1 Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is dismantled, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For we know that if our earthly house of <i>this</i> tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For we know that if our earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
2 For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: For indeed, in this <i>tent</i> we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,
3 because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. since in fact after putting it on, we will not be found naked. because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.
4 So while we are in this tent, we groan under our burdens, because we do not wish to be unclothed but clothed, so that our mortality may be swallowed up by life. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. For we that are in <i>this</i> tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. For indeed, we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
5 And God has prepared us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a pledge of what is to come. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing <i>is</i> God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. Now He who prepared us for this very <i>purpose is</i> God, who gave us the Spirit as a pledge. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
6 Therefore we are always confident, although we know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord. So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, Therefore <i>we are</i> always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.
7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. for we walk by faith, not by sight. (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) for we walk by faith, not by sight— For we live by faith, not by sight.
8 We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. We are confident, <i>I say</i>, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. but we are of good courage and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
9 So we aspire to please Him, whether we are here in this body or away from it. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things <i>done</i> in <i>his</i> body, according to that he hath done, whether <i>it be</i> good or bad. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive compensation for his deeds <i>done</i> through the body, in accordance with what he has done, whether good or bad. 11 Therefore, since we know what it means to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is clear to God, and I hope it is clear to your conscience as well. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade people, but we are well known to God; and I hope that we are also well known in your consciences. Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.
12 We are not commending ourselves to you again. Instead, we are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so that you can answer those who take pride in appearances rather than in the heart. We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to <i>answer</i> them which glory in appearance, and not in heart. We are not commending ourselves to you again, but <i>are</i> giving you an opportunity to be proud of us, so that you will have <i>an answer</i> for those who take pride in appearance and not in heart. We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart.
13 If we are out of our mind, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you. For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. For whether we be beside ourselves, <i>it is</i> to God: or whether we be sober, <i>it is</i> for your cause. For if we have lost our minds, <i>it is</i> for God; if we are of sound mind, <i>it is</i> for you. If we are “out of our mind,” as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you.
14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that One died for all, therefore all died. For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.
15 And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died for them and was raised again. and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. And <i>that</i> he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. and He died for all, so that those who live would no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose on their behalf. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
16 So from now on we regard no one according to the flesh. Although we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we <i>him</i> no more. Therefore from now on we recognize no one by the flesh; even though we have known Christ by the flesh, yet now we know <i>Him in this way</i> no longer. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come! Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Therefore if any man <i>be</i> in Christ, <i>he is</i> a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, <i>this person is</i> a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; And all things <i>are</i> of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; Now all <i>these</i> things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:
19 that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s trespasses against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their wrongdoings against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
20 Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: Be reconciled to God. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech <i>you</i> by us: we pray <i>you</i> in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
21 God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. For he hath made him <i>to be</i> sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. He made Him who knew no sin <i>to be</i> sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
