One day Jesus called together his twelve disciples and gave them power and authority to cast out all demons and to heal all diseases.1After Jesus called the twelve together, he gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,
Then he sent them out to tell everyone about the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.2and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
“Take nothing for your journey,” he instructed them. “Don’t take a walking stick, a traveler’s bag, food, money, or even a change of clothes.3He said to them, "Take nothing for your journey--no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, and do not take an extra tunic.
Wherever you go, stay in the same house until you leave town.4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave the area.
And if a town refuses to welcome you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate.”5Wherever they do not receive you, as you leave that town, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
So they began their circuit of the villages, preaching the Good News and healing the sick. Herod’s Confusion6Then they departed and went throughout the villages, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.
When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything Jesus was doing, he was puzzled. Some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead.7Now Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed, because some people were saying that John had been raised from the dead,
Others thought Jesus was Elijah or one of the other prophets risen from the dead.8while others were saying that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had risen.
“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “so who is this man about whom I hear such stories?” And he kept trying to see him. Jesus Feeds Five Thousand9Herod said, "I had John beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?" So Herod wanted to learn about Jesus.
When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. Then he slipped quietly away with them toward the town of Bethsaida.10When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida.
But the crowds found out where he was going, and they followed him. He welcomed them and taught them about the Kingdom of God, and he healed those who were sick.11But when the crowds found out, they followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and cured those who needed healing.
Late in the afternoon the twelve disciples came to him and said, “Send the crowds away to the nearby villages and farms, so they can find food and lodging for the night. There is nothing to eat here in this remote place.”12Now the day began to draw to a close, so the twelve came and said to Jesus, "Send the crowd away, so they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and food, because we are in an isolated place."
But Jesus said, “You feed them.” “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Or are you expecting us to go and buy enough food for this whole crowd?”13But he said to them, "You give them something to eat." They replied, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish--unless we go and buy food for all these people."
For there were about 5,000 men there. Jesus replied, “Tell them to sit down in groups of about fifty each.”14(Now about five thousand men were there.) Then he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each."
So the people all sat down.15So they did as Jesus directed, and the people all sat down.
Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people.16Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke them. He gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers! Peter’s Declaration about Jesus17They all ate and were satisfied, and what was left over was picked up--twelve baskets of broken pieces.
One day Jesus left the crowds to pray alone. Only his disciples were with him, and he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”18Once when Jesus was praying by himself, and his disciples were nearby, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other ancient prophets risen from the dead.”19They answered, "John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others that one of the prophets of long ago has risen."
Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah sent from God!” Jesus Predicts His Death20Then he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God."
Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone who he was.21But he forcefully commanded them not to tell this to anyone,
“The Son of Man must suffer many terrible things,” he said. “He will be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead.”22saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised."
Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.23Then he said to them all, "If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.
If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?25For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits himself?
If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.26For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God.” The Transfiguration27But I tell you most certainly, there are some standing here who will not experience death before they see the kingdom of God."
About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray.28Now about eight days after these sayings, Jesus took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up the mountain to pray.
And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white.29As he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became very bright, a brilliant white.
Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus.30Then two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with him.
They were glorious to see. And they were speaking about his exodus from this world, which was about to be fulfilled in Jerusalem.31They appeared in glorious splendor and spoke about his departure that he was about to carry out at Jerusalem.
Peter and the others had fallen asleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him.32Now Peter and those with him were quite sleepy, but as they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was saying, blurted out, “Master, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”33Then as the men were starting to leave, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah"--not knowing what he was saying.
But even as he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them, and terror gripped them as the cloud covered them.34As he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.”35Then a voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him!"
When the voice finished, Jesus was there alone. They didn’t tell anyone at that time what they had seen. Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy36After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. So they kept silent and told no one at that time anything of what they had seen.
The next day, after they had come down the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus.37Now on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.
A man in the crowd called out to him, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, my only child.38Then a man from the crowd cried out, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son--he is my only child!
An evil spirit keeps seizing him, making him scream. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It batters him and hardly ever leaves him alone.39A spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions and causes him to foam at the mouth. It hardly ever leaves him alone, torturing him severely.
I begged your disciples to cast out the spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”40I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not do so."
Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you and put up with you?” Then he said to the man, “Bring your son here.”41Jesus answered, "You unbelieving and perverse generation! How much longer must I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here."
As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a violent convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy. Then he gave him back to his father.42As the boy was approaching, the demon threw him to the ground and shook him with convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
Awe gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God’s power. Jesus Again Predicts His Death While everyone was marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples,43Then they were all astonished at the mighty power of God. Another Prediction of Jesus' Suffering But while the entire crowd was amazed at everything Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples,
“Listen to me and remember what I say. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.”44"Take these words to heart, for the Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men."
But they didn’t know what he meant. Its significance was hidden from them, so they couldn’t understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about it. The Greatest in the Kingdom45But they did not understand this statement; its meaning had been concealed from them, so that they could not grasp it. Yet they were afraid to ask him about this statement.
Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the greatest.46Now an argument started among the disciples as to which of them might be the greatest.
But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he brought a little child to his side.47But when Jesus discerned their innermost thoughts, he took a child, had him stand by his side,
Then he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me also welcomes my Father who sent me. Whoever is the least among you is the greatest.” Using the Name of Jesus48and said to them, "Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me, for the one who is least among you all is the one who is great."
John said to Jesus, “Master, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he isn’t in our group.”49John answered, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he is not a disciple along with us."
But Jesus said, “Don’t stop him! Anyone who is not against you is for you.” Opposition from Samaritans50But Jesus said to him, "Do not stop him, for whoever is not against you is for you."
As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.51Now when the days drew near for him to be taken up, Jesus set out resolutely to go to Jerusalem.
He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival.52He sent messengers on ahead of him. As they went along, they entered a Samaritan village to make things ready in advance for him,
But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem.53but the villagers refused to welcome him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem.
When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, “Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up ?”54Now when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to call fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"
But Jesus turned and rebuked them.55But Jesus turned and rebuked them,
So they went on to another village. The Cost of Following Jesus56and they went on to another village.
As they were walking along, someone said to Jesus, “I will follow you wherever you go.”57As they were walking along the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”58Jesus said to him, "Foxes have dens and the birds in the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
He said to another person, “Come, follow me.” The man agreed, but he said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.”59Jesus said to another, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
But Jesus told him, “Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead! Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God.”60But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
Another said, “Yes, Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say good-bye to my family.”61Yet another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to my family."
But Jesus told him, “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”62Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
