Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife

1 וְיוֹסֵ֖ף (And Joseph) הוּרַ֣ד (had been taken down) מִצְרָ֑יְמָה (to Egypt); וַיִּקְנֵ֡הוּ (and bought him) פּוֹטִיפַר֩ (Potiphar), סְרִ֨יס (an officer) פַּרְעֹ֜ה (of Pharaoh), שַׂ֤ר (captain) הַטַּבָּחִים֙ (of the guards), אִ֣ישׁ (man) מִצְרִ֔י (an Egyptian), מִיַּד֙ (from the hand) הַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֔ים (of the Ishmaelites) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) הוֹרִדֻ֖הוּ (had taken him down) שָֽׁמָּה׃ (there).

2 וַיְהִ֤י (And was) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (with) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph), וַיְהִ֖י (and he was) אִ֣ישׁ (a man) מַצְלִ֑יחַ (successful), וַיְהִ֕י (and he was) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) אֲדֹנָ֖יו (of his lord) הַמִּצְרִֽי׃ (the Egyptian).

3 וַיַּ֣רְא (And saw) אֲדֹנָ֔יו (his lord) כִּ֥י (that) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH was) אִתּ֑וֹ (with him), וְכֹל֙ (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) ה֣וּא (he) עֹשֶׂ֔ה (was doing), יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מַצְלִ֥יחַ (was making successful) בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ (in his hand).

4 וַיִּמְצָ֨א (And found) יוֹסֵ֥ף (Joseph) חֵ֛ן (favor) בְּעֵינָ֖יו (in his eyes), וַיְשָׁ֣רֶת (and served) אֹת֑וֹ (him). וַיַּפְקִדֵ֙הוּ֙ (And he appointed him) עַל־ (over) בֵּית֔וֹ (his house), וְכָל־ (and all) יֶשׁ־ (that he had) ל֖וֹ (to him), נָתַ֥ן (he put) בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ (in his hand).

5 וַיְהִ֡י (And it came to pass), מֵאָז֩ (from the time) הִפְקִ֨יד (he had appointed him) אֹת֜וֹ (him) בְּבֵית֗וֹ (over his house), וְעַל֙ (and over) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יֶשׁ־ (had) ל֔וֹ (he), וַיְבָ֧רֶךְ (that blessed) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (house) הַמִּצְרִ֖י (of the Egyptian) בִּגְלַ֣ל (on account) יוֹסֵ֑ף (of Joseph). וַיְהִ֞י (And was) בִּרְכַּ֤ת (the blessing) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) בְּכָל־ (on all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יֶשׁ־ (had) ל֔וֹ (he) בַּבַּ֖יִת (in the house) וּבַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (and in the field).

6 וַיַּעֲזֹ֣ב (And he left) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) לוֹ֮ (unto him) בְּיַד־ (in the hand) יוֹסֵף֒ (of Joseph); וְלֹא־ (and not) יָדַ֤ע (he did know) אִתּוֹ֙ (with him) מְא֔וּמָה (anything) כִּ֥י (except) אִם־ (for) הַלֶּ֖חֶם (the bread) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) ה֣וּא (he) אוֹכֵ֑ל (was eating). וַיְהִ֣י (And was) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph) יְפֵה־ (handsome) תֹ֖אַר (in form), וִיפֵ֥ה (and handsome) מַרְאֶֽה׃ (in appearance).

7 וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) אַחַר֙ (after) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the things) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these), וַתִּשָּׂ֧א (lifted up) אֵֽשֶׁת־ (that the wife) אֲדֹנָ֛יו (of his lord) אֶת־ (-) עֵינֶ֖יהָ (her eyes) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֑ף (Joseph); וַתֹּ֖אמֶר (and she said), שִׁכְבָ֥ה (Lie) עִמִּֽי׃ (with me).

8 וַיְמָאֵ֓ן׀ (And he refused), וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said) אֶל־ (to) אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) אֲדֹנָ֔יו (of his lord), הֵ֣ן (Behold), אֲדֹנִ֔י (my lord) לֹא־ (not) יָדַ֥ע (has known) אִתִּ֖י (with me) מַה־ (what is) בַּבָּ֑יִת (in the house), וְכֹ֥ל (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יֶשׁ־ (had) ל֖וֹ (he) נָתַ֥ן (he has put) בְּיָדִֽי׃ (in my hand).

9 אֵינֶ֨נּוּ (There is no one) גָד֜וֹל (greater) בַּבַּ֣יִת (in the house) הַזֶּה֮ (this) מִמֶּנִּי֒ (than I). וְלֹֽא־ (And not) חָשַׂ֤ךְ (has he withheld) מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ (from me) מְא֔וּמָה (anything) כִּ֥י (except) אִם־ (if) אוֹתָ֖ךְ (you), בַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (because) אַתְּ־ (you are) אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ (his wife). וְאֵ֨יךְ (And how) אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֜ה (can I do) הָרָעָ֤ה (the evil) הַגְּדֹלָה֙ (great) הַזֹּ֔את (this), וְחָטָ֖אתִי (and sin) לֵֽאלֹהִֽים׃ (against God)?

10 וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass), כְּדַבְּרָ֥הּ (as she spoke) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) י֣וֹם׀ (day) י֑וֹם (by day), וְלֹא־ (that not) שָׁמַ֥ע (he did listen) אֵלֶ֛יהָ (to her) לִשְׁכַּ֥ב (to lie) אֶצְלָ֖הּ (beside her) לִהְי֥וֹת (to be) עִמָּֽהּ׃ (with her).

11 וַיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) כְּהַיּ֣וֹם (on a day) הַזֶּ֔ה (such), וַיָּבֹ֥א (that he went) הַבַּ֖יְתָה (into the house) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to do) מְלַאכְתּ֑וֹ (his work), וְאֵ֨ין (and not) אִ֜ישׁ (a man) מֵאַנְשֵׁ֥י (from the men) הַבַּ֛יִת (of the house) שָׁ֖ם (was there) בַּבָּֽיִת׃ (in the house).

12 וַתִּתְפְּשֵׂ֧הוּ (And she caught him) בְּבִגְד֛וֹ (by his garment), לֵאמֹ֖ר (saying), שִׁכְבָ֣ה (Lie) עִמִּ֑י (with me)! וַיַּעֲזֹ֤ב (And he left) בִּגְדוֹ֙ (his garment) בְּיָדָ֔הּ (in her hand), וַיָּ֖נָס (and he fled), וַיֵּצֵ֥א (and he went) הַחֽוּצָה׃ (outside).

Joseph Falsely Imprisoned

13 וַיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass), כִּרְאוֹתָ֔הּ (when she saw) כִּֽי־ (that) עָזַ֥ב (he had left) בִּגְד֖וֹ (his garment) בְּיָדָ֑הּ (in her hand) וַיָּ֖נָס (and he fled) הַחֽוּצָה׃ (outside),

14 וַתִּקְרָ֞א (that she called) לְאַנְשֵׁ֣י (to the men) בֵיתָ֗הּ (of her house), וַתֹּ֤אמֶר (and she said) לָהֶם֙ (to them), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), רְא֗וּ (See), הֵ֥בִיא (he has brought in) לָ֛נוּ (to us) אִ֥ישׁ (a man) עִבְרִ֖י (Hebrew) לְצַ֣חֶק (to mock) בָּ֑נוּ (us)! בָּ֤א (He came) אֵלַי֙ (to me) לִשְׁכַּ֣ב (to lie) עִמִּ֔י (with me), וָאֶקְרָ֖א (and I cried out) בְּק֥וֹל (in a voice) גָּדֽוֹל׃ (loud).

15 וַיְהִ֣י (And it came to pass), כְשָׁמְע֔וֹ (when he heard) כִּֽי־ (that) הֲרִימֹ֥תִי (I lifted up) קוֹלִ֖י (my voice) וָאֶקְרָ֑א (and cried out), וַיַּעֲזֹ֤ב (that he left) בִּגְדוֹ֙ (his garment) אֶצְלִ֔י (beside me), וַיָּ֖נָס (and he fled), וַיֵּצֵ֥א (and he went) הַחֽוּצָה׃ (outside).

16 וַתַּנַּ֥ח (And she kept) בִּגְד֖וֹ (his garment) אֶצְלָ֑הּ (beside her), עַד־ (until) בּ֥וֹא (came) אֲדֹנָ֖יו (his lord) אֶל־ (to) בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ (his house).

17 וַתְּדַבֵּ֣ר (And she spoke) אֵלָ֔יו (to him) כַּדְּבָרִ֥ים (with the words) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (like these), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), בָּֽא־ (Came) אֵלַ֞י (to me) הָעֶ֧בֶד (the servant), הָֽעִבְרִ֛י (the Hebrew), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הֵבֵ֥אתָ (you brought) לָּ֖נוּ (to us) לְצַ֥חֶק (to mock) בִּֽי׃ (me).

18 וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass), כַּהֲרִימִ֥י (as I lifted up) קוֹלִ֖י (my voice) וָאֶקְרָ֑א (and cried out), וַיַּעֲזֹ֥ב (that he left) בִּגְד֛וֹ (his garment) אֶצְלִ֖י (beside me) וַיָּ֥נָס (and he fled) הַחֽוּצָה׃ (outside).

19 וַיְהִי֩ (And it came to pass), כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ (when heard) אֲדֹנָ֜יו (his lord) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֣י (the words) אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ (of his wife), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) דִּבְּרָ֤ה (she spoke) אֵלָיו֙ (to him), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), כַּדְּבָרִ֣ים (Words) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (according to these) עָ֥שָׂהּ (did) לִ֖י (to me) עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ (your servant), וַיִּ֖חַר (and burned) אַפּֽוֹ׃ (his anger).

20 וַיִּקַּח֩ (And took) אֲדֹנֵ֨י (the lord) יוֹסֵ֜ף (of Joseph) אֹת֗וֹ (him), וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֙הוּ֙ (and put him) אֶל־ (into) בֵּ֣ית (house) הַסֹּ֔הַר (the prison), מְק֕וֹם (a place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) אֲסוּרֵי (the prisoners) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of the king) אֲסוּרִ֑ים (were confined). וַֽיְהִי־ (And he was) שָׁ֖ם (there) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) הַסֹּֽהַר׃ (the prison).

21 וַיְהִ֤י (And was) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (with) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph), וַיֵּ֥ט (and extended) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) חָ֑סֶד (kindness), וַיִּתֵּ֣ן (and He gave him) חִנּ֔וֹ (favor) בְּעֵינֵ֖י (in the eyes) שַׂ֥ר (of the captain) בֵּית־ (house) הַסֹּֽהַר׃ (of the prison).

22 וַיִּתֵּ֞ן (And gave) שַׂ֤ר (the captain) בֵּית־ (house) הַסֹּ֙הַר֙ (of the prison) בְּיַד־ (into the hand) יוֹסֵ֔ף (of Joseph) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הָ֣אֲסִירִ֔ם (the prisoners) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who were) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) הַסֹּ֑הַר (the prison). וְאֵ֨ת (And) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) עֹשִׂים֙ (they were doing) שָׁ֔ם (there), ה֖וּא (he) הָיָ֥ה (was) עֹשֶֽׂה׃ (the one doing).

23 אֵ֣ין׀ (Not) שַׂ֣ר (the captain) בֵּית־ (house) הַסֹּ֗הַר (of the prison) רֹאֶ֤ה (was looking at) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (at all) מְא֙וּמָה֙ (anything) בְּיָד֔וֹ (in his hand), בַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (because) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אִתּ֑וֹ (was with him), וַֽאֲשֶׁר־ (and whatever) ה֥וּא (he) עֹשֶׂ֖ה (was doing), יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) מַצְלִֽיחַ׃ס (was making successful).
