We will go with our young and old,
This phrase emphasizes the inclusivity of the Israelites' departure from Egypt. It highlights the communal aspect of worship and the importance of every generation in the covenant community. The mention of both young and old underscores the collective identity of the Israelites as God's chosen people, where every member, regardless of age, is integral to the fulfillment of God's promises. This inclusivity can be seen as a precursor to the New Testament teaching that the Kingdom of God is open to all who believe, as seen in passages like Acts 2:39.

Moses replied.
Moses, as the leader and prophet, acts as the spokesperson for God and the Israelites. His role is pivotal in the narrative of the Exodus, serving as a mediator between God and Pharaoh. This reflects the typology of Moses as a precursor to Christ, who is the ultimate mediator between God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5). Moses' leadership is characterized by obedience to God's commands and a deep commitment to the liberation of his people.

We will go with our sons and daughters,
The inclusion of sons and daughters signifies the importance of family in the worship of God. It reflects the biblical principle that faith and religious practices are to be passed down through generations, as seen in Deuteronomy 6:6-7. This also highlights the continuity of God's covenant promises, which are intended for future generations, ensuring the perpetuation of faith and obedience to God.

and with our flocks and herds,
The mention of flocks and herds indicates the necessity of these animals for sacrificial offerings, which were central to Israelite worship. This reflects the cultural and religious practices of the time, where sacrifices were a means of atonement and communion with God. The presence of flocks and herds also signifies the economic and social aspects of the Israelites' lives, as livestock were a primary source of wealth and sustenance.

for we must hold a feast to the LORD.
This phrase underscores the purpose of the Israelites' departure: to worship and celebrate a feast to the LORD. The feast likely refers to the Passover, which commemorates God's deliverance of Israel from Egypt. This act of worship is a response to God's mighty works and a fulfillment of His command. The concept of feasting in the presence of the LORD is a recurring theme in Scripture, symbolizing fellowship, gratitude, and the acknowledgment of God's provision and salvation.

What Does Exodus 10:9 Mean
We will go with our young and old

- Moses leaves no room for partial obedience. Everyone—from the eldest patriarch to the newest infant—is included in God’s call to worship (cf. Deuteronomy 29:10–12; Psalm 148:12–13).

- The verse refutes Pharaoh’s earlier demand to limit the worshippers (Exodus 10:8–11). God’s people cannot accept a “half-measure” liberty; salvation is total.

- Family solidarity under God’s covenant is at stake. As later reaffirmed in Joshua 24:15, the entire household is summoned to serve the LORD.

We will go with our sons and daughters

- Children are not spectators; they are participants in covenant life (Joel 2:16; Deuteronomy 6:6–7).

- Involving sons and daughters ensures generational transmission of faith (Psalm 78:4–7).

- Moses’ insistence models parental responsibility: worship and instruction belong together (Proverbs 22:6).

And with our flocks and herds

- Livestock represent livelihood and sacrifice. True worship costs something (2 Samuel 24:24; Hebrews 13:16).

- Holding back the animals would nullify the required offerings (Exodus 12:5; Leviticus 1:2).

- Pharaoh’s later compromise—“Only your flocks and herds must stay behind” (Exodus 10:24)—is rejected because possession and worship are inseparable; God claims all resources of His people.

For we must hold a feast to the LORD

- “Must” signals divine mandate, not personal preference (Exodus 5:1).

- The feast anticipates Passover (Exodus 12), foreshadowing redemption through blood and deliverance.

- Corporate celebration cements identity: redeemed people gather around God’s table (Leviticus 23:1–4; 1 Corinthians 5:7–8).

summary

Exodus 10:9 shows Moses refusing any partial release. Every person—young, old, sons, daughters—and every possession—flocks, herds—must go, because worship demands total consecration. The verse calls believers to bring family, resources, and hearts wholly to the Lord, rejecting any compromise that diminishes full obedience.

(9) With our sons and with our daughters . . . for we must hold a feast.--It was customary in Egypt for children to join in festivals (Herod. ii. 60).

With our flocks and with our herds.--The family of Jacob brought numerous flocks and herds into Egypt (Genesis 47:1). These had, no doubt, increased, notwithstanding the oppression, and at the time of the Exodus must have been very numerous. The requirement to "take a lamb for an house" (Exodus 12:2) on the institution of the Passover involved the killing, on a single day, of 200,000 lambs. Even after this the flocks and herds which went out with them (Exodus 12:38) were "very much cattle."

Verse 9. - And Moses said, We will go with our young, and with our old. This statement was at any rate unambiguous, and no doubt could henceforth be even pretended as to what the demand was. The whole nation, with its flocks and herds, was to take its departure, since a feast was to be held in which all the nation ought to participate. The Egyptians were accustomed to the attendance of children at national festivals (Herod. 2:60).
