1 A Maskil of Asaph. Why have You rejected us forever, O God? Why does Your anger smolder against the sheep of Your pasture? O God, why do you cast us off forever? Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture? Maschil of Asaph. O God, why hast thou cast <i>us</i> off for ever? <i>why</i> doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture? 2 Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as the tribe of Your inheritance— Mount Zion where You dwell. Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage! Remember Mount Zion, where you have dwelt. Remember thy congregation, <i>which</i> thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, <i>which</i> thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt. Remember Your congregation, <i>which</i> You purchased of old, <i>Which</i> You have redeemed to be the tribe of Your inheritance; <i>And</i> this Mount Zion, where You have dwelt. Remember the nation you purchased long ago, the people of your inheritance, whom you redeemed— Mount Zion, where you dwelt.
3 Turn Your steps to the everlasting ruins, to everything in the sanctuary the enemy has destroyed. Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins; the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary! Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; <i>even</i> all <i>that</i> the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary. Step toward the irreparable ruins; The enemy has damaged everything in the sanctuary. Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins, all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.
4 Your foes have roared within Your meeting place; they have unfurled their banners as signs, Your foes have roared in the midst of your meeting place; they set up their own signs for signs. Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns <i>for</i> signs. Your adversaries have roared in the midst of Your meeting place; They have set up their own signs as signs. Your foes roared in the place where you met with us; they set up their standards as signs.
5 like men wielding axes in a thicket of trees They were like those who swing axes in a forest of trees. <i>A man</i> was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees. It seems like one bringing up <i>His</i> axe into a forest of trees. They behaved like men wielding axes to cut through a thicket of trees.
6 and smashing all the carvings with hatchets and picks. And all its carved wood they broke down with hatchets and hammers. But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers. And now they break down all its carved work With axe and hammers. They smashed all the carved paneling with their axes and hatchets.
7 They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground; they have defiled the dwelling place of Your Name. They set your sanctuary on fire; they profaned the dwelling place of your name, bringing it down to the ground. They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled <i>by casting down</i> the dwelling place of thy name to the ground. They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground; They have defiled the dwelling place of Your name. They burned your sanctuary to the ground; they defiled the dwelling place of your Name.
8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely.” They burned down every place where God met us in the land. They said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”; they burned all the meeting places of God in the land. They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land. They said in their heart, “Let’s completely subdue them.” They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land. They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely!” They burned every place where God was worshiped in the land.
9 There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer any prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last. We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long. We see not our signs: <i>there is</i> no more any prophet: neither <i>is there</i> among us any that knoweth how long. We do not see our signs; There is no longer any prophet, Nor is there <i>anyone</i> among us who knows how long. We are given no signs from God; no prophets are left, and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long, O God, will the enemy taunt You? Will the foe revile Your name forever? How long, O God, is the foe to scoff? Is the enemy to revile your name forever? O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever? How long, God, will the enemy taunt <i>You?</i> Shall the enemy treat Your name disrespectfully forever? How long will the enemy mock you, God? Will the foe revile your name forever?
11 Why do You withdraw Your strong right hand? Stretch it out to destroy them! Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them! Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck <i>it</i> out of thy bosom. Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand? <i>Extend it</i> from Your chest <i>and</i> destroy <i>them!</i> Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them!
12 Yet God is my King from ancient times, working salvation on the earth. Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. For God <i>is</i> my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. Yet God is my King from long ago, Who performs acts of salvation in the midst of the earth. But God is my King from long ago; he brings salvation on the earth.
13 You divided the sea by Your strength; You smashed the heads of the dragons of the sea; You divided the sea by your might; you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters. Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters. You divided the sea by Your strength; You broke the heads of the sea monsters in the waters. It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters.
14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You fed him to the creatures of the desert. You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, <i>and</i> gavest him <i>to be</i> meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness. You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.
15 You broke open the fountain and the flood; You dried up the ever-flowing rivers. You split open springs and brooks; you dried up ever-flowing streams. Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers. You broke open springs and torrents; You dried up ever-flowing streams. It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is Yours, and also the night; You established the moon and the sun. Yours is the day, yours also the night; you have established the heavenly lights and the sun. The day <i>is</i> thine, the night also <i>is</i> thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun. Yours is the day, Yours also is the night; You have prepared the light and the sun. The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon.
17 You set all the boundaries of the earth; You made the summer and winter. You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter. Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter. You have established all the boundaries of the earth; You have created summer and winter. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.
18 Remember how the enemy has mocked You, O LORD, how a foolish people has spurned Your name. Remember this, O LORD, how the enemy scoffs, and a foolish people reviles your name. Remember this, <i>that</i> the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and <i>that</i> the foolish people have blasphemed thy name. Remember this, LORD, that the enemy has taunted <i>You,</i> And a foolish people has treated Your name disrespectfully. Remember how the enemy has mocked you, LORD, how foolish people have reviled your name.
19 Do not deliver the soul of Your dove to beasts; do not forget the lives of Your afflicted forever. Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild beasts; do not forget the life of your poor forever. O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude <i>of the wicked</i>: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever. Do not give the soul of Your turtledove to the wild animal; Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever. Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever.
20 Consider Your covenant, for haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land. Have regard for the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence. Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty. Consider the covenant; For the dark places of the land are full of the places of violence. Have regard for your covenant, because haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed retreat in shame; may the poor and needy praise Your name. Let not the downtrodden turn back in shame; let the poor and needy praise your name. O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name. May the oppressed person not return dishonored; May the afflicted and the needy praise Your name. Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace; may the poor and needy praise your name.
22 Rise up, O God; defend Your cause! Remember how the fool mocks You all day long. Arise, O God, defend your cause; remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day! Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily. Arise, God, <i>and</i> plead Your own cause; Remember how the foolish person taunts You all day long. Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; remember how fools mock you all day long.
23 Do not disregard the clamor of Your adversaries, the uproar of Your enemies that ascends continually. Do not forget the clamor of your foes, the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually! Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually. Do not forget the voice of Your adversaries, The uproar of those who rise against You, which ascends continually. Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries, the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually.
