The Defiling of Dinah

1  וַתֵּצֵ֤א (And went out) דִינָה֙ (Dinah) בַּת־ (the daughter) לֵאָ֔ה (of Leah), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) יָלְדָ֖ה (she had borne) לְיַעֲקֹ֑ב (to Jacob), לִרְא֖וֹת (to see) בִּבְנ֥וֹת (the daughters) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land). 2  וַיַּ֨רְא (And saw) אֹתָ֜הּ (her) שְׁכֶ֧ם (Shechem) בֶּן־ (son) חֲמ֛וֹר (of Hamor) הַֽחִוִּ֖י (the Hivite), נְשִׂ֣יא (prince) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land), וַיִּקַּ֥ח (and he took) אֹתָ֛הּ (her) וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב (and lay with) אֹתָ֖הּ (her) וַיְעַנֶּֽהָ׃ (and violated her). 3  וַתִּדְבַּ֣ק (And clung) נַפְשׁ֔וֹ (his soul) בְּדִינָ֖ה (to Dinah) בַּֽת־ (the daughter) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (of Jacob), וַיֶּֽאֱהַב֙ (and he loved) אֶת־ (-) הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ (the young woman) וַיְדַבֵּ֖ר (and spoke) עַל־ (to) לֵ֥ב (the heart) הַֽנַּעֲרָֽ׃ (of the young woman). 4  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And spoke) שְׁכֶ֔ם (Shechem) אֶל־ (to) חֲמ֥וֹר (Hamor) אָבִ֖יו (his father), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying) קַֽח־ (Get) לִ֛י (for me) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּלְדָּ֥ה (the young woman) הַזֹּ֖את (this) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (for a wife).

5  וְיַעֲקֹ֣ב (And Jacob) שָׁמַ֗ע (heard) כִּ֤י (that) טִמֵּא֙ (he had defiled) אֶת־ (-) דִּינָ֣ה (Dinah) בִתּ֔וֹ (his daughter), וּבָנָ֛יו (and his sons) הָי֥וּ (were) אֶת־ (with) מִקְנֵ֖הוּ (his livestock) בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה (in the field). וְהֶחֱרִ֥שׁ (And was silent) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) עַד־ (until) בֹּאָֽם׃ (they came in). 6  וַיֵּצֵ֛א (And went out) חֲמ֥וֹר (Hamor) אֲבִֽי־ (the father) שְׁכֶ֖ם (of Shechem) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob) לְדַבֵּ֖ר (to speak) אִתּֽוֹ׃ (with him). 7  וּבְנֵ֨י (And the sons) יַעֲקֹ֜ב (of Jacob) בָּ֤אוּ (came in) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (the field) כְּשָׁמְעָ֔ם (when they heard). וַיִּֽתְעַצְּבוּ֙ (And were grieved) הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים (the men), וַיִּ֥חַר (and it burned) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) מְאֹ֑ד (exceedingly), כִּֽי־ (because) נְבָלָ֞ה (an outrage) עָשָׂ֣ה (he has done) בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (in Israel) לִשְׁכַּב֙ (to lie) אֶת־ (with) בַּֽת־ (the daughter) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob), וְכֵ֖ן (and such) לֹ֥א (not) יֵעָשֶֽׂה׃ (ought to be done).

8  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) חֲמ֖וֹר (Hamor) אִתָּ֣ם (with them), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), שְׁכֶ֣ם (Shechem) בְּנִ֗י (my son) חָֽשְׁקָ֤ה (longs) נַפְשׁוֹ֙ (his soul) בְּבִתְּכֶ֔ם (for your⁺ daughter); תְּנ֨וּ (give) נָ֥א (please) אֹתָ֛הּ (her) ל֖וֹ (to him) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (for a wife). 9  וְהִֽתְחַתְּנ֖וּ (And make marriages) אֹתָ֑נוּ (with us); בְּנֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ daughters) תִּתְּנוּ־ (you⁺ shall give) לָ֔נוּ (to us), וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנֹתֵ֖ינוּ (our daughters) תִּקְח֥וּ (you⁺ shall take) לָכֶֽם׃ (for yourselves). 10  וְאִתָּ֖נוּ (And with us) תֵּשֵׁ֑בוּ (you⁺ shall dwell), וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (and the land) תִּהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם (before you⁺). שְׁבוּ֙ (Dwell) וּסְחָר֔וּהָ (and trade in it), וְהֵֽאָחֲז֖וּ (and acquire possessions for yourselves) בָּֽהּ׃ (in it).

11  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) שְׁכֶם֙ (Shechem) אֶל־ (to) אָבִ֣יה (her father) וְאֶל־ (and to) אַחֶ֔יהָ (her brothers), אֶמְצָא־ (Let me find) חֵ֖ן (favor) בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ eyes), וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and whatever) תֹּאמְר֛וּ (you⁺ say) אֵלַ֖י (to me), אֶתֵּֽן׃ (I will give). 12  הַרְבּ֨וּ (Increase) עָלַ֤י (on me) מְאֹד֙ (very much) מֹ֣הַר (dowry) וּמַתָּ֔ן (and gift), וְאֶ֨תְּנָ֔ה (and I will give) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (according to what) תֹּאמְר֖וּ (you⁺ say) אֵלָ֑י (to me); וּתְנוּ־ (and give) לִ֥י (to me) אֶת־ (-) הַֽנַּעֲרָ֖ (the young woman) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (as a wife).

The Revenge of Dinah’s Brothers

13  וַיַּעֲנ֨וּ (And answered) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יַעֲקֹ֜ב (of Jacob) אֶת־ (-) שְׁכֶ֨ם (Shechem) וְאֶת־ (and) חֲמ֥וֹר (Hamor) אָבִ֛יו (his father) בְּמִרְמָ֖ה (with deceit), וַיְדַבֵּ֑רוּ (and they spoke), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (because) טִמֵּ֔א (he had defiled) אֵ֖ת (-) דִּינָ֥ה (Dinah) אֲחֹתָֽם׃ (their sister). 14  וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they said) אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (to them), לֹ֤א (Not) נוּכַל֙ (we are able) לַעֲשׂוֹת֙ (to do) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), לָתֵת֙ (to give) אֶת־ (-) אֲחֹתֵ֔נוּ (our sister) לְאִ֖ישׁ (to a man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) ל֣וֹ (has) עָרְלָ֑ה (a foreskin); כִּֽי־ (for) חֶרְפָּ֥ה (a reproach) הִ֖וא (that is) לָֽנוּ׃ (to us). 15  אַךְ־ (Only) בְּזֹ֖את (on this condition) נֵא֣וֹת (we will consent) לָכֶ֑ם (to you⁺), אִ֚ם (if) תִּהְי֣וּ (you⁺ will become) כָמֹ֔נוּ (as we are)— לְהִמֹּ֥ל (be circumcised) לָכֶ֖ם (among you⁺) כָּל־ (every) זָכָֽר׃ (male). 16  וְנָתַ֤נּוּ (And we will give) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙ (our daughters) לָכֶ֔ם (to you⁺), וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ daughters) נִֽקַּֽח־ (we will take) לָ֑נוּ (for us). וְיָשַׁ֣בְנוּ (And we will dwell) אִתְּכֶ֔ם (with you⁺) וְהָיִ֖ינוּ (and we will become) לְעַ֥ם (people) אֶחָֽד׃ (one). 17  וְאִם־ (But if) לֹ֧א (not) תִשְׁמְע֛וּ (you⁺ will listen) אֵלֵ֖ינוּ (to us) לְהִמּ֑וֹל (to be circumcised), וְלָקַ֥חְנוּ (then we will take) אֶת־ (-) בִּתֵּ֖נוּ (our daughter), וְהָלָֽכְנוּ׃ (and we will go).

18  וַיִּֽיטְב֥וּ (And were good) דִבְרֵיהֶ֖ם (their words) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) חֲמ֑וֹר (of Hamor) וּבְעֵינֵ֖י (and) שְׁכֶ֥ם (Shechem) בֶּן־ (son) חֲמֽוֹר׃ (of Hamor). 19  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) אֵחַ֤ר (did delay) הַנַּ֙עַר֙ (the young man) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to do) הַדָּבָ֔ר (the thing), כִּ֥י (because) חָפֵ֖ץ (he delighted in) בְּבַֽת־ (in the daughter) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (of Jacob). וְה֣וּא (And He was) נִכְבָּ֔ד (more honorable) מִכֹּ֖ל (than all) בֵּ֥ית (the house) אָבִֽיו׃ (of his father).

20  וַיָּבֹ֥א (And came) חֲמ֛וֹר (Hamor) וּשְׁכֶ֥ם (and Shechem) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) אֶל־ (to) שַׁ֣עַר (the gate) עִירָ֑ם (of their city) וַֽיְדַבְּר֛וּ (and spoke) אֶל־ (to) אַנְשֵׁ֥י (the men) עִירָ֖ם (of their city), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 21  הָאֲנָשִׁ֨ים (The men) הָאֵ֜לֶּה (these) שְֽׁלֵמִ֧ים (at peace) הֵ֣ם (they are) אִתָּ֗נוּ (with us); וְיֵשְׁב֤וּ (so let them dwell) בָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (in the land) וְיִסְחֲר֣וּ (and trade) אֹתָ֔הּ (in it), וְהָאָ֛רֶץ (and for the land is) הִנֵּ֥ה (behold) רַֽחֲבַת־ (broad) יָדַ֖יִם (of hands). לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם (Before them) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֹתָם֙ (their daughters) נִקַּֽח־ (let us take) לָ֣נוּ (to us) לְנָשִׁ֔ים (for wives), וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנֹתֵ֖ינוּ (our daughters) נִתֵּ֥ן (let us give) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them). 22  אַךְ־ (Only) בְּ֠זֹאת (on this condition) יֵאֹ֨תוּ (will consent) לָ֤נוּ (to us) הָאֲנָשִׁים֙ (the men) לָשֶׁ֣בֶת (to dwell) אִתָּ֔נוּ (with us) לִהְי֖וֹת (to be) לְעַ֣ם (people) אֶחָ֑ד (one): בְּהִמּ֥וֹל (Be circumcised) לָ֙נוּ֙ (among us) כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֔ר (male), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) הֵ֥ם (they) נִמֹּלִֽים׃ (are circumcised). 23  מִקְנֵהֶ֤ם (Their livestock) וְקִנְיָנָם֙ (and their property) וְכָל־ (and every) בְּהֶמְתָּ֔ם (animal of theirs), הֲל֥וֹא (not) לָ֖נוּ (be ours) הֵ֑ם (will they)? אַ֚ךְ (Only) נֵא֣וֹתָה (let us consent) לָהֶ֔ם (to them), וְיֵשְׁב֖וּ (and they will dwell) אִתָּֽנוּ׃ (with us). 24  וַיִּשְׁמְע֤וּ (And listened) אֶל־ (to) חֲמוֹר֙ (Hamor) וְאֶל־ (and to) שְׁכֶ֣ם (Shechem)

בְּנ֔וֹ (his son) כָּל־ (all) יֹצְאֵ֖י (who went out) שַׁ֣עַר (of the gate) עִיר֑וֹ (of his city). וַיִּמֹּ֙לוּ֙ (And was circumcised) כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֔ר (male), כָּל־ (all) יֹצְאֵ֖י (who went out) שַׁ֥עַר (of the gate) עִירֽוֹ׃ (of his city).

25  וַיְהִי֩ (And it came to pass) בַיּ֨וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֜י (third), בִּֽהְיוֹתָ֣ם (when they were) כֹּֽאֲבִ֗ים (in pain), וַיִּקְח֣וּ (that took) שְׁנֵֽי־ (two) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) יַ֠עֲקֹב (of Jacob) שִׁמְע֨וֹן (Simeon) וְלֵוִ֜י (and Levi), אֲחֵ֤י (brothers) דִינָה֙ (of Dinah)) אִ֣ישׁ (each) חַרְבּ֔וֹ (his sword), וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ (and they came) עַל־ (upon) הָעִ֖יר (the city) בֶּ֑טַח (boldly) וַיַּֽהַרְג֖וּ (and they killed) כָּל־ (every) זָכָֽר׃ (male). 26  וְאֶת־ (And) חֲמוֹר֙ (Hamor) וְאֶת־ (and) שְׁכֶ֣ם (Shechem) בְּנ֔וֹ (his son) הָרְג֖וּ (they killed) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חָ֑רֶב (of the sword), וַיִּקְח֧וּ (and they took) אֶת־ (-) דִּינָ֛ה (Dinah) מִבֵּ֥ית (from the house) שְׁכֶ֖ם (of Shechem) וַיֵּצֵֽאוּ׃ (and they went out).

27  בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (of Jacob) בָּ֚אוּ (came) עַל־ (upon) הַ֣חֲלָלִ֔ים (the slain), וַיָּבֹ֖זּוּ (and they plundered) הָעִ֑יר (the city), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (because) טִמְּא֖וּ (they had defiled) אֲחוֹתָֽם׃ (their sister). 28  אֶת־ (-) צֹאנָ֥ם (Their flock), וְאֶת־ (and) בְּקָרָ֖ם (their cattle), וְאֶת־ (and) חֲמֹרֵיהֶּ֑ם (their donkeys), וְאֵ֧ת (and) אֲשֶׁר־ (what was) בָּעִ֛יר (in the city), וְאֶת־ (and) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (what was) בַּשָּׂדֶ֖ה (in the field) לָקָֽחוּ׃ (they took). 29  וְאֶת־ (And) כָּל־ (all) חֵילָ֤ם (their wealth), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) טַפָּם֙ (their little ones), וְאֶת־ (and) נְשֵׁיהֶ֔ם (their women) שָׁב֖וּ (they took captive), וַיָּבֹ֑זּוּ (and they plundered) וְאֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that was) בַּבָּֽיִת׃ (in the house).

30  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יַעֲקֹ֜ב (Jacob) אֶל־ (to) שִׁמְע֣וֹן (Simeon) וְאֶל־ (and to) לֵוִי֮ (Levi), עֲכַרְתֶּ֣ם (You⁺ have troubled) אֹתִי֒ (me) לְהַבְאִישֵׁ֙נִי֙ (to make me stink) בְּיֹשֵׁ֣ב (among those dwelling) הָאָ֔רֶץ (in the land) בַּֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י (among the Canaanite) וּבַפְּרִזִּ֑י (and among the Perizzite). וַאֲנִי֙ (And I am) מְתֵ֣י (few) מִסְפָּ֔ר (in number), וְנֶאֶסְפ֤וּ (and they will gather themselves) עָלַי֙ (against me) וְהִכּ֔וּנִי (and strike me), וְנִשְׁמַדְתִּ֖י (then I shall be destroyed)— אֲנִ֥י (I) וּבֵיתִֽי׃ (and my house).

31  וַיֹּאמְר֑וּ (And they said), הַכְזוֹנָ֕ה (Like a prostitute) יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה (shall he make) אֶת־ (-) אֲחוֹתֵֽנוּ׃פ (our sister)?
