Jacob Meets Esau

1  וַיִּשָּׂ֨א (And lifted up) יַעֲקֹ֜ב (Jacob) עֵינָ֗יו (his eyes) וַיַּרְא֙ (and he saw), וְהִנֵּ֣ה (and behold) עֵשָׂ֣ו (Esau) בָּ֔א (was coming), וְעִמּ֕וֹ (and with him) אַרְבַּ֥ע (four) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) אִ֑ישׁ (men). וַיַּ֣חַץ (And he divided) אֶת־ (-) הַיְלָדִ֗ים (the children) עַל־ (to) לֵאָה֙ (Leah) וְעַל־ (and to) רָחֵ֔ל (Rachel) וְעַ֖ל (and to) שְׁתֵּ֥י (two) הַשְּׁפָחֽוֹת׃ (the maidservants). 2  וַיָּ֧שֶׂם (And he put) אֶת־ (-) הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת (the maidservants) וְאֶת־ (and) יַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן (their children) רִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה (first), וְאֶת־ (and) לֵאָ֤ה (Leah) וִֽילָדֶ֙יהָ֙ (and her children) אַחֲרֹנִ֔ים (behind them), וְאֶת־ (and) רָחֵ֥ל (Rachel) וְאֶת־ (and) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) אַחֲרֹנִֽים׃ (behind them). 3  וְה֖וּא (And he himself) עָבַ֣ר (passed over) לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם (before them) וַיִּשְׁתַּ֤חוּ (and he bowed himself) אַ֙רְצָה֙ (to the earth) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) פְּעָמִ֔ים (times), עַד־ (until) גִּשְׁתּ֖וֹ (he came near) עַד־ (to) אָחִֽיו׃ (his brother).

4  וַיָּ֨רָץ (And ran) עֵשָׂ֤ו (Esau) לִקְרָאתוֹ֙ (to meet him), וַֽיְחַבְּקֵ֔הוּ (and embraced him) וַיִּפֹּ֥ל (and he fell) עַל־ (on) צַוָּארָ֖ו (his neck) וַׄיִּׄשָּׁׄקֵ֑ׄהׄוּׄ (and kissed him). וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃ (And they wept).

5  וַיִּשָּׂ֣א (And he lifted up) אֶת־ (-) עֵינָ֗יו (his eyes) וַיַּ֤רְא (and he saw) אֶת־ (-) הַנָּשִׁים֙ (the women) וְאֶת־ (and) הַיְלָדִ֔ים (the children), וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and he said), מִי־ (Who are) אֵ֣לֶּה (these) לָּ֑ךְ (with you)?

וַיֹּאמַ֕ר (And he said), הַיְלָדִ֕ים (The children) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) חָנַ֥ן (has graciously given) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) אֶת־ (-) עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ (your servant). 6  וַתִּגַּ֧שְׁןָ (And came near) הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת (the maidservants), הֵ֥נָּה (they) וְיַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן (and their children), וַתִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶֽיןָ׃ (and they bowed themselves). 7  וַתִּגַּ֧שׁ (And came near) גַּם־ (also) לֵאָ֛ה (Leah) וִילָדֶ֖יהָ (and her children), וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֑וּ (and they bowed themselves); וְאַחַ֗ר (and afterward) נִגַּ֥שׁ (came near) יוֹסֵ֛ף (Joseph) וְרָחֵ֖ל (and Rachel), וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֽוּ׃ (and they bowed themselves).

8  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), מִ֥י (What) לְךָ֛ (to you) כָּל־ (is all) הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה (the camp) הַזֶּ֖ה (this), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) פָּגָ֑שְׁתִּי (I have met)?

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), לִמְצֹא־ (To find) חֵ֖ן (favor) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) אֲדֹנִֽי׃ (of my lord).

9  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) עֵשָׂ֖ו (Esau), יֶשׁ־ (Have) לִ֣י (I) רָ֑ב (much), אָחִ֕י (my brother). יְהִ֥י (Let it be) לְךָ֖ (to you) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) לָֽךְ׃ (is yours).

10  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (Jacob), אַל־ (No), נָא֙ (please), אִם־ (if) נָ֨א (now) מָצָ֤אתִי (I have found) חֵן֙ (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ (in your eyes), וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ (then you shall take) מִנְחָתִ֖י (my gift) מִיָּדִ֑י (from my hand), כִּ֣י (for) עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֞ן (thus) רָאִ֣יתִי (I have seen) פָנֶ֗יךָ (your face) כִּרְאֹ֛ת (which is like seeing) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God), וַתִּרְצֵֽנִי׃ (and you have received me favorably). 11  קַח־ (Take) נָ֤א (please) אֶת־ (-) בִּרְכָתִי֙ (my blessing) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הֻבָ֣את (is brought) לָ֔ךְ (to you), כִּֽי־ (because) חַנַּ֥נִי (has been gracious to me) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God), וְכִ֣י (and because) יֶשׁ־ (have) לִי־ (I) כֹ֑ל (all). וַיִּפְצַר־ (And he urged) בּ֖וֹ (him), וַיִּקָּֽח׃ (and he took it).

12  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), נִסְעָ֣ה (Let us journey), וְנֵלֵ֑כָה (and go on), וְאֵלְכָ֖ה (and I will go) לְנֶגְדֶּֽךָ׃ (before you).

13  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלָ֗יו (to him), אֲדֹנִ֤י (My lord) יֹדֵ֙עַ֙ (knows) כִּֽי־ (that) הַיְלָדִ֣ים (the children) רַכִּ֔ים (are tender), וְהַצֹּ֥אן (and the flock) וְהַבָּקָ֖ר (and the cattle) עָל֣וֹת (are nursing) עָלָ֑י (with me), וּדְפָקוּם֙ (and if they are driven hard) י֣וֹם (day) אֶחָ֔ד (one), וָמֵ֖תוּ (then will die) כָּל־ (all) הַצֹּֽאן׃ (the flock). 14  יַעֲבָר־ (Let go on) נָ֥א (please), אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord), לִפְנֵ֣י (before) עַבְדּ֑וֹ (his servant), וַאֲנִ֞י (and I) אֶֽתְנָהֲלָ֣ה (will lead) לְאִטִּ֗י (on gently) לְרֶ֨גֶל (at a pace) הַמְּלָאכָ֤ה (of the work) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) לְפָנַי֙ (is before me) וּלְרֶ֣גֶל (and according to the pace), הַיְלָדִ֔ים (of the children), עַ֛ד (until) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אָבֹ֥א (I come) אֶל־ (to) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord) שֵׂעִֽירָה׃ (in Seir).

15  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) עֵשָׂ֔ו (Esau), אַצִּֽיגָה־ (Let me leave) נָּ֣א (now) עִמְּךָ֔ (with you) מִן־ (some) הָעָ֖ם (of the people) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who are) אִתִּ֑י (with me).

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said), לָ֣מָּה (Why) זֶּ֔ה (this)? אֶמְצָא־ (Let me find) חֵ֖ן (favor) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) אֲדֹנִֽי׃ (of my lord).

16  וַיָּשָׁב֩ (And turned back) בַּיּ֨וֹם (day) הַה֥וּא (that) עֵשָׂ֛ו (Esau) לְדַרְכּ֖וֹ (on his way) שֵׂעִֽירָה׃ (to Seir). 17  וְיַעֲקֹב֙ (And Jacob) נָסַ֣ע (journeyed) סֻכֹּ֔תָה (to Succoth) וַיִּ֥בֶן (and built) ל֖וֹ (for himself) בָּ֑יִת (a house), וּלְמִקְנֵ֙הוּ֙ (and for his livestock) עָשָׂ֣ה (made) סֻכֹּ֔ת (booths). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֛ן (thus) קָרָ֥א (he called) שֵׁם־ (the name) הַמָּק֖וֹם (of the place) סֻכּֽוֹת׃ס (Succoth).

Jacob Settles in Shechem

18  וַיָּבֹא֩ (And came) יַעֲקֹ֨ב (Jacob) שָׁלֵ֜ם (safely) עִ֣יר (to the city) שְׁכֶ֗ם (of Shechem), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which is) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan), בְּבֹא֖וֹ (when he came) מִפַּדַּ֣ן (from Paddan-) אֲרָ֑ם (aram). וַיִּ֖חַן (And he pitched his tent) אֶת־ (-) פְּנֵ֥י (before) הָעִֽיר׃ (the city). 19  וַיִּ֜קֶן (And he bought) אֶת־ (-) חֶלְקַ֣ת (the portion) הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה (of the field) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (where) נָֽטָה־ (he had pitched) שָׁם֙ (-) אָהֳל֔וֹ (his tent) מִיַּ֥ד (from the hand) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) חֲמ֖וֹר (of Hamor), אֲבִ֣י (father) שְׁכֶ֑ם (of Shechem), בְּמֵאָ֖ה (for a hundred) קְשִׂיטָֽה׃ (kesitah). 20  וַיַּצֶּב־ (And he erected) שָׁ֖ם (there) מִזְבֵּ֑חַ (an altar) וַיִּ֨קְרָא־ (and he called) ל֔וֹ (it) אֵ֖ל (El) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (Elohe) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (Israel).
