The First Census of Israel
(Numbers 26:1–4)
1 וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר (in the Wilderness) סִינַ֖י (of Sinai), בְּאֹ֣הֶל (in the Tent) מוֹעֵ֑ד (of Meeting), בְּאֶחָד֩ (on the first) לַחֹ֨דֶשׁ (month) הַשֵּׁנִ֜י (of the second), בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה (in the year) הַשֵּׁנִ֗ית (second) לְצֵאתָ֛ם (of their going out) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
2 שְׂא֗וּ (Take) אֶת־ (-) רֹאשׁ֙ (a census) כָּל־ (of all) עֲדַ֣ת (the congregation) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans) לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמ֔וֹת (of names), כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֖ר (male) לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָֽם׃ (by their polls).
3 מִבֶּ֨ן (From a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כָּל־ (all) יֹצֵ֥א (who can go) צָבָ֖א (to war) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (in Israel), תִּפְקְד֥וּ (you⁺ shall number) אֹתָ֛ם (them) לְצִבְאֹתָ֖ם (by their armies) אַתָּ֥ה (you) וְאַהֲרֹֽן׃ (and Aaron).
4 וְאִתְּכֶ֣ם (And with you⁺) יִהְי֔וּ (there shall be) אִ֥ישׁ (a man) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) לַמַּטֶּ֑ה (for the tribe), אִ֛ישׁ (each man) רֹ֥אשׁ (the head) לְבֵית־ (for the house) אֲבֹתָ֖יו (of his fathers) הֽוּא׃ (he is).
The Leaders of the Tribes
5 וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (And these are) שְׁמ֣וֹת (the names) הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים (of the men) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יַֽעַמְד֖וּ (shall stand) אִתְּכֶ֑ם (with you⁺):
לִרְאוּבֵ֕ן (From Reuben), אֱלִיצ֖וּר (Elizur) בֶּן־ (son) שְׁדֵיאֽוּר׃ (of Shedeur).
6 לְשִׁמְע֕וֹן (From Simeon), שְׁלֻמִיאֵ֖ל (Shelumiel) בֶּן־ (son) צוּרִֽישַׁדָּֽי׃ (of Zurishaddai).
7 לִֽיהוּדָ֕ה (From Judah), נַחְשׁ֖וֹן (Nahshon) בֶּן־ (son) עַמִּינָדָֽב׃ (of Amminadab).
8 לְיִ֨שָּׂשכָ֔ר (From Issachar), נְתַנְאֵ֖ל (Nethanel) בֶּן־ (son) צוּעָֽר׃ (of Zuar).
9 לִזְבוּלֻ֕ן (From Zebulun), אֱלִיאָ֖ב (Eliab) בֶּן־ (son) חֵלֹֽן׃ (of Helon).
10 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) יוֹסֵ֔ף (of Joseph):
לְאֶפְרַ֕יִם (From Ephraim), אֱלִישָׁמָ֖ע (Elishama) בֶּן־ (son) עַמִּיה֑וּד (of Ammihud),
לִמְנַשֶּׁ֕ה (from Manasseh), גַּמְלִיאֵ֖ל (Gamaliel) בֶּן־ (son) פְּדָהצֽוּר׃ (of Pedahzur).
11 לְבִ֨נְיָמִ֔ן (From Benjamin), אֲבִידָ֖ן (Abidan) בֶּן־ (son) גִּדְעֹנִֽי׃ (of Gideoni).
12 לְדָ֕ן (From Dan), אֲחִיעֶ֖זֶר (Ahiezer) בֶּן־ (son) עַמִּֽישַׁדָּֽי׃ (of Ammishaddai).
13 לְאָשֵׁ֕ר (From Asher), פַּגְעִיאֵ֖ל (Pagiel) בֶּן־ (son) עָכְרָֽן׃ (of Ocran).
14 לְגָ֕ד (From Gad), אֶלְיָסָ֖ף (Eliasaph) בֶּן־ (son) דְּעוּאֵֽל׃ (of Deuel).
15 לְנַ֨פְתָּלִ֔י (From Naphtali), אֲחִירַ֖ע (Ahira) בֶּן־ (son) עֵינָֽן׃ (of Enan).
16 אֵ֚לֶּה (These) קְרִיאֵי (were chosen) הָעֵדָ֔ה (from the congregation); נְשִׂיאֵ֖י (leaders) מַטּ֣וֹת (of the tribes) אֲבוֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), רָאשֵׁ֛י (heads) אַלְפֵ֥י (of the thousands) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (in Israel), הֵֽם׃ (they were).
The Number of every Tribe
17 וַיִּקַּ֥ח (And took) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) וְאַהֲרֹ֑ן (and Aaron) אֵ֚ת (-) הָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים (the men) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) נִקְּב֖וּ (had been mentioned) בְּשֵׁמֽוֹת׃ (by name),
18 וְאֵ֨ת (and) כָּל־ (all) הָעֵדָ֜ה (the congregation) הִקְהִ֗ילוּ (they assembled) בְּאֶחָד֙ (on the first day)) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) הַשֵּׁנִ֔י (second), וַיִּתְיַֽלְד֥וּ (and they recited their ancestry) עַל־ (by) מִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמ֗וֹת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (of twenty) שָׁנָ֛ה (years) וָמַ֖עְלָה (and above), לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָֽם׃ (by their polls),
19 כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (Moses).
וַֽיִּפְקְדֵ֖ם (And he numbered them) בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר (in the Wilderness) סִינָֽי׃פ (of Sinai).
20 וַיִּהְי֤וּ (And) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) רְאוּבֵן֙ (of Reuben) בְּכֹ֣ר (oldest son) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans) לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֤ר (by the number) שֵׁמוֹת֙ (of names) לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָ֔ם (individually), כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֗ר (male) מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),
21 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) רְאוּבֵ֑ן (of Reuben) שִׁשָּׁ֧ה (were six) וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים (and forty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ (and five) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).
22 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) שִׁמְע֔וֹן (of Simeon), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (according to their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), פְּקֻדָ֗יו (numbered) בְּמִסְפַּ֤ר (by the number) שֵׁמוֹת֙ (of names) לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָ֔ם (individually), כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֗ר (male) מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),
23 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) שִׁמְע֑וֹן (of Simeon) תִּשְׁעָ֧ה (were nine) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים (and fifty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וּשְׁלֹ֥שׁ (and three) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).
24 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) גָ֔ד (of Gad), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמ֗וֹת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),
25 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) גָ֑ד (of Gad) חֲמִשָּׁ֤ה (were five) וְאַרְבָּעִים֙ (and forty) אֶ֔לֶף (thousand) וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) וַחֲמִשִּֽׁים׃פ (and fifty).
26 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמֹ֗ת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),
27 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah) אַרְבָּעָ֧ה (were four) וְשִׁבְעִ֛ים (and seventy) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).
28 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) יִשָּׂשכָ֔ר (of Issachar), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמֹ֗ת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),

30 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) זְבוּלֻ֔ן (of Zebulun), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמֹ֗ת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),

33 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (of Ephraim) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (were forty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ (and five) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).
34 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמ֗וֹת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),
35 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה (of Manasseh) שְׁנַ֧יִם (were two) וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים (and thirty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וּמָאתָֽיִם׃פ (and two hundred).
36 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) בִנְיָמִ֔ן (of Benjamin), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמֹ֗ת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),
37 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) בִנְיָמִ֑ן (of Benjamin) חֲמִשָּׁ֧ה (were five) וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים (and thirty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וְאַרְבַּ֥ע (and four) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).
38 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) דָ֔ן (of Dan), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמֹ֗ת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),
39 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) דָ֑ן (of Dan) שְׁנַ֧יִם (were two) וְשִׁשִּׁ֛ים (and sixty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וּשְׁבַ֥ע (and seven) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).
40 לִבְנֵ֣י (From the sons) אָשֵׁ֔ר (of Asher), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמֹ֗ת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),
41 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) אָשֵׁ֑ר (of Asher) אֶחָ֧ד (were one) וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים (and forty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ (and five) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).
42 בְּנֵ֣י (From the sons) נַפְתָּלִ֔י (of Naphtali), תּוֹלְדֹתָ֥ם (their genealogies), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (by their clans), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר (by the number) שֵׁמֹ֗ת (of names), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כֹּ֖ל (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָֽא׃ (to the host),
43 פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם (those numbered) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) נַפְתָּלִ֑י (of Naphtali) שְׁלֹשָׁ֧ה (were three) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים (and fifty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וְאַרְבַּ֥ע (and four) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).
44 אֵ֣לֶּה (These are) הַפְּקֻדִ֡ים (the ones who were numbered)— אֲשֶׁר֩ (whom) פָּקַ֨ד (numbered) מֹשֶׁ֤ה (Moses) וְאַהֲרֹן֙ (and Aaron)— וּנְשִׂיאֵ֣י (and the princes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), שְׁנֵ֥ים (two) עָשָׂ֖ר (and ten) אִ֑ישׁ (men), אִישׁ־ (each) אֶחָ֥ד (one) לְבֵית־ (for the house) אֲבֹתָ֖יו (of his father) הָיֽוּ׃ (was).
45 וַיִּֽהְי֛וּ (And) כָּל־ (all) פְּקוּדֵ֥י (who were numbered) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), כָּל־ (everyone) יֹצֵ֥א (going out) צָבָ֖א (to the host) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (in Israel),
46 וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ (and were) כָּל־ (all) הַפְּקֻדִ֔ים (who were numbered) שֵׁשׁ־ (six) מֵא֥וֹת (hundred) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (and three) אֲלָפִ֑ים (thousand) וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ (and five) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) וַחֲמִשִּֽׁים׃ (and fifty).
The Exemption of the Levites
47 וְהַלְוִיִּ֖ם (And the Levites) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (by the tribe) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers) לֹ֥א (not) הָתְפָּקְד֖וּ (were numbered) בְּתוֹכָֽם׃פ (in their midst).
48 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And for had spoken) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
49 אַ֣ךְ (Only) אֶת־ (-) מַטֵּ֤ה (the tribe) לֵוִי֙ (of Levi) לֹ֣א (not) תִפְקֹ֔ד (you shall number), וְאֶת־ (and) רֹאשָׁ֖ם (a census of them) לֹ֣א (not) תִשָּׂ֑א (shall you take) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).
50 וְאַתָּ֡ה (And you) הַפְקֵ֣ד (shall appoint) אֶת־ (-) הַלְוִיִּם֩ (the Levites) עַל־ (over) מִשְׁכַּ֨ן (the tabernacle) הָעֵדֻ֜ת (of the Testimony), וְעַ֣ל (and over) כָּל־ (all) כֵּלָיו֮ (its furnishings), וְעַ֣ל (and over) כָּל־ (all things) אֲשֶׁר־ (that belong) לוֹ֒ (to it). הֵ֜מָּה (They) יִשְׂא֤וּ (shall carry) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ (the tabernacle) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) כֵּלָ֔יו (its furnishings), וְהֵ֖ם (and they) יְשָׁרְתֻ֑הוּ (shall attend to it), וְסָבִ֥יב (and around) לַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן (the tabernacle) יַחֲנֽוּ׃ (they shall camp).
51 וּבִנְסֹ֣עַ (And in the going forward) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֗ן (of the tabernacle), יוֹרִ֤ידוּ (shall take down) אֹתוֹ֙ (it) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites). וּבַחֲנֹת֙ (And in the encamping) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן (of the tabernacle), יָקִ֥ימוּ (shall set up) אֹת֖וֹ (it) הַלְוִיִּ֑ם (the Levites). וְהַזָּ֥ר (And the outsider) הַקָּרֵ֖ב (who comes near) יוּמָֽת׃ (shall be put to death).
52 וְחָנ֖וּ (And shall encamp) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), אִ֧ישׁ (each man) עַֽל־ (by) מַחֲנֵ֛הוּ (his own camp), וְאִ֥ישׁ (and each man) עַל־ (by) דִּגְל֖וֹ (his own standard), לְצִבְאֹתָֽם׃ (by their hosts).
53 וְהַלְוִיִּ֞ם (And the Levites) יַחֲנ֤וּ (shall camp) סָבִיב֙ (around) לְמִשְׁכַּ֣ן (the tabernacle) הָעֵדֻ֔ת (of the Testimony), וְלֹֽא־ (that not) יִהְיֶ֣ה (there may be) קֶ֔צֶף (wrath) עַל־ (on) עֲדַ֖ת (the congregation) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). וְשָׁמְרוּ֙ (And shall keep) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת (the charge) מִשְׁכַּ֥ן (of the tabernacle) הָעֵדֽוּת׃ (of the Testimony).
54 וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ (And did) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) כְּ֠כֹל (according to all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) צִוָּ֧ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses); כֵּ֥ן (so) עָשֽׂוּ׃פ (they did).
