Rules about Valuations

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  דַּבֵּ֞ר (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them), אִ֕ישׁ (A man) כִּ֥י (when) יַפְלִ֖א (he makes wonderful) נֶ֑דֶר (by a vow) בְּעֶרְכְּךָ֥ (in your valuation) נְפָשֹׁ֖ת (of souls) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH), 3  וְהָיָ֤ה (and if is) עֶרְכְּךָ֙ (your valuation) הַזָּכָ֔ר (of a male) מִבֶּן֙ (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (of twenty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) וְעַ֖ד (and up to) בֶּן־ (old) שִׁשִּׁ֣ים (sixty) שָׁנָ֑ה (years), וְהָיָ֣ה (and shall be) עֶרְכְּךָ֗ (your valuation) חֲמִשִּׁ֛ים (fifty) שֶׁ֥קֶל (shekels) כֶּ֖סֶף (of silver), בְּשֶׁ֥קֶל (according to the shekel) הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃ (of the sanctuary). 4  וְאִם־ (And if) נְקֵבָ֖ה (a female) הִ֑וא (it is), וְהָיָ֥ה (and shall be) עֶרְכְּךָ֖ (your valuation) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (thirty) שָֽׁקֶל׃ (shekels). 5  וְאִ֨ם (And if) מִבֶּן־ (from a son) חָמֵ֜שׁ (of five) שָׁנִ֗ים (years) וְעַד֙ (and up to) בֶּן־ (old) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (twenty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years), וְהָיָ֧ה (then shall be) עֶרְכְּךָ֛ (your valuation) הַזָּכָ֖ר (for the male) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (twenty) שְׁקָלִ֑ים (shekels), וְלַנְּקֵבָ֖ה (and for the female) עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת (ten) שְׁקָלִֽים׃ (shekels).

6  וְאִ֣ם (And if) מִבֶּן־ (from a son) חֹ֗דֶשׁ (of a month) וְעַד֙ (and up to) בֶּן־ (old) חָמֵ֣שׁ (five) שָׁנִ֔ים (years), וְהָיָ֤ה (then shall be) עֶרְכְּךָ֙ (your valuation) הַזָּכָ֔ר (for the male) חֲמִשָּׁ֥ה (five) שְׁקָלִ֖ים (shekels) כָּ֑סֶף (of silver), וְלַנְּקֵבָ֣ה (and for the female) עֶרְכְּךָ֔ (your valuation is) שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (three) שְׁקָלִ֖ים (shekels) כָּֽסֶף׃ (of silver). 7  וְ֠אִם (And if) מִבֶּן־ (from a son) שִׁשִּׁ֨ים (of sixty) שָׁנָ֤ה (years) וָמַ֙עְלָה֙ (and above), אִם־ (if) זָכָ֔ר (it is a male), וְהָיָ֣ה (and shall be) עֶרְכְּךָ֔ (your valuation) חֲמִשָּׁ֥ה (five) עָשָׂ֖ר (and ten) שָׁ֑קֶל (shekels), וְלַנְּקֵבָ֖ה (and for the female) עֲשָׂרָ֥ה (ten) שְׁקָלִֽים׃ (shekels). 8  וְאִם־ (And if) מָ֥ךְ (is poorer) הוּא֙ (he) מֵֽעֶרְכֶּ֔ךָ (than your valuation), וְהֶֽעֱמִידוֹ֙ (then he shall present him) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), וְהֶעֱרִ֥יךְ (and shall value) אֹת֖וֹ (him) הַכֹּהֵ֑ן (the priest) עַל־ (according to) פִּ֗י (mouth); אֲשֶׁ֤ר (after) תַּשִּׂיג֙ (the reach) יַ֣ד (of the hand) הַנֹּדֵ֔ר (who vowed) יַעֲרִיכֶ֖נּוּ (shall value him) הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ס (the priest).

9  וְאִם־ (And if) בְּהֵמָ֔ה (it is an animal) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יַקְרִ֧יבוּ (men may bring) מִמֶּ֛נָּה (-) קָרְבָּ֖ן (as an offering) לַֽיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH), כֹּל֩ (all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יִתֵּ֥ן (he gives) מִמֶּ֛נּוּ (of such) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) קֹּֽדֶשׁ׃ (holy). 10  לֹ֣א (Not) יַחֲלִיפֶ֗נּוּ (he shall substitute it) וְלֹֽא־ (or) יָמִ֥יר (exchange) אֹת֛וֹ (it), ט֥וֹב (good) בְּרָ֖ע (for bad) אוֹ־ (or) רַ֣ע (bad) בְּט֑וֹב (for good). וְאִם־ (And if) הָמֵ֨ר (substituting) יָמִ֤יר (he substitutes) בְּהֵמָה֙ (animal) בִּבְהֵמָ֔ה (for animal), וְהָֽיָה־ (and) ה֥וּא (it) וּתְמוּרָת֖וֹ (and the one exchanged for it) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) קֹּֽדֶשׁ׃ (holy).

11  וְאִם֙ (And if it is) כָּל־ (any) בְּהֵמָ֣ה (animal) טְמֵאָ֔ה (unclean), אֲ֠שֶׁר (which) לֹא־ (not) יַקְרִ֧יבוּ (they do offer) מִמֶּ֛נָּה (-) קָרְבָּ֖ן (as a sacrifice) לַֽיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH), וְהֶֽעֱמִ֥יד (and he shall present) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה (the animal) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ (the priest). 12  וְהֶעֱרִ֤יךְ (And shall set a value) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest) אֹתָ֔הּ (for it) בֵּ֥ין (whether) ט֖וֹב (it is good) וּבֵ֣ין (or) רָ֑ע (bad); כְּעֶרְכְּךָ֥ (as you value it), הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest) כֵּ֥ן (so) יִהְיֶֽה׃ (shall set it). 13  וְאִם־ (But if) גָּאֹ֖ל (redeeming) יִגְאָלֶ֑נָּה (he redeems it), וְיָסַ֥ף (and he must add) חֲמִישִׁת֖וֹ (a fifth) עַל־ (to) עֶרְכֶּֽךָ׃ (your valuation).

14  וְאִ֗ישׁ (And a man) כִּֽי־ (when) יַקְדִּ֨שׁ (he dedicates) אֶת־ (-) בֵּית֥וֹ (his house) קֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ (to be holy) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), וְהֶעֱרִיכוֹ֙ (then shall set a value for it) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest) בֵּ֥ין (whether) ט֖וֹב (it is good) וּבֵ֣ין (or) רָ֑ע (bad). כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (As) יַעֲרִ֥יךְ (values) אֹת֛וֹ (it) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest), כֵּ֥ן (so) יָקֽוּם׃ (it shall stand). 15  וְאִ֨ם־ (And if) הַמַּקְדִּ֔ישׁ (he who dedicated it) יִגְאַ֖ל (would redeem) אֶת־ (-) בֵּית֑וֹ (his house), וְ֠יָסַף (then he must add) חֲמִישִׁ֧ית (a fifth) כֶּֽסֶף־ (of the silver) עֶרְכְּךָ֛ (of your valuation) עָלָ֖יו (to it), וְהָ֥יָה (and it shall be) לֽוֹ׃ (his).

16  וְאִ֣ם׀ (And if) מִשְּׂדֵ֣ה (part of a field) אֲחֻזָּת֗וֹ (of his possession) יַקְדִּ֥ישׁ (dedicates) אִישׁ֙ (a man) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), וְהָיָ֥ה (and shall be) עֶרְכְּךָ֖ (your valuation) לְפִ֣י (according to) זַרְע֑וֹ (the seed for it) זֶ֚רַע (seed) חֹ֣מֶר (a homer) שְׂעֹרִ֔ים (of barley) בַּחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים (at fifty) שֶׁ֥קֶל (shekels) כָּֽסֶף׃ (of silver). 17  אִם־ (If) מִשְּׁנַ֥ת (in the Year) הַיֹּבֵ֖ל (of the Jubilee) יַקְדִּ֣ישׁ (he dedicates) שָׂדֵ֑הוּ (his field), כְּעֶרְכְּךָ֖ (according to your valuation) יָקֽוּם׃ (it shall stand).

18  וְאִם־ (But if) אַחַ֣ר (after) הַיֹּבֵל֮ (the Jubilee) יַקְדִּ֣ישׁ (he dedicates) שָׂדֵהוּ֒ (his field), וְחִשַּׁב־ (then shall reckon due) ל֨וֹ (to him) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֗סֶף (the silver) עַל־ (according to) פִּ֤י (-) הַשָּׁנִים֙ (the years) הַנּ֣וֹתָרֹ֔ת (that remain) עַ֖ד (until) שְׁנַ֣ת (the Year) הַיֹּבֵ֑ל (of the Jubilee), וְנִגְרַ֖ע (and it shall be deducted) מֵֽעֶרְכֶּֽךָ׃ (from your valuation). 19  וְאִם־ (And if) גָּאֹ֤ל (redeeming) יִגְאַל֙ (redeems) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה (the field) הַמַּקְדִּ֖ישׁ (he who dedicates) אֹת֑וֹ (it), וְ֠יָסַף (and he must add) חֲמִשִׁ֧ית (a fifth) כֶּֽסֶף־ (of the silver) עֶרְכְּךָ֛ (of your valuation) עָלָ֖יו (to it), וְקָ֥ם (and it shall belong) לֽוֹ׃ (to him).

20  וְאִם־ (But if) לֹ֤א (not) יִגְאַל֙ (he does want to redeem) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה (the field), וְאִם־ (or if) מָכַ֥ר (he has sold) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (the field) לְאִ֣ישׁ (to man) אַחֵ֑ר (another), לֹ֥א (not) יִגָּאֵ֖ל (it shall be redeemed) עֽוֹד׃ (anymore). 21  וְהָיָ֨ה (And shall be) הַשָּׂדֶ֜ה (the field), בְּצֵאת֣וֹ (when it is released) בַיֹּבֵ֗ל (in the Jubilee), קֹ֛דֶשׁ (holy) לַֽיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH), כִּשְׂדֵ֣ה (as a field) הַחֵ֑רֶם (devoted); לַכֹּהֵ֖ן (of the priest) תִּהְיֶ֥ה (it shall be) אֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃ (the possession).

22  וְאִם֙ (And if) אֶת־ (-) שְׂדֵ֣ה (a field) מִקְנָת֔וֹ (which he has bought), אֲשֶׁ֕ר (which is) לֹ֖א (not) מִשְּׂדֵ֣ה (the field) אֲחֻזָּת֑וֹ (of his possession), יַקְדִּ֖ישׁ (one dedicates) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH), 23  וְחִשַּׁב־ (then shall reckon) ל֣וֹ (to him) הַכֹּהֵ֗ן (the priest) אֵ֚ת (-) מִכְסַ֣ת (the worth) הָֽעֶרְכְּךָ֔ (of your valuation) עַ֖ד (up to) שְׁנַ֣ת (the Year) הַיֹּבֵ֑ל (of the Jubilee), וְנָתַ֤ן (and he shall give) אֶת־ (-) הָעֶרְכְּךָ֙ (your valuation) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on day) הַה֔וּא (that) קֹ֖דֶשׁ (as a holy thing) לַיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH). 24  בִּשְׁנַ֤ת (In the Year) הַיּוֹבֵל֙ (of the Jubilee) יָשׁ֣וּב (shall return) הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה (the field) לַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (from whom) קָנָ֖הוּ (it was bought) מֵאִתּ֑וֹ (to him), לַאֲשֶׁר־ (to whom) ל֖וֹ (-) אֲחֻזַּ֥ת (is the possession) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land). 25  וְכָל־ (And all) עֶרְכְּךָ֔ (your valuations) יִהְיֶ֖ה (shall be) בְּשֶׁ֣קֶל (according to the shekel) הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ (of the sanctuary); עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) גֵּרָ֖ה (gerahs) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) הַשָּֽׁקֶל׃ס (to the shekel).

26  אַךְ־ (But) בְּכ֞וֹר (the firstborn), אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְבֻכַּ֤ר (firstborn) לַֽיהוָה֙ (to YHWH) בִּבְהֵמָ֔ה (of the animals), לֹֽא־ (not) יַקְדִּ֥ישׁ (shall dedicate) אִ֖ישׁ (man) אֹת֑וֹ (-), אִם־ (whether it is) שׁ֣וֹר (an ox) אִם־ (or) שֶׂ֔ה (sheep); לַֽיהוָ֖ה (belongs to YHWH) הֽוּא׃ (it is). 27  וְאִ֨ם (And if) בַּבְּהֵמָ֤ה (an animal) הַטְּמֵאָה֙ (unclean is), וּפָדָ֣ה (and he shall redeem it) בְעֶרְכֶּ֔ךָ (according to your valuation), וְיָסַ֥ף (and shall add) חֲמִשִׁת֖וֹ (a fifth) עָלָ֑יו (to it). וְאִם־ (Or if) לֹ֥א (not) יִגָּאֵ֖ל (it is redeemed), וְנִמְכַּ֥ר (and it shall be sold) בְּעֶרְכֶּֽךָ׃ (according to your valuation).

28  אַךְ־ (Nevertheless) כָּל־ (any) חֵ֡רֶם (devoted thing) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יַחֲרִם֩ (may devote) אִ֨ישׁ (a man) לַֽיהוָ֜ה (to YHWH) מִכָּל־ (of all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) ל֗וֹ (unto him), מֵאָדָ֤ם (man) וּבְהֵמָה֙ (and beast), וּמִשְּׂדֵ֣ה (or the field) אֲחֻזָּת֔וֹ (of his possession), לֹ֥א (not) יִמָּכֵ֖ר (shall be sold) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יִגָּאֵ֑ל (it shall be redeemed). כָּל־ (Every) חֵ֕רֶם (devoted thing), קֹֽדֶשׁ־ (holy) קָֽדָשִׁ֥ים (of holies) ה֖וּא (it is) לַיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH).

29  כָּל־ (Any) חֵ֗רֶם (devoted thing) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) יָחֳרַ֛ם (is devoted to destruction) מִן־ (among) הָאָדָ֖ם (men) לֹ֣א (not) יִפָּדֶ֑ה (shall be redeemed); מ֖וֹת (dying) יוּמָֽת׃ (it must be put to death).

Instruction on Tithes
(Deuteronomy 14:22–29; Deuteronomy 26:1–15; Nehemiah 13:10–14)

30  וְכָל־ (And all) מַעְשַׂ֨ר (the tithe) הָאָ֜רֶץ (of the land), מִזֶּ֤רַע (whether of the seed) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (of the land) מִפְּרִ֣י (or of the fruit) הָעֵ֔ץ (of the tree), לַיהוָ֖ה (is to YHWH); ה֑וּא (it is) קֹ֖דֶשׁ (holy) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH). 31  וְאִם־ (And if) גָּאֹ֥ל (redeeming) יִגְאַ֛ל (redeems) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) מִמַּֽעַשְׂר֑וֹ (of his tithes), חֲמִשִׁית֖וֹ (a fifth) יֹסֵ֥ף (he shall add) עָלָֽיו׃ (to it).

32  וְכָל־ (And concerning) מַעְשַׂ֤ר (the tithe) בָּקָר֙ (of the herd) וָצֹ֔אן (or the flock), כֹּ֥ל (of) אֲשֶׁר־ (whatever) יַעֲבֹ֖ר (passes) תַּ֣חַת (under) הַשָּׁ֑בֶט (the rod), הָֽעֲשִׂירִ֕י (the tenth) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) קֹּ֖דֶשׁ (holy) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH). 33  לֹ֧א (Not) יְבַקֵּ֛ר (he shall inquire) בֵּֽין־ (whether) ט֥וֹב (it is good) לָרַ֖ע (or bad), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יְמִירֶ֑נּוּ (shall he exchange it). וְאִם־ (And if) הָמֵ֣ר (substituting) יְמִירֶ֔נּוּ (he substitutes), וְהָֽיָה־ (then it shall be) ה֧וּא (that it) וּתְמוּרָת֛וֹ (and the one exchanged for it) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) קֹ֖דֶשׁ (holy); לֹ֥א (not) יִגָּאֵֽל׃ (it shall be redeemed).

34  אֵ֣לֶּה (These are) הַמִּצְוֺ֗ת (the commandments) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) צִוָּ֧ה (commanded) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) אֶל־ (for) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) בְּהַ֖ר (on Mount) סִינָֽי׃ (Sinai).
