The Burden against Nineveh
(Jonah 1:1–3)
1 מַשָּׂ֖א (The burden) נִֽינְוֵ֑ה (of Nineveh). סֵ֧פֶר (The account) חֲז֛וֹן (of the vision) נַח֖וּם (of Nahum) הָאֶלְקֹשִֽׁי׃ (the Elkoshite).
2 אֵ֣ל (A God) קַנּ֤וֹא (jealous), וְנֹקֵם֙ (and avenging); יְהוָ֔ה (is YHWH)
נֹקֵ֥ם (avenging), יְהוָ֖ה (is YHWH) וּבַ֣עַל (and owner) חֵמָ֑ה (of fury);
נֹקֵ֤ם (avenging) יְהוָה֙ (is YHWH) לְצָרָ֔יו (on His adversaries),
וְנוֹטֵ֥ר (is watching) ה֖וּא (and He) לְאֹיְבָֽיו׃ (for His enemies).
3 יְהֹוָ֗ה (YHWH is) אֶ֤רֶךְ (slow to) אַפַּ֙יִם֙ (to anger),
וּגְדוֹל (and great) כֹּ֔חַ (in power)
וְנַקֵּ֖ה (and acquitting) לֹ֣א (not) יְנַקֶּ֑ה (does He acquit) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH)
בְּסוּפָ֤ה (in the whirlwind) וּבִשְׂעָרָה֙ (and in the storm), דַּרְכּ֔וֹ (His way)
וְעָנָ֖ן (and the clouds are) אֲבַ֥ק (the dust) רַגְלָֽיו׃ (of His feet).
4 גּוֹעֵ֤ר (Laying a rebuke) בַּיָּם֙ (on the sea), וַֽיַּבְּשֵׁ֔הוּ (and He makes it dry),
וְכָל־ (and all) הַנְּהָר֖וֹת (the rivers). הֶֽחֱרִ֑יב (He dries up)
אֻמְלַ֤ל (wither) בָּשָׁן֙ (Bashan) וְכַרְמֶ֔ל (and Carmel),
וּפֶ֥רַח (and the flower) לְבָנ֖וֹן (of Lebanon) אֻמְלָֽל׃ (has withered).
5 הָרִים֙ (The mountains) רָעֲשׁ֣וּ (quake) מִמֶּ֔נּוּ (before Him)
וְהַגְּבָע֖וֹת (and the hills) הִתְמֹגָ֑גוּ (melt),
וַתִּשָּׂ֤א (and lifts up) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the earth) מִפָּנָ֔יו (before His face),
וְתֵבֵ֖ל (and the world), וְכָל־ (and all) יֹ֥שְׁבֵי (those dwelling) בָֽהּ׃ (in it).
6 לִפְנֵ֤י (Before the face) זַעְמוֹ֙ (of His indignation)? מִ֣י (Who) יַֽעֲמ֔וֹד (can stand)
וּמִ֥י (and who) יָק֖וּם (can stand up) בַּחֲר֣וֹן (in the burning) אַפּ֑וֹ (of His anger)?
חֲמָתוֹ֙ (His fury) נִתְּכָ֣ה (is poured out) כָאֵ֔שׁ (like the fire),
וְהַצֻּרִ֖ים (and the rocks) נִתְּצ֥וּ (are torn down) מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ (by Him).
7 ט֣וֹב (Good is), יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)
לְמָע֖וֹז (for a stronghold) בְּי֣וֹם (in the day) צָרָ֑ה (of distress);
וְיֹדֵ֖עַ (and He knows) חֹ֥סֵי (those taking refuge) בֽוֹ׃ (in Him).
8 וּבְשֶׁ֣טֶף (And with a flood) עֹבֵ֔ר (an overflowing)
כָּלָ֖ה (a complete end) יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה (He will make) מְקוֹמָ֑הּ (of her place)
וְאֹיְבָ֖יו (and His enemies) יְרַדֶּף־ (will pursue) חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ (darkness).
9 מַה־ (What) תְּחַשְּׁבוּן֙ (are you⁺ plotting) אֶל־ (against) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)?
כָּלָ֖ה (A complete end); ה֣וּא (He) עֹשֶׂ֑ה (will make)
לֹֽא־ (not) תָק֥וּם (will rise up) פַּעֲמַ֖יִם (a second time) צָרָֽה׃ (distress).
10 כִּ֚י (For) עַד־ (as with) סִירִ֣ים (thorns), סְבֻכִ֔ים (they will be entangled)
וּכְסָבְאָ֖ם (and like those by their drink) סְבוּאִ֑ים (becoming drunk),
אֻ֨כְּל֔וּ (they are consumed) כְּקַ֥שׁ (like stubble) יָבֵ֖שׁ (dry) מָלֵֽא׃ (fully).
11 מִמֵּ֣ךְ (From you) יָצָ֔א (came forth)
חֹשֵׁ֥ב (one devising plots) עַל־ (against) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), רָעָ֑ה (evil)
יֹעֵ֖ץ (a counselor) בְּלִיָּֽעַל׃ס (of wickedness).
12 כֹּ֣ה׀ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH);
אִם־ (Though) שְׁלֵמִים֙ (they are full), וְכֵ֣ן (and likewise) רַבִּ֔ים (numerous),
וְכֵ֥ן (and so) נָגֹ֖זּוּ (will they be cut down), וְעָבָ֑ר (and will pass away).
וְעִ֨נִּתִ֔ךְ (And I have afflicted you)
לֹ֥א (not) אֲעַנֵּ֖ךְ (will I afflict you) עֽוֹד׃ (anymore).
13 וְעַתָּ֕ה (And now) אֶשְׁבֹּ֥ר (I will break off) מֹטֵ֖הוּ (his yoke) מֵֽעָלָ֑יִךְ (from upon you)
וּמוֹסְרֹתַ֖יִךְ (and your bonds) אֲנַתֵּֽק׃ (I will tear away).
14 וְצִוָּ֤ה (And has given a command) עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ (concerning you) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)
לֹֽא־ (Not) יִזָּרַ֥ע (will be sown forth).
מִשִּׁמְךָ֖ (Of your name) ע֑וֹד (any longer)
מִבֵּ֨ית (from the house) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (of your gods) אַכְרִ֨ית (I will cut off)
פֶּ֧סֶל (the carved image) וּמַסֵּכָ֛ה (and the molten image);
אָשִׂ֥ים (I will dig) קִבְרֶ֖ךָ (your grave);
כִּ֥י (for) קַלּֽוֹתָ׃פ (you are of little account).
15 הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold) עַל־ (on) הֶהָרִ֜ים (the mountains)
רַגְלֵ֤י (the feet) מְבַשֵּׂר֙ (of one bringing good nws),
מַשְׁמִ֣יעַ (announcing) שָׁל֔וֹם (peace)!
חָגִּ֧י (Celebrate) יְהוּדָ֛ה (O Judah), חַגַּ֖יִךְ (your feasts),
שַׁלְּמִ֣י (fulfill) נְדָרָ֑יִךְ (your vows).
כִּי֩ (For) לֹ֨א (not) יוֹסִ֥יף (will continue) ע֛וֹד (anymore) לַעֲבוֹר (to pass) בָּ֥ךְ (through you) בְּלִיַּ֖עַל (the worthless one)
כֻּלֹּ֥ה (all of him) נִכְרָֽת׃ (has been cut off).
