Ezra 3
1. The altar is set up
4. Offerings renewed
7. Workmen employed in preparing materials
8. The foundations of the temple are laid in great joy and mourning

After that, they presented the regular burnt offerings
The phrase "after that" indicates a sequence of events following the completion of the altar's construction in Ezra 3:3. The "regular burnt offerings" refer to the daily sacrifices commanded in the Law of Moses (Exodus 29:38-42). These offerings were a central part of Israelite worship, symbolizing atonement and dedication to God. The reestablishment of these offerings signifies a return to covenant faithfulness and the restoration of worship practices after the Babylonian exile.

and those for New Moons
The New Moon offerings were part of the monthly religious observances (Numbers 28:11-15). The New Moon marked the beginning of the Hebrew month and was a time for special sacrifices and worship. This practice highlights the Israelites' commitment to observing God's appointed times and maintaining a rhythm of worship that acknowledges God's sovereignty over time.

and for all the appointed sacred feasts of the LORD
The "appointed sacred feasts" include Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles, among others (Leviticus 23). These feasts were times of communal gathering, remembrance, and celebration of God's deliverance and provision. By observing these feasts, the Israelites reaffirmed their identity as God's chosen people and their reliance on His promises.

as well as all the freewill offerings brought to the LORD
Freewill offerings were voluntary sacrifices given out of gratitude and devotion (Leviticus 22:18-23). Unlike the mandatory offerings, these were expressions of personal worship and thanksgiving. The inclusion of freewill offerings indicates a heartfelt response to God's grace and a desire to honor Him beyond the required rituals. This reflects the principle that true worship involves both obedience and a willing heart.

Restoration of Worship
The rebuilding of the altar and the resumption of sacrifices signify a return to proper worship and obedience to God's commands. This teaches us the importance of prioritizing worship in our lives.

Community and Commitment
The collective effort of the Israelites to restore worship practices highlights the power of community in pursuing spiritual goals. We are reminded to engage with our faith communities in shared worship and service.

Diversity of Offerings
The variety of offerings (burnt, New Moon, freewill) reflects the multifaceted nature of worship, involving regular, special, and voluntary acts of devotion. This encourages us to consider how we can offer diverse forms of worship in our own lives.

Faithfulness to God's Commands
The Israelites' adherence to the appointed feasts and offerings demonstrates their commitment to God's law. We are called to be faithful in our obedience to God's Word.

Symbolism of Sacrifice
The physical sacrifices point to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. As Christians, we are reminded of the significance of Christ's sacrifice and our response to it through living a life of worship.

What Does Ezra 3:5 Mean
After that

The events in Ezra 3:5 unfold immediately following the reconstruction of the altar and the resumption of daily worship (Ezra 3:2-4). Having first restored the place of sacrifice, the returned exiles now move ahead in obedience, demonstrating that right relationship with God precedes sustained service. This same sequence—altar first, then offerings—mirrors earlier covenant renewals (Exodus 40:29-32; 2 Chronicles 15:8-11), underscoring that worship built on God’s prescribed order invites His favor and protection (Psalm 51:19).

they presented the regular burnt offerings

Daily morning and evening sacrifices were the heartbeat of Israel’s worship (Numbers 28:3-8). By reinstating these “regular” offerings, the people declare that ordinary days belong to God just as much as special occasions. Each burnt offering, wholly consumed on the altar, symbolized complete devotion (Leviticus 1:9). The exiles, freshly delivered from captivity, now display total surrender, echoing Abraham’s readiness on Mount Moriah (Genesis 22:9-14) and pointing ahead to Christ’s perfect self-offering (Ephesians 5:2).

and those for New Moons

Monthly ceremonies marked the passing of time under God’s sovereignty (Numbers 28:11-15). Restoring New Moon sacrifices re-centers their calendar around the Lord rather than Persian rule. Psalm 81:3 pictures the trumpet blast at each new month, reminding the nation that every cycle of life begins with worship. By honoring New Moons, the community publicly affirms God’s ongoing provision in agriculture, commerce, and family rhythms (Isaiah 66:22-23).

and for all the appointed sacred feasts of the LORD

The yearly festivals—Passover, Unleavened Bread, Weeks, Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Tabernacles (Leviticus 23)—retell God’s saving acts and future promises. Observing them again restores corporate memory and national identity. For example:

• Passover proclaims redemption from bondage (Exodus 12:26-27).

• Weeks celebrates firstfruits and anticipates Pentecost’s outpouring (Acts 2:1-4).

• Tabernacles looks back to wilderness provision and ahead to ultimate rest (John 7:37-39; Zechariah 14:16-19).

Each feast knits the community together around God’s faithfulness, shielding them from assimilation into surrounding cultures (Deuteronomy 16:14-17).

as well as all the freewill offerings brought to the LORD

Beyond required sacrifices, individuals brought voluntary gifts expressing gratitude, vows, or spontaneous joy (Leviticus 22:18-23; Deuteronomy 12:6). Freewill offerings reveal hearts stirred by grace rather than compulsion, echoing the generosity seen when the tabernacle was built (Exodus 35:29). Their inclusion shows that true revival produces both obedience to commands and overflow of personal devotion (2 Corinthians 9:7; Philippians 4:18).

summary

Ezra 3:5 records a fully restored rhythm of worship: daily, monthly, yearly, and voluntary offerings alike. The returned exiles align every segment of time and every level of giving with the Lord who rescued them. Their example calls believers to acknowledge God in ordinary routines, fixed seasons, communal celebrations, and spontaneous acts of love, affirming that He is worthy of all.

(5) Both of the new moons.--And of the new moons. The whole verse is general and anticipatory. The new moons, the three feasts, and the constant presentation of freewill offerings, added to the daily sacrifice, made up the essentials of ritual; all being, like the arrangements in the Book of Leviticus, fixed before the Temple was built, and afterwards observed.

Verse 5. - The continual burnt offering. This is beyond a doubt the daily morning and evening sacrifice, called "the continual burnt offering" in Exodus 29:42 and Numbers 28:3-6. The clause is not modified by the succeeding words, which are additional, not exegetical, and which should not be translated, as in the A. V., both of the new moons, but, "and those of the new moons." The returned exiles kept henceforth regularly both the daily morning and evening sacrifice, and also that appointed for the new moons (Numbers 28:11-15), and those appointed for the other "set feasts,"such as the passover and the feast of Pentecost. And of every one that willingly offered. Nor was this all. The practice was resumed of sacrificing on the great altar at any time any free-will offerings that individual Israelites might bring (see Leviticus 1, 2, 3, etc.). Thus provision was made for all that was most essential in the ritual of religion, while the temple itself still remained unbuilt (see ver. 6). PREPARATION OF MATERIALS FOR THE REBUILDING OF THE TEMPLE (ver. 7). When the restoration of religion had pro-greased thus far, the civil and ecclesiastical rulers turned their attention to that object which had been specially mentioned in the "decree of Cyrus" (Ezra 1:2, 3), the rebuilding of the temple. And, first of all, it was necessary to collect building materials, wood and stone, which were the chief materials of the first temple, and which Cyrus had particularized in a supplementary decree (Ezra 6:4) as those to be employed in the construction of the second.
