The Dreams of Pharaoh

1  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass) מִקֵּ֖ץ (at the end) שְׁנָתַ֣יִם (of two years) יָמִ֑ים (of days), וּפַרְעֹ֣ה (that Pharaoh) חֹלֵ֔ם (was dreaming), וְהִנֵּ֖ה (and behold), עֹמֵ֥ד (he was standing) עַל־ (by) הַיְאֹֽר׃ (the River). 2  וְהִנֵּ֣ה (And behold) מִן־ (out) הַיְאֹ֗ר (of the River) עֹלֹת֙ (came up) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) פָּר֔וֹת (cows), יְפ֥וֹת (beautiful) מַרְאֶ֖ה (of appearance) וּבְרִיאֹ֣ת (and fat) בָּשָׂ֑ר (of flesh), וַתִּרְעֶ֖ינָה (and they grazed) בָּאָֽחוּ׃ (among the reeds). 3  וְהִנֵּ֞ה (And behold), שֶׁ֧בַע (seven) פָּר֣וֹת (cows) אֲחֵר֗וֹת (other) עֹל֤וֹת (came up) אַחֲרֵיהֶן֙ (after them) מִן־ (out) הַיְאֹ֔ר (of the River), רָע֥וֹת (ugly) מַרְאֶ֖ה (of appearance) וְדַקּ֣וֹת (and thin) בָּשָׂ֑ר (of flesh), וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֛דְנָה (and stood) אֵ֥צֶל (beside) הַפָּר֖וֹת (the cows) עַל־ (on) שְׂפַ֥ת (the edge) הַיְאֹֽר׃ (of the River). 4  וַתֹּאכַ֣לְנָה (And ate) הַפָּר֗וֹת (the cows) רָע֤וֹת (that were ugly) הַמַּרְאֶה֙ (of appearance) וְדַקֹּ֣ת (and thin) הַבָּשָׂ֔ר (of flesh) אֵ֚ת (-) שֶׁ֣בַע (the seven) הַפָּר֔וֹת (cows) יְפֹ֥ת (beautiful) הַמַּרְאֶ֖ה (of appearance) וְהַבְּרִיאֹ֑ת (and fat).

וַיִּיקַ֖ץ (And awoke) פַּרְעֹֽה׃ (Pharaoh). 5  וַיִּישָׁ֕ן (And he slept) וַֽיַּחֲלֹ֖ם (and dreamed) שֵׁנִ֑ית (a second time), וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀ (and behold) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) שִׁבֳּלִ֗ים (heads of grain) עֹל֛וֹת (came up) בְּקָנֶ֥ה (on stalk) אֶחָ֖ד (one) בְּרִיא֥וֹת (fat) וְטֹבֽוֹת׃ (and good). 6  וְהִנֵּה֙ (And behold), שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) שִׁבֳּלִ֔ים (heads of grain) דַּקּ֖וֹת (thin) וּשְׁדוּפֹ֣ת (and scorched by) קָדִ֑ים (the east wind) צֹמְח֖וֹת (were sprouting) אַחֲרֵיהֶֽן׃ (after them). 7  וַתִּבְלַ֙עְנָה֙ (And swallowed) הַשִּׁבֳּלִ֣ים (heads of grain) הַדַּקּ֔וֹת (thin) אֵ֚ת (-), שֶׁ֣בַע (the seven) הַֽשִּׁבֳּלִ֔ים (the heads) הַבְּרִיא֖וֹת (fat) וְהַמְּלֵא֑וֹת (and full). וַיִּיקַ֥ץ (And awoke) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh), וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold) חֲלֽוֹם׃ (it was a dream).

8  וַיְהִ֤י (And it came to pass) בַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ (in the morning) וַתִּפָּ֣עֶם (that was troubled) רוּח֔וֹ (his spirit), וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח (and he sent) וַיִּקְרָ֛א (and called for) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) חַרְטֻמֵּ֥י (the magicians) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) חֲכָמֶ֑יהָ (its wise men), וַיְסַפֵּ֨ר (and told) פַּרְעֹ֤ה (Pharaoh) לָהֶם֙ (to them) אֶת־ (-) חֲלֹמ֔וֹ (his dreams); וְאֵין־ (and there was no one) פּוֹתֵ֥ר (interpreting) אוֹתָ֖ם (them) לְפַרְעֹֽה׃ (to Pharaoh).

9  וַיְדַבֵּר֙ (And spoke) שַׂ֣ר (the chief) הַמַּשְׁקִ֔ים (of the cupbearers) אֶת־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אֶת־ (-) חֲטָאַ֕י (My sin) אֲנִ֖י (I) מַזְכִּ֥יר (remember) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (this day); 10  פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh) קָצַ֣ף (was angry) עַל־ (with) עֲבָדָ֑יו (his servants), וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (and he put) אֹתִ֜י (me) בְּמִשְׁמַ֗ר (in custody) בֵּ֚ית (in the house) שַׂ֣ר (of the captain) הַטַּבָּחִ֔ים (of the guards), אֹתִ֕י (me) וְאֵ֖ת (and) שַׂ֥ר (the chief) הָאֹפִֽים׃ (of the bakers). 11  וַנַּֽחַלְמָ֥ה (And we each had) חֲל֛וֹם (a dream) בְּלַ֥יְלָה (in night) אֶחָ֖ד (one), אֲנִ֣י (I) וָה֑וּא (and he); אִ֛ישׁ (each man) כְּפִתְר֥וֹן (according to the interpretation) חֲלֹמ֖וֹ (of his dream) חָלָֽמְנוּ׃ (we dreamed). 12  וְשָׁ֨ם (And there) אִתָּ֜נוּ (there was with us) נַ֣עַר (a young man), עִבְרִ֗י (Hebrew) עֶ֚בֶד (a servant) לְשַׂ֣ר (of the captain) הַטַּבָּחִ֔ים (of the guards). וַנְּ֨סַפֶּר־ (And we told) ל֔וֹ (to him), וַיִּפְתָּר־ (and he interpreted) לָ֖נוּ (for us) אֶת־ (-) חֲלֹמֹתֵ֑ינוּ (our dreams); אִ֥ישׁ (each man) כַּחֲלֹמ֖וֹ (according to his dream) פָּתָֽר׃ (he interpreted). 13  וַיְהִ֛י (And it came to pass) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) פָּֽתַר־ (he interpreted) לָ֖נוּ (to us), כֵּ֣ן (so) הָיָ֑ה (it came to pass), אֹתִ֛י (me) הֵשִׁ֥יב (he restored) עַל־ (to) כַּנִּ֖י (my office), וְאֹת֥וֹ (and him) תָלָֽה׃ (he hanged).

Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dreams

14  וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (And sent) פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) וַיִּקְרָ֣א (and called) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph), וַיְרִיצֻ֖הוּ (and they hurried him) מִן־ (from) הַבּ֑וֹר (the pit). וַיְגַלַּח֙ (And he shaved) וַיְחַלֵּ֣ף (and changed) שִׂמְלֹתָ֔יו (his clothing), וַיָּבֹ֖א (and he came) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹֽה׃ (Pharaoh).

15  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph), חֲל֣וֹם (A dream) חָלַ֔מְתִּי (I have dreamed), וּפֹתֵ֖ר (and interpreting) אֵ֣ין (there is no one) אֹת֑וֹ (it). וַאֲנִ֗י (And I) שָׁמַ֤עְתִּי (have heard) עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ (of you) לֵאמֹ֔ר (it said) תִּשְׁמַ֥ע (that you hear) חֲל֖וֹם (a dream) לִפְתֹּ֥ר (to interpret) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (it).

16  וַיַּ֨עַן (And answered) יוֹסֵ֧ף (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) פַּרְעֹ֛ה (Pharaoh), לֵאמֹ֖ר (saying), בִּלְעָדָ֑י (It is not in me); אֱלֹהִ֕ים (God) יַעֲנֶ֖ה (will answer) אֶת־ (-) שְׁל֥וֹם (with peace) פַּרְעֹֽה׃ (Pharaoh).

17  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And said) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֑ף (Joseph), בַּחֲלֹמִ֕י (In my dream), הִנְנִ֥י (behold), עֹמֵ֖ד (I was standing) עַל־ (on) שְׂפַ֥ת (the edge) הַיְאֹֽר׃ (of the River), 18  וְהִנֵּ֣ה (and behold) מִן־ (out) הַיְאֹ֗ר (of the River) עֹלֹת֙ (came up) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) פָּר֔וֹת (cows) בְּרִיא֥וֹת (fat) בָּשָׂ֖ר (of flesh) וִיפֹ֣ת (and beautiful) תֹּ֑אַר (of appearance), וַתִּרְעֶ֖ינָה (and they grazed) בָּאָֽחוּ׃ (among the reeds). 19  וְהִנֵּ֞ה (And behold), שֶֽׁבַע־ (seven) פָּר֤וֹת (cows) אֲחֵרוֹת֙ (other) עֹל֣וֹת (came up) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ן (after them), דַּלּ֨וֹת (poor) וְרָע֥וֹת (and ugly) תֹּ֛אַר (of appearance) מְאֹ֖ד (very), וְרַקּ֣וֹת (and thin) בָּשָׂ֑ר (of flesh). לֹֽא־ (Never) רָאִ֧יתִי (have I seen) כָהֵ֛נָּה (such as these) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) לָרֹֽעַ׃ (for ugliness). 20  וַתֹּאכַ֙לְנָה֙ (And ate) הַפָּר֔וֹת (the cows) הָרַקּ֖וֹת (the thin) וְהָרָע֑וֹת (and ugly) אֵ֣ת (-) שֶׁ֧בַע (the seven) הַפָּר֛וֹת (cows) הָרִאשֹׁנ֖וֹת (first) הַבְּרִיאֹֽת׃ (fat). 21  וַתָּבֹ֣אנָה (And they went) אֶל־ (into) קִרְבֶּ֗נָה (their bellies), וְלֹ֤א (and no one) נוֹדַע֙ (would have known) כִּי־ (that) בָ֣אוּ (they had devoured) אֶל־ (to) קִרְבֶּ֔נָה (their bellies), וּמַרְאֵיהֶ֣ן (and for they were) רַ֔ע (ugly), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) בַּתְּחִלָּ֑ה (as at the beginning). וָאִיקָֽץ׃ (And I awoke).

22  וָאֵ֖רֶא (And I saw) בַּחֲלֹמִ֑י (in my dream), וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀ (and behold), שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) שִׁבֳּלִ֗ים (heads of grain) עֹלֹ֛ת (came up) בְּקָנֶ֥ה (on stalk) אֶחָ֖ד (one), מְלֵאֹ֥ת (full) וְטֹבֽוֹת׃ (and good), 23  וְהִנֵּה֙ (and behold), שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) שִׁבֳּלִ֔ים (heads of grain) צְנֻמ֥וֹת (withered), דַּקּ֖וֹת (thin), שְׁדֻפ֣וֹת (and scorched by) קָדִ֑ים (the east wind), צֹמְח֖וֹת (were sprouting) אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ (after them). 24  וַתִּבְלַ֙עְןָ֙ (And swallowed) הָשִׁבֳּלִ֣ים (heads of grain) הַדַּקֹּ֔ת (thin) אֵ֛ת (-) שֶׁ֥בַע (the seven) הַֽשִׁבֳּלִ֖ים (heads of grain) הַטֹּב֑וֹת (good).

וָֽאֹמַר֙ (And I told this) אֶל־ (to) הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֔ים (the magicians), וְאֵ֥ין (and there was no one) מַגִּ֖יד (who interpreted it) לִֽי׃ (for me).

25  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh), חֲל֥וֹם (The dream) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (of Pharaoh) אֶחָ֣ד (one) ה֑וּא (is). אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (What) הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים (God is) עֹשֶׂ֖ה (about to do), הִגִּ֥יד (He has declared) לְפַרְעֹֽה׃ (to Pharaoh). 26  שֶׁ֧בַע (Seven) פָּרֹ֣ת (cows) הַטֹּבֹ֗ת (the good) שֶׁ֤בַע (seven) שָׁנִים֙ (years) הֵ֔נָּה (they are), וְשֶׁ֤בַע (and the seven) הַֽשִּׁבֳּלִים֙ (heads of grain) הַטֹּבֹ֔ת (good) שֶׁ֥בַע (seven) שָׁנִ֖ים (years) הֵ֑נָּה (they are). חֲל֖וֹם (The dream) אֶחָ֥ד (one) הֽוּא׃ (is). 27  וְשֶׁ֣בַע (And the seven) הַ֠פָּרוֹת (cows) הָֽרַקּ֨וֹת (thin) וְהָרָעֹ֜ת (and ugly) הָעֹלֹ֣ת (that came up) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ן (after them) שֶׁ֤בַע (seven) שָׁנִים֙ (years) הֵ֔נָּה (they are); וְשֶׁ֤בַע (and seven) הַֽשִׁבֳּלִים֙ (the heads of grain) הָרֵק֔וֹת (empty), שְׁדֻפ֖וֹת (scorched by) הַקָּדִ֑ים (the east wind), יִהְי֕וּ (they are) שֶׁ֖בַע (seven) שְׁנֵ֥י (years) רָעָֽב׃ (of famine).

28  ה֣וּא (This is) הַדָּבָ֔ר (the word) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי (I have spoken) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh); אֲשֶׁ֧ר (What) הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים (God is) עֹשֶׂ֖ה (about to do), הֶרְאָ֥ה (He has shown) אֶת־ (-) פַּרְעֹֽה׃ (Pharaoh). 29  הִנֵּ֛ה (Behold), שֶׁ֥בַע (seven) שָׁנִ֖ים (years) בָּא֑וֹת (are coming) שָׂבָ֥ע (abundance) גָּד֖וֹל (great) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt), 30  וְ֠קָמוּ (and will arise) שֶׁ֜בַע (seven) שְׁנֵ֤י (years) רָעָב֙ (of famine) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ן (after them), וְנִשְׁכַּ֥ח (and will be forgotten) כָּל־ (all) הַשָּׂבָ֖ע (the abundance) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וְכִלָּ֥ה (and will consume) הָרָעָ֖ב (the famine) אֶת־ (-) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land). 31  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) יִוָּדַ֤ע (will be known) הַשָּׂבָע֙ (the abundance) בָּאָ֔רֶץ (in the land), מִפְּנֵ֛י (because) הָרָעָ֥ב (of famine) הַה֖וּא (that) אַחֲרֵי־ (is after) כֵ֑ן (thus); כִּֽי־ (for) כָבֵ֥ד (severe) ה֖וּא (it is) מְאֹֽד׃ (very).

32  וְעַ֨ל (And as for) הִשָּׁנ֧וֹת (the repeating) הַחֲל֛וֹם (of the dream) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh) פַּעֲמָ֑יִם (twice), כִּֽי־ (it is because) נָכ֤וֹן (is established) הַדָּבָר֙ (the thing) מֵעִ֣ם (by) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), וּמְמַהֵ֥ר (and is hastening) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) לַעֲשֹׂתֽוֹ׃ (to do it).

33  וְעַתָּה֙ (And now) יֵרֶ֣א (let look for) פַרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) נָב֣וֹן (discerning) וְחָכָ֑ם (and wise), וִישִׁיתֵ֖הוּ (and set him) עַל־ (over) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 34  יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה (Let do this) פַרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh), וְיַפְקֵ֥ד (and let him appoint) פְּקִדִ֖ים (officers) עַל־ (over) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land), וְחִמֵּשׁ֙ (and let him take a fifth) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֣רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) בְּשֶׁ֖בַע (in seven) שְׁנֵ֥י (years) הַשָּׂבָֽע׃ (of the abundance). 35  וְיִקְבְּצ֗וּ (And let them gather) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֹ֙כֶל֙ (the food) הַשָּׁנִ֣ים (of the years) הַטֹּבֹ֔ת (good) הַבָּאֹ֖ת (that are coming) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), וְיִצְבְּרוּ־ (and store up) בָ֞ר (grain) תַּ֧חַת (under) יַד־ (the hand) פַּרְעֹ֛ה (of Pharaoh), אֹ֥כֶל (food) בֶּעָרִ֖ים (in the cities) וְשָׁמָֽרוּ׃ (and guard it). 36  וְהָיָ֨ה (And it shall be) הָאֹ֤כֶל (food) לְפִקָּדוֹן֙ (as a reserve) לָאָ֔רֶץ (for the land) לְשֶׁ֙בַע֙ (for seven) שְׁנֵ֣י (years) הָרָעָ֔ב (of the famine) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּהְיֶ֖יןָ (shall be) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וְלֹֽא־ (that not) תִכָּרֵ֥ת (may be cut off) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) בָּרָעָֽב׃ (by the famine).

Joseph Given Charge of Egypt

37  וַיִּיטַ֥ב (And was good) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the word) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) פַרְעֹ֑ה (of Pharaoh), וּבְעֵינֵ֖י (and in the eyes) כָּל־ (of all) עֲבָדָֽיו׃ (his servants). 38  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (to) עֲבָדָ֑יו (his servants), הֲנִמְצָ֣א (Can we find) כָזֶ֔ה (such as this), אִ֕ישׁ (a man) אֲשֶׁ֛ר (whom) ר֥וּחַ (the Spirit) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) בּֽוֹ׃ (is in).

39  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph), אַחֲרֵ֨י (Since) הוֹדִ֧יעַ (has made known) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אוֹתְךָ֖ (you) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) זֹ֑את (this), אֵין־ (there is no one) נָב֥וֹן (as discerning) וְחָכָ֖ם (and wise) כָּמֽוֹךָ׃ (as you). 40  אַתָּה֙ (You) תִּהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) עַל־ (over) בֵּיתִ֔י (my house), וְעַל־ (and according to) פִּ֖יךָ (your mouth) יִשַּׁ֣ק (will kiss) כָּל־ (all) עַמִּ֑י (my people); רַ֥ק (only in regard to) הַכִּסֵּ֖א (the throne) אֶגְדַּ֥ל (will I be greater) מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ (than you).

41  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֑ף (Joseph), רְאֵה֙ (See), נָתַ֣תִּי (I have set) אֹֽתְךָ֔ (you) עַ֖ל (over) כָּל־ (all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 42  וַיָּ֨סַר (And removed) פַּרְעֹ֤ה (Pharaoh) אֶת־ (-) טַבַּעְתּוֹ֙ (his signet ring) מֵעַ֣ל (from) יָד֔וֹ (his hand), וַיִּתֵּ֥ן (and put) אֹתָ֖הּ (it) עַל־ (on) יַ֣ד (hand) יוֹסֵ֑ף (of Joseph), וַיַּלְבֵּ֤שׁ (and he clothed) אֹתוֹ֙ (him) בִּגְדֵי־ (in garments) שֵׁ֔שׁ (of fine linen), וַיָּ֛שֶׂם (and put) רְבִ֥ד (chain) הַזָּהָ֖ב (the gold) עַל־ (around) צַוָּארֽוֹ׃ (his neck). 43  וַיַּרְכֵּ֣ב (And he had ride) אֹת֗וֹ (him) בְּמִרְכֶּ֤בֶת (in chariot), הַמִּשְׁנֶה֙ (the second) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) ל֔וֹ (his), וַיִּקְרְא֥וּ (and they called out) לְפָנָ֖יו (before him), אַבְרֵ֑ךְ (Abrek)! וְנָת֣וֹן (And he set) אֹת֔וֹ (him) עַ֖ל (over) כָּל־ (all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

44  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹ֛ה (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph), אֲנִ֣י (I am) פַרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh), וּבִלְעָדֶ֗יךָ (and apart from you) לֹֽא־ (not) יָרִ֨ים (may lift) אִ֧ישׁ (man) אֶת־ (-) יָד֛וֹ (his hand) וְאֶת־ (or) רַגְל֖וֹ (his foot) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

45  וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) פַרְעֹ֣ה (Pharaoh) שֵׁם־ (the name) יוֹסֵף֮ (of Joseph) צָֽפְנַ֣ת (Zaphenath-) פַּעְנֵחַ֒ (paneah); וַיִּתֶּן־ (and he gave) ל֣וֹ (to him) אֶת־ (-) אָֽסְנַ֗ת (Asenath) בַּת־ (daughter) פּ֥וֹטִי (of Poti-) פֶ֛רַע (phera), כֹּהֵ֥ן (priest) אֹ֖ן (of On), לְאִשָּׁ֑ה (for a wife). וַיֵּצֵ֥א (And went out) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) עַל־ (over) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

The Seven Years of Plenty

46  וְיוֹסֵף֙ (And Joseph) בֶּן־ (was a son) שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים (of thirty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) בְּעָמְד֕וֹ (when he stood) לִפְנֵ֖י (before) פַּרְעֹ֣ה (Pharaoh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt). וַיֵּצֵ֤א (And went out) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) מִלִּפְנֵ֣י (from the presence) פַרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh), וַֽיַּעְבֹ֖ר (and he passed) בְּכָל־ (through all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

47  וַתַּ֣עַשׂ (And made) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) בְּשֶׁ֖בַע (in the seven) שְׁנֵ֣י (years) הַשָּׂבָ֑ע (of the abundance) לִקְמָצִֽים׃ (as handfuls). 48  וַיִּקְבֹּ֞ץ (And he gathered) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֹ֣כֶל׀ (the food) שֶׁ֣בַע (of the seven) שָׁנִ֗ים (years) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) הָיוּ֙ (were) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), וַיִּתֶּן־ (and he placed) אֹ֖כֶל (the food) בֶּעָרִ֑ים (in the cities). אֹ֧כֶל (The food) שְׂדֵה־ (of the fields) הָעִ֛יר (of the city) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) סְבִיבֹתֶ֖יהָ (surrounded them), נָתַ֥ן (he placed) בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃ (in its midst). 49  וַיִּצְבֹּ֨ר (And stored up) יוֹסֵ֥ף (Joseph) בָּ֛ר (grain) כְּח֥וֹל (like the sand) הַיָּ֖ם (of the sea) הַרְבֵּ֣ה (multiplying) מְאֹ֑ד (exceedingly) עַ֛ד (until) כִּי־ (that) חָדַ֥ל (he stopped) לִסְפֹּ֖ר (counting); כִּי־ (for) אֵ֥ין (it was without) מִסְפָּֽר׃ (number).

50  וּלְיוֹסֵ֤ף (And to Joseph) יֻלַּד֙ (were born) שְׁנֵ֣י (two) בָנִ֔ים (sons) בְּטֶ֥רֶם (before) תָּב֖וֹא (came) שְׁנַ֣ת (the year) הָרָעָ֑ב (of the famine), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whom) יָֽלְדָה־ (bore) לּוֹ֙ (to him) אָֽסְנַ֔ת (Asenath) בַּת־ (daughter) פּ֥וֹטִי (of Poti-) פֶ֖רַע (phera), כֹּהֵ֥ן (priest) אֽוֹן׃ (of On). 51  וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And called) יוֹסֵ֛ף (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁ֥ם (the name) הַבְּכ֖וֹר (of the firstborn) מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה (Manasseh), כִּֽי־ (For) נַשַּׁ֤נִי (has made me forget) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) עֲמָלִ֔י (my toil) וְאֵ֖ת (and) כָּל־ (all) בֵּ֥ית (the house) אָבִֽי׃ (of my father). 52  וְאֵ֛ת (And) שֵׁ֥ם (the name) הַשֵּׁנִ֖י (of the second) קָרָ֣א (he called) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (Ephraim), כִּֽי־ (For) הִפְרַ֥נִי (has caused me to be fruitful) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) עָנְיִֽי׃ (of my affliction).

The Famine Begins

53  וַתִּכְלֶ֕ינָה (And came to an end) שֶׁ֖בַע (the seven) שְׁנֵ֣י (years) הַשָּׂבָ֑ע (of the abundance) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הָיָ֖ה (were) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt), 54  וַתְּחִלֶּ֜ינָה (and began) שֶׁ֣בַע (the seven) שְׁנֵ֤י (years) הָרָעָב֙ (of the famine) לָב֔וֹא (to come), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) אָמַ֣ר (had said) יוֹסֵ֑ף (Joseph). וַיְהִ֤י (And there was) רָעָב֙ (famine) בְּכָל־ (in all) הָ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת (the lands), וּבְכָל־ (and in all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) הָ֥יָה (there was) לָֽחֶם׃ (bread). 55  וַתִּרְעַב֙ (And hungered) כָּל־ (all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt). וַיִּצְעַ֥ק (And cried) הָעָ֛ם (the people) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (Pharaoh) לַלָּ֑חֶם (for bread), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) פַּרְעֹ֤ה (Pharaoh) לְכָל־ (to all) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (Egypt), לְכ֣וּ (Go) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֔ף (Joseph); אֲשֶׁר־ (whatever) יֹאמַ֥ר (he says) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺), תַּעֲשֽׂוּ׃ (do).

56  וְהָרָעָ֣ב (And the famine) הָיָ֔ה (was) עַ֖ל (over) כָּל־ (all) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land), וַיִּפְתַּ֨ח (and opened) יוֹסֵ֜ף (Joseph) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) בָּהֶם֙ (was in them) וַיִּשְׁבֹּ֣ר (and sold) לְמִצְרַ֔יִם (to the Egyptians); וַיֶּחֱזַ֥ק (and was strong) הָֽרָעָ֖ב (the famine) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 57  וְכָל־ (And all) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the earth) בָּ֣אוּ (came) מִצְרַ֔יְמָה (to Egypt) לִשְׁבֹּ֖ר (to buy) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֑ף (Joseph), כִּֽי־ (because) חָזַ֥ק (was strong) הָרָעָ֖ב (the famine) בְּכָל־ (in all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).
