The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years, until that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.

Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.
So tell them: As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say.
Your bodies will fall in this wilderness--all who were numbered in the census, everyone twenty years of age or older--because you have grumbled against Me.
Among all these, however, there was not one who had been registered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they numbered the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.
For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
When the LORD heard your words, He grew angry and swore an oath, saying,
"Not one of the men of this evil generation shall see the good land I swore to give your fathers,
For this reason you stayed in Kadesh for a long time--a very long time.
Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these forty years, and you have lacked nothing.
Now arise and cross over the Brook of Zered." So we crossed over the Brook of Zered.
Now when all the fighting men among the people had died,
Now this is why Joshua circumcised them: All those who came out of Egypt--all the men of war--had died on the journey in the wilderness after they had left Egypt.
For the Israelites had wandered in the wilderness forty years, until all the nation's men of war who had come out of Egypt had died, since they did not obey the LORD. So the LORD vowed never to let them see the land He had sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
So your fathers cried out to the LORD, and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, over whom He brought the sea and engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.
Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.
So He raised His hand and swore to cast them down in the wilderness,
