The Parable of the Sower
(Mark 4:1–9; Luke 8:4–8)
1 Ἐν (In) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (that) ἐξελθὼν (having gone out) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τῆς (of the) οἰκίας (house) ἐκάθητο (was sitting) παρὰ (by) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea)·
2 καὶ (And) συνήχθησαν (were gathered together) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) ὄχλοι (crowds) πολλοί (many), ὥστε (so that) αὐτὸν (He) εἰς (into) πλοῖον (a boat) ἐμβάντα (having entered) καθῆσθαι (sat down), καὶ (and) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) αἰγιαλὸν (shore) εἱστήκει (stood).
3 Καὶ (And) ἐλάλησεν (He spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them) πολλὰ (many things) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) λέγων (saying)· Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) ὁ (the one) σπείρων (sowing) τοῦ (-) σπείρειν (to sow).
4 καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) σπείρειν (sowing) αὐτὸν (of him) ἃ (some) μὲν (indeed) ἔπεσεν (fell) παρὰ (along) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (path), καὶ (and) ἐλθόντα (having come) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) κατέφαγεν (devoured) αὐτά (them).
5 Ἄλλα (Others) δὲ (now) ἔπεσεν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰ (the) πετρώδη (rocky places) ὅπου (where) οὐκ (not) εἶχεν (it had) γῆν (soil) πολλήν (much), καὶ (and) εὐθέως (immediately) ἐξανέτειλεν (it sprang up) διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) ἔχειν (having) βάθος (depth) γῆς (of soil),
6 ἡλίου (the sun) δὲ (now) ἀνατείλαντος (having risen) ἐκαυματίσθη (they were scorched) καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) ἔχειν (having) ῥίζαν (root) ἐξηράνθη (they withered).
7 Ἄλλα (Others) δὲ (now) ἔπεσεν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰς (the) ἀκάνθας (thorns), καὶ (and) ἀνέβησαν (came up) αἱ (the) ἄκανθαι (thorns) καὶ (and) ἔπνιξαν (choked) αὐτά (them).
8 Ἄλλα (Others) δὲ (now) ἔπεσεν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) γῆν (soil) τὴν (-) καλὴν (good) καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (were giving) καρπόν (fruit), ὃ (some) μὲν (indeed) ἑκατὸν (a hundredfold) ὃ (some) δὲ (now) ἑξήκοντα (sixty) ὃ (some) δὲ (now) τριάκοντα (thirty).
9 Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) ὦτα (ears) ἀκουέτω (let him hear).

10 Καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having come) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) λαλεῖς (do You speak) αὐτοῖς (to them)?
11 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ὅτι (Because) Ὑμῖν (to you⁺) δέδοται (it has been given) γνῶναι (to know) τὰ (the) μυστήρια (mysteries) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), ἐκείνοις (to these) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) δέδοται (it has been given).
12 ὅστις (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἔχει (has), δοθήσεται (it will be given) αὐτῷ (to him) καὶ (and) περισσευθήσεται (he will be in abundance)· ὅστις (whoever) δὲ (now) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has), καὶ (even) ὃ (what) ἔχει (he has) ἀρθήσεται (will be taken away) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him).
13 διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) αὐτοῖς (to them) λαλῶ (I speak),
Ὅτι (Because) βλέποντες (seeing) οὐ (not) βλέπουσιν (do they see)
Καὶ (and) ἀκούοντες (hearing) οὐκ (not) ἀκούουσιν (do they hear) οὐδὲ (nor) συνίουσιν (do they understand).
14 Καὶ (And) ἀναπληροῦται (is fulfilled) αὐτοῖς (in them) ἡ (the) προφητεία (prophecy) Ἠσαΐου (of Isaiah) ἡ (-) λέγουσα (saying)·
Ἀκοῇ (In hearing) ἀκούσετε (you⁺ will hear) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) συνῆτε (understand),
Καὶ (and) βλέποντες (seeing) βλέψετε (you⁺ will see) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἴδητε (perceive).
15 Ἐπαχύνθη (Grew dull) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) τούτου (this),
Καὶ (and) τοῖς (with the) ὠσὶν (ears) βαρέως (barely) ἤκουσαν (they have heard),
Καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐκάμμυσαν (they closed)·

16 Ὑμῶν (Of you⁺) δὲ (however) μακάριοι (blessed) οἱ (are the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) ὅτι (because) βλέπουσιν (they see), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ὦτα (ears) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) ὅτι (because) ἀκούουσιν (they hear).

21 οὐκ (no) ἔχει (he has) δὲ (now) ῥίζαν (root) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (himself) ἀλλὰ (but) πρόσκαιρός (temporary) ἐστιν (is), γενομένης (on having come) δὲ (however) θλίψεως (tribulation) ἢ (or) διωγμοῦ (persecution) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) εὐθὺς (immediately) σκανδαλίζεται (he is caused to stumble).
22 Ὁ (That) δὲ (now) εἰς (among) τὰς (the) ἀκάνθας (thorns) σπαρείς (having been sown), οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἀκούων (hearing), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) μέριμνα (anxiety) τοῦ (-) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (of this) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπάτη (deceit) τοῦ (-) πλούτου (of riches) συμπνίγει (choke) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καὶ (and) ἄκαρπος (unfruitful) γίνεται (it becomes).

53 Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ὅτε (when) ἐτέλεσεν (finished) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὰς (the) παραβολὰς (parables) ταύτας (these), μετῆρεν (that He withdrew) ἐκεῖθεν (from there).
54 καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πατρίδα (hometown) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐδίδασκεν (He was teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue) αὐτῶν (of them), ὥστε (so that) ἐκπλήσσεσθαι (are astonished) αὐτοὺς (they) καὶ (and) λέγειν (are saying)· Πόθεν (From where) τούτῳ (unto this One) ἡ (is the) σοφία (wisdom) αὕτη (this) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (miracles)?
55 οὐχ (Not) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) τοῦ (of the) τέκτονος (carpenter) υἱός (son)? οὐχ (Is not) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λέγεται (called) Μαριὰμ (Mary) καὶ (And) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) αὐτοῦ (of Him) Ἰάκωβος (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) καὶ (and) Σίμων (Simon) καὶ (and) Ἰούδας (Judas)?
56 καὶ (And) αἱ (the) ἀδελφαὶ (sisters) αὐτοῦ (of Him) οὐχὶ (not) πᾶσαι (all) πρὸς (with) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰσιν (are)? πόθεν (from where are) οὖν (then) τούτῳ (unto this One) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all)?
57 καὶ (And) ἐσκανδαλίζοντο (they were taking offense) ἐν (at) αὐτῷ (Him).
Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) προφήτης (a prophet) ἄτιμος (without honor) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πατρίδι (hometown) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) αὐτοῦ (of him).
58 καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐποίησεν (He did) ἐκεῖ (there) δυνάμεις (miracles) πολλὰς (many) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἀπιστίαν (unbelief) αὐτῶν (of them).
