1 Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your husbands, so that even if they refuse to believe the word, they will be won over without words by the behavior of their wives Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, Likewise, ye wives, <i>be</i> in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; In the same way, you wives, be subject to your own husbands so that even if any <i>of them</i> are disobedient to the word, they may be won over without a word by the behavior of their wives, Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,
2 when they see your pure and reverent demeanor. when they see your respectful and pure conduct. While they behold your chaste conversation <i>coupled</i> with fear. as they observe your pure and respectful behavior. when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair or gold jewelry or fine clothes, Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— Whose adorning let it not be that outward <i>adorning</i> of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; Your adornment must not be <i>merely</i> the external—braiding the hair, wearing gold <i>jewelry,</i> or putting on apparel; Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.
4 but from the inner disposition of your heart, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight. but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. But <i>let it be</i> the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, <i>even the ornament</i> of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. but <i>it should be</i> the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable <i>quality</i> of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
5 For this is how the holy women of the past adorned themselves. They put their hope in God and were submissive to their husbands, For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: For in this way the holy women of former times, who hoped in God, also used to adorn themselves, being subject to their own husbands, For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands,
6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. And you are her children if you do what is right and refuse to give way to fear. as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord; and you have proved to be her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
7 Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs of the gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with <i>them</i> according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered. You husbands in the same way, live with <i>your wives</i> in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, <i>since she is</i> a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded and sympathetic, love as brothers, be tenderhearted and humble. Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Finally, <i>be ye</i> all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, <i>be</i> pitiful, <i>be</i> courteous: To sum up, all <i>of you</i> be harmonious, sympathetic, loving, compassionate, <i>and</i> humble; Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.
9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you would inherit a blessing. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
10 For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: For, “THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT. For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.
11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. “HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are inclined to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” For the eyes of the Lord <i>are</i> over the righteous, and his ears <i>are open</i> unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord <i>is</i> against them that do evil. “FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST EVILDOERS.” For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
13 Who can harm you if you are zealous for what is good? Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? And who <i>is</i> he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? And who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?
14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear; do not be shaken.” But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy <i>are ye</i>: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE IN DREAD, But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”
15 But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and <i>be</i> ready always to <i>give</i> an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always <i>being</i> ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect; But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who slander you may be put to shame by your good behavior in Christ. having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who disparage your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil. For <i>it is</i> better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. For it is better, if God should will it <i>so,</i> that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit, For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: For Christ also suffered for sins once for all <i>time, the</i> just for <i>the</i> unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
