The land rests from war So Joshua took this entire region: This phrase indicates the comprehensive nature of Joshua's conquest. It reflects the fulfillment of God's promise to give the Israelites the land of Canaan (Genesis 12:7). The term "took" implies military victory and divine assistance, as God had assured Joshua of success (Joshua 1:3-5). This conquest is a type of Christ's ultimate victory over sin and death, as Joshua's name in Hebrew, "Yehoshua," is the same as Jesus, meaning "The Lord is salvation." the hill country: all the Negev: all the land of Goshen: the western foothills: the Arabah: and the mountains of Israel and their foothills: Persons / Places / Events 1. JoshuaThe central figure in this passage, Joshua is the leader of the Israelites, succeeding Moses. He is tasked with leading the Israelites into the Promised Land and conquering it as God commanded. 2. The Hill Country This refers to the mountainous regions of Canaan, which were part of the land promised to the Israelites. It was a significant area due to its strategic and fertile nature. 3. The Negev A desert region in southern Israel, known for its arid conditions. Despite its harsh environment, it was part of the land conquered by Joshua. 4. The Land of Goshen Not to be confused with the Goshen in Egypt, this refers to a region within Canaan. It was part of the territory taken by Joshua. 5. The Arabah A desert valley running from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. It was included in the territories conquered by Joshua. Teaching Points God's Faithfulness in FulfillmentJoshua 11:16 demonstrates God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Despite the challenges, God delivered the land into the hands of the Israelites as He had promised. Leadership and Obedience Joshua's leadership is marked by obedience to God's commands. His success in taking the land is a direct result of his faithfulness and trust in God's guidance. Spiritual Conquest Just as Joshua conquered physical territories, believers are called to conquer spiritual territories in their lives, overcoming sin and growing in holiness. The Importance of Perseverance The conquest of the land was not immediate; it required perseverance and sustained effort. Similarly, believers are encouraged to persevere in their faith journey. What Does Joshua 11:16 Mean So Joshua took this entire region• The verse opens with a sweeping statement of victory. The emphasis is on completeness: nothing God promised remained unconquered (cf. Joshua 21:43-45; Deuteronomy 7:22-24). • Joshua’s success highlights God’s faithfulness and the obedience of Israel’s leader. Earlier, God had assured, “I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5). The fulfillment here underscores that assurance. • This “entire region” language also anticipates Israel’s coming rest in the land (Joshua 23:1), pointing forward to the ultimate rest offered in Christ (Hebrews 4:8-10). The hill country • This elevated terrain stretches through central Canaan, later known as the territory of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Judah (Joshua 20:7; Luke 1:39). • Conquering the hill country meant seizing strategic strongholds such as Hebron (Joshua 10:36-37) and Debir (Joshua 10:38-39). • God had earlier promised patriarchs that their descendants would possess these hills (Genesis 12:7; 15:18-21). Joshua’s capture manifests that ancient covenant. All the Negev • The Negev is the arid southland between Beersheba and the Sinai (Genesis 20:1; Numbers 13:17). Securing it gave Israel control of key desert routes to Egypt. • Victories at Hormah and Arad (Numbers 21:1-3; Joshua 12:14) occurred here, showing God turning past wilderness defeats into triumphs. • Caleb’s inheritance at Hebron extended into the Negev (Joshua 15:19). Taking the Negev opened the way for Judah’s later settlement (Judges 1:9-15). All the land of Goshen • This is not Egypt’s Goshen but a district in southern Canaan near Debir (Joshua 10:41; 11:16). • Its inclusion signals that every pocket of resistance, even remote, was subdued. • By naming it, the text reminds readers that God does not overlook small regions or minor battles; He completes what He begins (Philippians 1:6). The western foothills • Also called the Shephelah, these rolling hills lie between the coastal plain and the central highlands (1 Samuel 17:1-3). • Control here protected Israel from Philistine incursions and secured fertile agricultural land (2 Chronicles 26:10). • Towns like Libnah, Lachish, and Eglon fell in Joshua 10:29-35, illustrating how God gave Israel victory “from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza” (Joshua 10:41). The Arabah • The Arabah is the rift valley running from the Sea of Galilee past the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba (Deuteronomy 1:1; 2 Kings 14:25). • Dominating this corridor meant command over north-south trade routes and natural defenses. • Joshua’s earlier battle of Jericho and the crossing of the Jordan occurred on this plain (Joshua 3–6), showing continuity: where God opened the land, He now secures it. The mountains of Israel and their foothills • This phrase gathers the whole conquest into one panoramic picture—from Galilee’s heights to Judah’s slopes (Joshua 15:48-60). • It underscores that Joshua’s victories were not isolated skirmishes but a unified campaign fulfilling “every place on which the sole of your foot treads” (Joshua 1:3). • Later prophets reference these mountains when calling Israel to faithfulness in the land God won for them (Ezekiel 36:8-12). summary Joshua 11:16 declares God’s faithfulness through Joshua’s total conquest. Each named region—hill country, Negev, Goshen, western foothills, Arabah, mountains—recounts a specific aspect of God’s promise now realized. The verse assures believers that when God pledges territory, victory, or blessing, He delivers in full, down to every hill, valley, and plain. Verse 16. - All that land. Rather, "all this land ;" the land, that is, which has been spoken of in all the previous narrative. It must not be pressed to mean the utter destruction of all the Canaanites, and the undisturbed possession of the country. The hills. The mountain country of Judah, in the south. The same word is translated "mountain" immediately afterwards, to the confusion of the sense, which contrasts the mountains of Israel with the mountains of Judah (see ver. 21). This would seem at first sight to lead to the conclusion that the Book of Joshua was composed after the jealousy between Judah and the rest of Israel had sprung up in the time of David (see 2 Samuel 19:41-48). But Dr. Edersheim has suggested another explanation. Judah, he says (see Joshua 14:6; Joshua 15:1), entered upon their inheritance, while the other tribes were still in Gilgal. In the same way Mount Ephraim is so called because it was given to that tribe, and occupied by them shortly after. While as the remaining seven tribes remained without their inheritance (Reuben and Gad as well as Manasseh and Ephraim being now provided for), the rest of the mountains were known as the mountains of Israel. This explanation is ingenious, but hardly satisfactory. Ephraim (see Judges 8:1, 2; Judges 12:1) early acquired a preponderance over the other tribes. We should therefore expect a threefold division of the mountain district, the mountains of Judah, of Joseph, and of Israel, especially as Ephraim was the next after Judah to enter upon its inheritance. The internal evidence seems to prove that the Book of Joshua was written by one of the tribe of Judah, or by a Levite residing within the borders of that tribe. Perhaps this affords the best explanation, but is quite possible that the whole mountain district of Palestine is here meant. The south. The Negeb, or dry country (see Joshua 10:40). The valley. The Shephelah, or lowlands (see note on Joshua 9:1). This must have extended from Gaza northward to Joppa, while the Shephelah of Israel mentioned immediately below must be the lowland tract from Joppa to Mount Carmel. The plain. The Arabah (see note on Joshua 3:16). And the valley of the same. Rather, his (i.e., Israel's) lowland.Parallel Commentaries ...
