὸν πέμψαντά με
They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin.22εἰ μὴ ἦλθον καὶ ἐλάλησα αὐτοῖς ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ εἴχοσαν νῦν δὲ πρόφασιν οὐκ ἔχουσιν περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν
Anyone who hates me also hates my Father.23 ἐμὲ μισῶν καὶ τὸν Πατέρα μου μισεῖ
If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father.24εἰ τὰ ἔργα μὴ ἐποίησα ἐν αὐτοῖς οὐδεὶς ἄλλος ἐποίησεν ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ εἴχοσαν νῦν δὲ καὶ ἑωράκασιν καὶ μεμισήκασιν καὶ ἐμὲ καὶ τὸν Πατέρα μου
This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures : ‘They hated me without cause.’25ἀλλ’ ἵνα πληρωθῇ λόγος ἐν τῷ νόμῳ αὐτῶν γεγραμμένος ὅτι Ἐμίσησάν με δωρεάν
“But I will send you the Advocate —the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.26Ὅταν ἔλθῃ Παράκλητος ὃν ἐγὼ πέμψω ὑμῖν παρὰ τοῦ Πατρός τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας παρὰ τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐκπορεύεται ἐκεῖνος μαρτυρήσει περὶ ἐμοῦ
And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry.27καὶ ὑμεῖς δὲ μαρτυρεῖτε ὅτι ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστε
