Jacob Returns to Bethel

1  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob), ק֛וּם (Arise), עֲלֵ֥ה (go up) בֵֽית־ (to Beth-) אֵ֖ל (el), וְשֶׁב־ (and dwell) שָׁ֑ם (there), וַעֲשֵׂה־ (and make) שָׁ֣ם (there) מִזְבֵּ֔חַ (an altar) לָאֵל֙ (to God), הַנִּרְאֶ֣ה (who appeared) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you) בְּבָרְחֲךָ֔ (when you fled) מִפְּנֵ֖י (from the face) עֵשָׂ֥ו (of Esau) אָחִֽיךָ׃ (your brother).

2  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob) אֶל־ (to) בֵּית֔וֹ (his house), וְאֶ֖ל (and to) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) עִמּ֑וֹ (with him), הָסִ֜רוּ (Remove) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (gods) הַנֵּכָר֙ (the foreign) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that are) בְּתֹכְכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ midst), וְהִֽטַּהֲר֔וּ (and purify yourselves), וְהַחֲלִ֖יפוּ (and change) שִׂמְלֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ garments). 3  וְנָק֥וּמָה (And let us arise) וְנַעֲלֶ֖ה (and go up to) בֵּֽית־ (Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el), וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ (and I will make) שָּׁ֣ם (there) מִזְבֵּ֗חַ (an altar) לָאֵ֞ל (to God), הָעֹנֶ֤ה (who answered) אֹתִי֙ (me) בְּי֣וֹם (in the day) צָֽרָתִ֔י (of my distress) וַיְהִי֙ (and has been) עִמָּדִ֔י (with me) בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ (in the way) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הָלָֽכְתִּי׃ (I have gone).

4  וַיִּתְּנ֣וּ (And they gave) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (Jacob) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (gods) הַנֵּכָר֙ (the foreign) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that were) בְּיָדָ֔ם (in their hands), וְאֶת־ (and) הַנְּזָמִ֖ים (the rings) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that were) בְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑ם (in their ears). וַיִּטְמֹ֤ן (And hid) אֹתָם֙ (them) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob) תַּ֥חַת (under) הָאֵלָ֖ה (the oak) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that was) עִם־ (by) שְׁכֶֽם׃ (Shechem).

5  וַיִּסָּ֑עוּ (And they journeyed), וַיְהִ֣י׀ (and was) חִתַּ֣ת (the terror) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (of God) עַל־ (upon) הֶֽעָרִים֙ (the cities) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that were) סְבִיבֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם (all around them), וְלֹ֣א (and not) רָֽדְפ֔וּ (they did pursue) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (of Jacob). 6  וַיָּבֹ֨א (And came) יַעֲקֹ֜ב (Jacob) ל֗וּזָה (to Luz), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which is) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan), הִ֖וא (that is) בֵּֽית־ (Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el)— ה֖וּא (he) וְכָל־ (and all) הָעָ֥ם (the people) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) עִמּֽוֹ׃ (with him). 7  וַיִּ֤בֶן (And he built) שָׁם֙ (there) מִזְבֵּ֔חַ (an altar) וַיִּקְרָא֙ (and called) לַמָּק֔וֹם (the place) אֵ֖ל (El-) בֵּֽית־ (Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el), כִּ֣י (because) שָׁ֗ם (there) נִגְל֤וּ (had revealed himself) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) בְּבָרְח֖וֹ (when he fled) מִפְּנֵ֥י (from the face) אָחִֽיו׃ (of his brother).

8  וַתָּ֤מָת (And died) דְּבֹרָה֙ (Deborah), מֵינֶ֣קֶת (nurse) רִבְקָ֔ה (of Rebekah), וַתִּקָּבֵ֛ר (and she was buried) מִתַּ֥חַת (below) לְבֵֽית־ (Beth-) אֵ֖ל (el) תַּ֣חַת (under) הָֽאַלּ֑וֹן (the oak); וַיִּקְרָ֥א (and he called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (its name) אַלּ֥וֹן (Allon-) בָּכֽוּת׃פ (bachuth).

9  וַיֵּרָ֨א (And appeared) אֱלֹהִ֤ים (God) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob) ע֔וֹד (again), בְּבֹא֖וֹ (when he came) מִפַּדַּ֣ן (from Paddan-) אֲרָ֑ם (aram), וַיְבָ֖רֶךְ (and He blessed) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (him). 10  וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ (And said) ל֥וֹ (to him) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God), שִׁמְךָ֣ (Your name is) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob); לֹֽא־ (not) יִקָּרֵא֩ (shall be called) שִׁמְךָ֙ (your name) ע֜וֹד (longer) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (Jacob), כִּ֤י (but) אִם־ (rather) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) יִהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) שְׁמֶ֔ךָ (your name). וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And He called) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

11  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) ל֨וֹ (to him) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (God), אֲנִ֨י (I am) אֵ֤ל (El-) שַׁדַּי֙ (Shaddai). פְּרֵ֣ה (Be fruitful) וּרְבֵ֔ה (and multiply). גּ֛וֹי (A nation) וּקְהַ֥ל (and an assembly) גּוֹיִ֖ם (of nations) יִהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) מִמֶּ֑ךָּ (from you), וּמְלָכִ֖ים (and kings) מֵחֲלָצֶ֥יךָ (from your loins) יֵצֵֽאוּ׃ (will come). 12  וְאֶת־ (And) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָתַ֛תִּי (I gave) לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם (to Abraham) וּלְיִצְחָ֖ק (and to Isaac), לְךָ֣ (to you) אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה (I give), וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֥ (and to your seed) אַחֲרֶ֖יךָ (after you) אֶתֵּ֥ן (I will give) אֶת־ (-) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land).

13  וַיַּ֥עַל (And went up) מֵעָלָ֖יו (from him) אֱלֹהִ֑ים (God) בַּמָּק֖וֹם (in the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) דִּבֶּ֥ר (He had spoken) אִתּֽוֹ׃ (with him).

14  וַיַּצֵּ֨ב (And set up) יַעֲקֹ֜ב (Jacob) מַצֵּבָ֗ה (a pillar) בַּמָּק֛וֹם (in the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) דִּבֶּ֥ר (He had spoken) אִתּ֖וֹ (with him), מַצֶּ֣בֶת (a pillar) אָ֑בֶן (of stone). וַיַּסֵּ֤ךְ (And he poured) עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (on it) נֶ֔סֶךְ (a drink offering), וַיִּצֹ֥ק (and he poured) עָלֶ֖יהָ (on it) שָֽׁמֶן׃ (oil). 15  וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) יַעֲקֹ֜ב (Jacob) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁ֣ם (the name) הַמָּק֗וֹם (of the place) אֲשֶׁר֩ (where) דִּבֶּ֨ר (had spoken) אִתּ֥וֹ (with him) שָׁ֛ם (-) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God), בֵּֽית־ (Beth-) אֵֽל׃ (el).

16  וַיִּסְעוּ֙ (And they journeyed) מִבֵּ֣ית (from Beth-) אֵ֔ל (el), וַֽיְהִי־ (and there was) ע֥וֹד (still) כִּבְרַת־ (some distance) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of land) לָב֣וֹא (to go) אֶפְרָ֑תָה (to Ephrathah), וַתֵּ֥לֶד (and gave birth) רָחֵ֖ל (Rachel), וַתְּקַ֥שׁ (and she had great difficulty) בְּלִדְתָּֽהּ׃ (in giving birth). 17  וַיְהִ֥י (And it came to pass), בְהַקְשֹׁתָ֖הּ (when she having difficulty) בְּלִדְתָּ֑הּ (in giving birth), וַתֹּ֨אמֶר (that she said) לָ֤הּ (to her) הַמְיַלֶּ֙דֶת֙ (the midwife), אַל־ (Not) תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י (do fear), כִּֽי־ (for) גַם־ (also) זֶ֥ה (this is) לָ֖ךְ (for you), בֵּֽן׃ (a son).

18  וַיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass), בְּצֵ֤את (as was departing) נַפְשָׁהּ֙ (her soul)— כִּ֣י (for) מֵ֔תָה (she died)— וַתִּקְרָ֥א (that she called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) בֶּן־ (Ben-) אוֹנִ֑י (oni). וְאָבִ֖יו (And his father) קָֽרָא־ (called) ל֥וֹ (him) בִנְיָמִֽין׃ (Benjamin).

19  וַתָּ֖מָת (And died) רָחֵ֑ל (Rachel) וַתִּקָּבֵר֙ (and was buried) בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ (on the way) אֶפְרָ֔תָה (to Ephrathah), הִ֖וא (that is) בֵּ֥ית (Beth-) לָֽחֶם׃ (lehem). 20  וַיַּצֵּ֧ב (And set up) יַעֲקֹ֛ב (Jacob) מַצֵּבָ֖ה (a pillar) עַל־ (over) קְבֻרָתָ֑הּ (her grave); הִ֛וא (that is) מַצֶּ֥בֶת (the pillar) קְבֻֽרַת־ (of the grave) רָחֵ֖ל (of Rachel) עַד־ (to) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (this day).

21  וַיִּסַּ֖ע (And journeyed) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel) וַיֵּ֣ט (and he pitched) אָֽהֳלֹ֔ה (his tent) מֵהָ֖לְאָה (beyond) לְמִגְדַּל־ (the Tower) עֵֽדֶר׃ (of Eder).

22  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), בִּשְׁכֹּ֤ן (while dwelling) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) בָּאָ֣רֶץ (in the land) הַהִ֔וא (that), וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (and went in) רְאוּבֵ֔ן (Reuben) וַיִּשְׁכַּ֕ב֙ (and lay with) אֶת־ (-) בִּלְהָ֖ה֙ (Bilhah), פִּילֶ֣גֶשׁ (concubine) אָבִ֑֔יו (of his father); וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע (and heard of it) יִשְׂרָאֵֽ֑ל פ (Israel). וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ (And were) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (of Jacob) שְׁנֵ֥ים (two) עָשָֽׂר׃ (and ten):

23  בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) לֵאָ֔ה (of Leah): בְּכ֥וֹר (Firstborn) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (of Jacob) רְאוּבֵ֑ן (Reuben), וְשִׁמְעוֹן֙ (and Simeon), וְלֵוִ֣י (and Levi), וִֽיהוּדָ֔ה (and Judah), וְיִשָּׂשכָ֖ר (and Issachar), וּזְבוּלֻֽן׃ (and Zebulun);

24  בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) רָחֵ֔ל (of Rachel): יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) וּבִנְיָמִֽן׃ (and Benjamin);

25  וּבְנֵ֤י (and the sons) בִלְהָה֙ (of Bilhah), שִׁפְחַ֣ת (maidservant) רָחֵ֔ל (of Rachel): דָּ֖ן (Dan) וְנַפְתָּלִֽי׃ (and Naphtali);

26  וּבְנֵ֥י (and the sons) זִלְפָּ֛ה (of Zilpah), שִׁפְחַ֥ת (maidservant) לֵאָ֖ה (of Leah): גָּ֣ד (Gad) וְאָשֵׁ֑ר (and Asher).

אֵ֚לֶּה (These are) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יֻלַּד־ (were born) ל֖וֹ (to him) בְּפַדַּ֥ן (in Paddan-) אֲרָֽם׃ (aram).

The Death of Isaac

27  וַיָּבֹ֤א (And came) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob) אֶל־ (to) יִצְחָ֣ק (Isaac) אָבִ֔יו (his father) מַמְרֵ֖א (at Mamre), קִרְיַ֣ת (near Kiriath-) הָֽאַרְבַּ֑ע (arba), הִ֣וא (that is) חֶבְר֔וֹן (Hebron)) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) גָּֽר־ (had sojourned) שָׁ֥ם (there) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) וְיִצְחָֽק׃ (and Isaac).

28  וַיִּֽהְי֖וּ (And were) יְמֵ֣י (the days) יִצְחָ֑ק (of Isaac) מְאַ֥ת (a hundred) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וּשְׁמֹנִ֥ים (and eighty) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 29  וַיִּגְוַ֨ע (And expired) יִצְחָ֤ק (Isaac) וַיָּ֙מָת֙ (and he died), וַיֵּאָ֣סֶף (and he was gathered) אֶל־ (to) עַמָּ֔יו (his people), זָקֵ֖ן (old) וּשְׂבַ֣ע (and full) יָמִ֑ים (of days). וַיִּקְבְּר֣וּ (And buried) אֹת֔וֹ (him) עֵשָׂ֥ו (Esau) וְיַעֲקֹ֖ב (and Jacob) בָּנָֽיו׃פ (his sons).
