The Cupbearer and the Baker

1  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), אַחַר֙ (after) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the things) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these), חָֽטְא֛וּ (sinned) מַשְׁקֵ֥ה (the cupbearer) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (of the king) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) וְהָאֹפֶ֑ה (and the baker) לַאֲדֹנֵיהֶ֖ם (against their lord), לְמֶ֥לֶךְ (against the king) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 2  וַיִּקְצֹ֣ף (And was angry) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh) עַ֖ל (with) שְׁנֵ֣י (two) סָרִיסָ֑יו (his officers), עַ֚ל (with) שַׂ֣ר (chief) הַמַּשְׁקִ֔ים (of the cupbearers), וְעַ֖ל (and) שַׂ֥ר (chief) הָאוֹפִֽים׃ (of the bakers). 3  וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (And he put) אֹתָ֜ם (them) בְּמִשְׁמַ֗ר (in custody) בֵּ֛ית (in the house) שַׂ֥ר (of the captain) הַטַבָּחִ֖ים (of the guards), אֶל־ (in) בֵּ֣ית (house) הַסֹּ֑הַר (the prison), מְק֕וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) אָס֥וּר (was confined) שָֽׁם׃ (-). 4  וַ֠יִּפְקֹד (And appointed) שַׂ֣ר (the captain) הַטַּבָּחִ֧ים (of the guards) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵ֛ף (Joseph) אִתָּ֖ם (to them), וַיְשָׁ֣רֶת (and he served) אֹתָ֑ם (them) וַיִּהְי֥וּ (and they were) יָמִ֖ים (days) בְּמִשְׁמָֽר׃ (in custody). 5  וַיַּֽחַלְמוּ֩ (And they dreamed) חֲל֨וֹם (a dream) שְׁנֵיהֶ֜ם (the two of them), אִ֤ישׁ (each man) חֲלֹמוֹ֙ (his dream) בְּלַ֣יְלָה (in night) אֶחָ֔ד (one), אִ֖ישׁ (and each man) כְּפִתְר֣וֹן (according to the interpretation) חֲלֹמ֑וֹ (of his dream), הַמַּשְׁקֶ֣ה (the cupbearer) וְהָאֹפֶ֗ה (and the baker), אֲשֶׁר֙ (who) לְמֶ֣לֶךְ (belonged to the king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) אֲסוּרִ֖ים (were confined) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) הַסֹּֽהַר׃ (the prison).

6  וַיָּבֹ֧א (And came) אֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (to them) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) בַּבֹּ֑קֶר (in the morning), וַיַּ֣רְא (and he saw) אֹתָ֔ם (them), וְהִנָּ֖ם (and behold, they) זֹעֲפִֽים׃ (were troubled). 7  וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל (And he asked) אֶת־ (-) סְרִיסֵ֣י (the officers) פַרְעֹ֗ה (of Pharaoh) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who were) אִתּ֧וֹ (with him) בְמִשְׁמַ֛ר (in custody) בֵּ֥ית (in the house) אֲדֹנָ֖יו (of his lord), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), מַדּ֛וּעַ (Why) פְּנֵיכֶ֥ם (your⁺ faces) רָעִ֖ים (are evil) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today)?

8  וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), חֲל֣וֹם (A dream) חָלַ֔מְנוּ (we have dreamed), וּפֹתֵ֖ר (and interpreter) אֵ֣ין (there is no) אֹת֑וֹ (of it).

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֲלֵהֶ֜ם (to them) יוֹסֵ֗ף (Joseph), הֲל֤וֹא (Do not) לֵֽאלֹהִים֙ (belong to God) פִּתְרֹנִ֔ים (interpretations)? סַפְּרוּ־ (Tell them) נָ֖א (please) לִֽי׃ (to me).

9  וַיְסַפֵּ֧ר (And told) שַֽׂר־ (chief) הַמַּשְׁקִ֛ים (of the cupbearers) אֶת־ (-) חֲלֹמ֖וֹ (his dream) לְיוֹסֵ֑ף (to Joseph), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) ל֔וֹ (to him), בַּחֲלוֹמִ֕י (In my dream), וְהִנֵּה־ (and behold), גֶ֖פֶן (a vine was) לְפָנָֽי׃ (before me). 10  וּבַגֶּ֖פֶן (And in the vine were) שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה (three) שָׂרִיגִ֑ם (branches). וְהִ֤יא (And it was) כְפֹרַ֙חַת֙ (as though it budded), עָלְתָ֣ה (came up) נִצָּ֔הּ (its blossoms), הִבְשִׁ֥ילוּ (ripened) אַשְׁכְּלֹתֶ֖יהָ (its clusters) עֲנָבִֽים׃ (grapes). 11  וְכ֥וֹס (And the cup) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (of Pharaoh) בְּיָדִ֑י (was in my hand); וָאֶקַּ֣ח (and I took) אֶת־ (-) הָֽעֲנָבִ֗ים (the grapes), וָֽאֶשְׂחַ֤ט (and pressed) אֹתָם֙ (them) אֶל־ (into) כּ֣וֹס (the cup) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh), וָאֶתֵּ֥ן (and I put) אֶת־ (-) הַכּ֖וֹס (the cup) עַל־ (in) כַּ֥ף (the hand) פַּרְעֹֽה׃ (of Pharaoh).

12  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לוֹ֙ (to him) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph), זֶ֖ה (This is) פִּתְרֹנ֑וֹ (its interpretation): שְׁלֹ֙שֶׁת֙ (Three) הַשָּׂ֣רִגִ֔ים (the branches) שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (three) יָמִ֖ים (days) הֵֽם׃ (they are). 13  בְּע֣וֹד׀ (Within) שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (three) יָמִ֗ים (days) יִשָּׂ֤א (will lift up) פַרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) אֶת־ (-) רֹאשֶׁ֔ךָ (your head) וַהֲשִֽׁיבְךָ֖ (and restore you) עַל־ (to) כַּנֶּ֑ךָ (your place), וְנָתַתָּ֤ (and you will put) כוֹס־ (the cup) פַּרְעֹה֙ (of Pharaoh) בְּיָד֔וֹ (into his hand) כַּמִּשְׁפָּט֙ (according to the manner) הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן (former), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (when) הָיִ֖יתָ (you were) מַשְׁקֵֽהוּ׃ (his cupbearer). 14  כִּ֧י (But) אִם־ (only that) זְכַרְתַּ֣נִי (you remember) אִתְּךָ֗ (me) כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ (when) יִ֣יטַב (it is well) לָ֔ךְ (with you), וְעָשִֽׂיתָ־ (and do) נָּ֥א (please) עִמָּדִ֖י (with me) חָ֑סֶד (kindness), וְהִזְכַּרְתַּ֙נִי֙ (and make mention of me) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh), וְהוֹצֵאתַ֖נִי (and get me out) מִן־ (of) הַבַּ֥יִת (house) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 15  כִּֽי־ (For) גֻנֹּ֣ב (being stolen) גֻּנַּ֔בְתִּי (I was stolen) מֵאֶ֖רֶץ (from the land) הָעִבְרִ֑ים (of the Hebrews), וְגַם־ (and also) פֹּה֙ (here) לֹא־ (not) עָשִׂ֣יתִֽי (have I done) מְא֔וּמָה (anything) כִּֽי־ (that) שָׂמ֥וּ (they should put) אֹתִ֖י (me) בַּבּֽוֹר׃ (in the pit).

16  וַיַּ֥רְא (And saw) שַׂר־ (chief) הָאֹפִ֖ים (of the bakers) כִּ֣י (that) ט֣וֹב (well) פָּתָ֑ר (he interpreted), וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and he said) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph), אַף־ (Also) אֲנִי֙ (I was) בַּחֲלוֹמִ֔י (in my dream), וְהִנֵּ֗ה (and behold) שְׁלֹשָׁ֛ה (three) סַלֵּ֥י (baskets) חֹרִ֖י (of white bread) עַל־ (were on) רֹאשִֽׁי׃ (my head). 17  וּבַסַּ֣ל (And in the basket) הָֽעֶלְי֔וֹן (uppermost) מִכֹּ֛ל (were all kinds of) מַאֲכַ֥ל (food) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (for Pharaoh) מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (the work) אֹפֶ֑ה (of a baker), וְהָע֗וֹף (and the birds) אֹכֵ֥ל (were eating) אֹתָ֛ם (them) מִן־ (out) הַסַּ֖ל (of the basket) מֵעַ֥ל (from upon) רֹאשִֽׁי׃ (my head).

18  וַיַּ֤עַן (And answered) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) וַיֹּ֔אמֶר (and said), זֶ֖ה (This is) פִּתְרֹנ֑וֹ (its interpretation): שְׁלֹ֙שֶׁת֙ (Three) הַסַּלִּ֔ים (the baskets) שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (three) יָמִ֖ים (days) הֵֽם׃ (are). 19  בְּע֣וֹד׀ (Within) שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (three) יָמִ֗ים (days) יִשָּׂ֨א (will lift up) פַרְעֹ֤ה (Pharaoh) אֶת־ (-) רֹֽאשְׁךָ֙ (your head) מֵֽעָלֶ֔יךָ (from upon you) וְתָלָ֥ה (and hang) אוֹתְךָ֖ (you) עַל־ (on) עֵ֑ץ (a tree). וְאָכַ֥ל (And will eat) הָע֛וֹף (the birds) אֶת־ (-) בְּשָׂרְךָ֖ (your flesh) מֵעָלֶֽיךָ׃ (from upon you).

20  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass), בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗י (third), י֚וֹם (the day) הֻלֶּ֣דֶת (of birth) אֶת־ (-) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh), וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (that he made) מִשְׁתֶּ֖ה (a feast) לְכָל־ (for all) עֲבָדָ֑יו (his servants), וַיִּשָּׂ֞א (and he lifted up) אֶת־ (-) רֹ֣אשׁ׀ (the head) שַׂ֣ר (of chief) הַמַּשְׁקִ֗ים (of the cupbearers) וְאֶת־ (and) רֹ֛אשׁ (the head) שַׂ֥ר (of the chief) הָאֹפִ֖ים (of the bakers) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) עֲבָדָֽיו׃ (of his servants). 21  וַיָּ֛שֶׁב (And he restored) אֶת־ (-) שַׂ֥ר (the chief) הַמַּשְׁקִ֖ים (of the cupbearers) עַל־ (to) מַשְׁקֵ֑הוּ (his cupbearership), וַיִּתֵּ֥ן (and he put) הַכּ֖וֹס (the cup) עַל־ (in) כַּ֥ף (the hand) פַּרְעֹֽה׃ (of Pharaoh). 22  וְאֵ֛ת (And) שַׂ֥ר (the chief) הָאֹפִ֖ים (of the bakers) תָּלָ֑ה (he hanged), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) פָּתַ֛ר (had interpreted) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) יוֹסֵֽף׃ (Joseph).

23  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) זָכַ֧ר (did remember) שַֽׂר־ (chief) הַמַּשְׁקִ֛ים (of the cupbearers) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph), וַיִּשְׁכָּחֵֽהוּ׃פ (and he forgot him).
